The Daily Prophet

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is this?

The Daily Prophet is the backbone of HPANA. It is our exclusive news-gathering engine that finds all the latest updates from the best fan and official Harry Potter sources on the Internet, automatically. Recently revamped, it's even more powerful than before, and can detect news from some sources within five minutes of publication.

How does it work?

Automated scripts launch on a scheduled basis throughout the day, checking for updates on some of our favorite Harry Potter sites. The scripts are time-tested (the result of over a year's work), and can read HTML, XML and text. They parse out the headlines, dates and summaries of the latest news and archive them in a database for later publication on HPANA.

How is the news organized?

Sources are displayed somewhat at random. We do not favor any one source over another.

How can I use The Daily Prophet?

Just come and visit this page!

Now you can be your own reporter, finding the latest updates on your own, without waiting for us to post them anymore. All we ask is that you acknowledge HPANA as the provider of this service, as well as give credit to the hardworking sites from which all this content comes.

Why are you making this public?

Far be it from us to decide what's news and what isn't.

When HPANA started in October 2002, the idea was to create a service that would simply alert people (then, just the webmaster) when a few Harry Potter sites were updated. This saved time surfing around looking for the latest news, since it all came to one place automatically. What once was the Harry Potter Automatic News Aggregator, however, became HPANA in its current form. We added more and more sources, and a lot of time and space was wasted on duplicate stories. (One site would post something, and all the others would post the same thing later.) It got to be overwhelming, and we decided to move to a moderated format. While that allowed us more professionalism and accountability, it completely left behind HPANA's original intent.

The Daily Prophet once again offers an unfiltered view of the latest updates from around the Web.

I run a Harry Potter site. Can I come here to find news to post?

Absolutely. We understand this may become a source of information for webmasters of other sites. What we want you to understand is a lot of hard work went into creating this system, and it hurts when people take things like that for granted. If you use The Daily Prophet as a major source for posting news on your site, we encourage you to inform your readers. You should almost always include the source of news when you post on your site. It's common courtesy and one of the fundamental basics on which HPANA was built.
