This is Radix Lecti's thread without all of the comments, post in his thread to make additional comments to be added to this thread. Just wanted things to be neat for the people reading this.

Hi everybody! The official JKR Website thread is becoming ridiculously long. I've noticed that many of the posts concern basic questions about the site, such as "How many secret items are there?", or "When will the door open?". So, I've decided to create this basic FAQ's Thread where newbies can come and find out that sort of information and help clear up the problem with redundant posts. If anybody thinks that I should add new questions, or if I've missed something that's being asked often, please let me know and I'll add it to the list. Please note that this post will obviously include spoilers, so if you want to discover the secrets of JKR's website on your own, stop reading now.

1. How many secret items (or easter eggs) are there?
There are currently fourteen known items.

2. How do I find the secret items?
--On the cell phone on the front page, type in the numbers 6-2-4-4-2.

--Click on the paperclamp (beside the Rumours paper; it should say Fan Sites), once in the trophy room you should see two medals and two empty boxes on the shelf, place a medal in each of these boxes.

--Click on the glasses (it should say Links), once in the library, locate the book with a question mark on it. Click on this book and drag it over to the left. This should reveal a key. Drag the key over to the locked box on your right.

--The Scavenger Hunt #1 - You must find four items on four different pages and click on them in order to get the last easter egg. The items you must click on: The potion flask on the Links page, the leaves on the Extras page, the feather on the fansites page, the spider on the main page. Once you have clicked on all of these items, you will receive the easter egg.

--Scavenger Hunt #2 — You must find three items. On the Rubbish page, click on the pen on the left-hand side. If all goes well, you should break the pen in half (satisfying isn’t it?) and your new potions ingredients will be revealed. The egg shells can be found in the upper right corner of the rubbish page. The “scrubbing bubbles” (or blue rocks) can be found on the fan site page. You know that extra medals box on the top shelf? Click and drag that box over to reveal them. The blades of grass (or toothpicks, or whatever they are…) are on the bulletin board on the Extras page. Look for them below the blank sheet of paper.

--On the main page, you will see a marble beside the cup of pens. You must wait for Peeves to make an appearance on the page. When he does, the marble will begin to glow. Click on it immediately to receive the sixth item.

--Another item can be found on the cell phone. You must type in the numbers: 7-3-3-8-3-7. Hats off to the person who figured this out. They obviously posses an otherworldly command of mathematics, which I, as a mere mortal shall never have.

--Circle the tea cup in the Rubbish Bin 3 times clokwise and a circle will appear.(You need to see a circle in the cup before you go onto the next page) Then go to the extra stuff page and click on the circle card on the bottom of the bulletin board.

--Figure out the riddle in the Rubbish Bin. Or if you want the easy way, just do click on the ring box 5 times in the Fan sites room.

--Use the tiles in the Rubbish Bin and the book of ancient ruins in the links page to figure out the new phone number (for those who don't want to figure it out themselves. it is 31071965, which someone figured out earlier on this page is JK Rowlings B-day)

--Wait on the Links page for Peeves to come through & get a picture of the lightening bolt. Then go to the Exra Stuff page, click on the pen & draw the lightening bot on the vanishing paper. This may take some practice!

--Listen to the radio on the extra stuff page to get the number of drops from each potion vials in the room of requiremnt page then go right to that room and put in the correct number of drops 6 red 3 green - need to lift the vials high on top of the plant, and the bottles will eventually tip. You need to listen to the radio first then go to the other port key to get it to work.

--Scavenger Hunt #3- A corner of the wallpaper by the light switch in the RoR can be peeled back to reveal the pieces to collect. You have to collect an egg from the main page after Peeves knocks over the pens (right beside the cup). The go to the Fan Sites page, wait for the fly to land on the trophy and click on it (it's leg is the swiggly line). You will receive an early handwritten draft.

--Go to the Rubbish bin and hold your cursor on the Sneakoscope (thing that spins). It will move away to reveal a ?. Then go to the Extra Stuff screen and draw a ? on the pad that you once drew a lightning bolt on. You will receive a list of teachers and subjects for Harry's third year.

3. I can't find the spider you just mentioned! Why did you lie to me Radix Lecti?!!
I promise you that the spider is found on the main page. If you don't see it, then you probably already clicked on it without realizing. The best way to test this theory is to go ahead and collect the other items, if you receive the easter egg, then I speak the truth and you've already caught the spider.

4. What is this mysterious door everyone speaks of?
The "door" can be found by clicking on the
eraser on the main page. After clicking on it, you will be transported to a room with a door. Now, you too can join in the fascinating past time that many here at HPANA (including myself) indulge in on a daily basis. Namely: Door watching! Not to mention its off-shoots: Door cursing, Door obsessing, and Door theorizing.
The bottom line on the "Door": If the "Do Not Disturb" sign is up, no amount of

8. Technical issues--a.k.a.--"Hey, why won't my computer let enjoy me J.K. Rowling's site?!"
Various members have reported problems accessing the site from time to time. These problems can include screen-freeze when trying to access certain rooms, or still having the "Do Not Disturb" sign when others report that it's been taken down. Don't panic! Your computer is not conspiring against you.

--First, try clearing your Internet Temporary Files (also called cache on other operating systems).

--If this doesn't work, try accessing the site from another URL address: http://www.jkrowling.co.uk
http://www.jkrowling.com

--WizKid pointed out that some people may have pop-up blocker software installed on their computer. The layout of JKR's site will trigger the software and keep you from accessing the main page. The solution is to disable the pop-up blocker when browsing the site.

--Another option pointed out by Khat is to go to www.jkrowling.com/en. Apparently this version of her site is configured in such a way that the pop-up blocker is not triggered.

--Finally, I have noticed that the site will tend to act a little funny when there are a large number of visitors trying to access a given page (for example, my computer kept freezing when I tried to check out the FAQ's Poll the last time she updated. You might just try waiting a little while. The problem could clear itself up.
**Thanks to Serge, WizKid, and Khat for this question and solution!**

9. "My Computer is channeling JKR from beyond the...er, wait a minute..."
On the main page, you may notice that the cell phone will ring periodically. If you answer it, you will hear a woman's voice saying: "Hello? Hello? Is anyone there?". As yet, there doesn't seem to be any reason for this, beyond "coolness" factor.

10. My moth/butterfly has turned into a butterfly/moth.
If it is during the daylight hours, a butterfly will flit across the main page. Once the sun goes down, it turns into a moth. I like the nightlife, I want to boogie... Sorry, I'm okay.

11. Peeves woz ere, and ere, and ere...
Peeves will make an appearance in various rooms around the site if left idle long enough. Though harmless, he does tend to knock things over, scatter papers, and occasionally, reveals a clue (think bulletin board). I, for one, am pleased to see our resident poltergeist since he was so unfairly left out of the movie adaptation

12. The radio—a.k.a.—“I never pegged JKR as a “muzak” listener.”
In the Extras room you will find a radio that turns itself on. Like the dog barking (will someone please take that dog in?!!), the radio is there to add mood and sound effects. No more, No less.

13. What’s this rubbish?
As many have noticed, JKR has added a new section to her website. Dubbed the Rubbish Bin, it gives fans a chance to hear the truth about the many rumors floating around the nether regions of news reporting. I’m personally waiting to see her debunk the rumor of water skiing budgerigars. I mean come on! Their feet are tiny!! I can’t even get mine to jump on my finger! Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, the rubbish bin can be found by clicking the gum wrapper immediately to the right of the welcome note on the main page.

14. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s...a spinning toy?
Located in the upper left corner of the rubbish bin is a contraption that looks like a cross between a compass and Dr. Evil’s time machine. When you move your cursor over this device, a shrill whistling erupts as it spins maniacally. Some have speculated that it’s a sneakoscope, others contend that it fell to earth in a fiery ball, presumably from outer space. The truth? We may never know. As yet, the device doesn’t seem to hold any secrets, but we’ll be watching it...oh yes, we will.

15. Image capture—or—“I know there’s a clue there somewhere!”
The sheer intricacy of JKR’s site demands closer scrutiny on occasion. At these times we must turn to image capturing, so that we may zoom in, sharpen, and filter every inch of those papers to our heart’s content. According to Serge (who I will place my complete faith in—I’m more clueless than a dementor at a barn raising when it comes to these sorts of things), you can capture an image of the screen by pressing the button on your keypad that says: “Print Screen”. After pressing this key, open an imaging program such as paint or photoshop and click on the “Edit” menu and select “paste”. To find the actual flash files, you must go to your “internet temporary files” immediately after visiting the site, and find the appropriate documents (they will have “.swf “ after them). Once you find the images, you must use a Flash decompiler in order to extract and view the images.
Thanks to Serge and ScretWitch for this question and answer.

16. Are all your eggs in one basket?
Several people have asked which pages should be in your scrapbook. As of right now, you should have:
Ancient Drawings: pg 1, 2, 3, 4
First typed manuscript of Philosopher’s Stone
Very early page of Philosopher’s Stone
Doodlings: pg 2
Idle jottings pg 1
Revision of OotP
Original synopsis of PS
Very early draft of PS pg 1, 2
Early draft transcript
Early draft workings

Lots of people have noticed that JKR has only released the second page of doodlings. This has led to many conspiracy theories involving undiscovered easter eggs, government suppression of the truth, and shifty men in bowler hats carrying violin cases. Okay, I admit that I made those last two up. But seriously, according to those who have looked at the website from a technical perspective, there are only seven easter eggs to be found. However, they also say that there are spots in the “code” of the site that would allow more eggs to be added later. In other words, JKR is letting us know that there will be at least one more page of doodlings to come sometime in the future.

Hi Guys! I'm so glad that you find this topic useful and urge you to keep checking back for periodic updates, but please try to keep from posting on this topic. It should be considered a "Read Only" topic. If you have anything you think should be added to this list, I would suggest bringing it up in the general Discussion of JK Rowling.com topic, since I try to check that pretty regularly. Thanks again!

WonderWoman, first, to be fair, Andy Lestrange didn't write that, I did. Yes, I am aware that it spells PEEVES, but I was adding a bit of levity in my commentary, in addition to confessing my woefully inadequate mathematics and codebreaking skills. Finally, as said before, I am very happy that people find this thread helpful, but please try to keep from posting on this topic. I swear I'm not being mean, arbitrary, or Filch-like by saying this, but the problem is, the more people post, the more cluttered the thread becomes. It makes it harder for me to keep the FAQ's in an easily readable format for people checking it out for quick answers. If there are any J.K. Rowling.com issues that pop up, try to address it in the general discussion page http://www.hpana.com/forums/topic_view.cfm?tid=2344,
and I'll add it to the FAQ's list if needed. Thanks again, Radix Lecti (Arithmancy Underachiever)

The door has been opened once again...but for how long? Here's the answer if you want the easy way to figure it out (I know I do) Thanks to the HPANA for posting it!
*SPOILER to follow*

1. Click on the hairpiece on Rowling's desk
2. The 'Do Not Disturb' sign is gone - Wait a few minutes
3. After a while, Peeves will appear and will knock over a flower vase and several keys will appear
4. Pick up each one of the keys and insert them into the keyhole on the door until one fits
5. The door will open and you will see Rowling's desk
6. Open the drawer in the table, take the magnifying glass, and with it, look at the folder on the left side of the table.
A riddle appears:

One by one we come to life
The side-by-side we wait
While our company swells in numbers
(Some come early, some come late)
And some of us may bore you
And some of us enthral
But you cannot choose between us
You must take us one and all
We'll be bound together tightly
For we're naught if we break free
If you'd like some clues about is
Simply answer: WHO ARE WE?"

The answer is CHAPTERS. You then will go to Jo's desk, open the drawer, lift the magnifying glass, scroll over the folder and lift the pages that are sticking out of the top. Your reward: Three chapters titles from book 6!

It's okay Angel2008, I've pretty much given up on the no posting thing. :) You must wait for Peeves to appear on the main page. To make this happen faster don't try to catch the moth-it will only reset the timer. Once Peeves shows up, you should hear a woosh of wind and the cup of pencils will tip over. Around this same time, the marble will begin to glow. You must immediately click on the marble while it's glowing in order to get the easter egg. Good luck!

I know we can't catch the moth, but are we able to catch the Doxy? I keep trying, but the little bugger is too fast for me... and we can't cast a spell like Hermione did...

Hi skater. No, like the moth, the doxy is not meant to be caught. Which, might I say is very unfortunate, I could really use a skiving snackbox for upcoming exams.

Sorry Radix lecti for posting here, but if anyone wants to do the easter eggs all over again, look for the file named jkrowling.sol. Delete that file or move it to another folder. That file is the flash cookie. It's location varies depending on the Windows version you are using, at least I am sure for WinXP and Win98. And I have no idea on other OSes. Use the search feature of Windows to look for the file. Once the file is deleted or moved, all the easter eggs you had before will now be all gone.

If you want to backup the file, use Windows search and make a copy on another folder. Take note of the location of the folder where you got the file from. When something goes wrong (like the easter eggs you collected suddenly disappear) copy that file back to the original folder. Just make sure that when a new easter egg comes out that you will make a newer backup copy.

john_potter, the file is not in your browser's cache (temporary internet files for Internet Explorer). It is located in Document and Settings-Application Data and in the Profile folder for Win98.

I forgot to mention that you should set your view option in Windows Explorer to view all files. The Windows search will not look inside hidden folders.

Open Windows Explorer click on Tools (might be in View for Win XP), select Folder Options and click on the View tab. You should put a check on view all files. Then do the search again.

Dana Scully, go to http://www.halfbloodprince.info/ and look for the headline that says "Excerpt from Half-Blood Prince Revealed".

Bashful_cherrylips, the door doesn't open on a set schedule. So, your best bet is to check on it every so often, or just keep an eye on these message boards-I promise that they will be all a-twitter if the door opens. However, that being said, there is a great deal of speculation that the door will open on Christmas. The last time it opened was on Halloween and it follows that the next significant holiday mentioned in the books is Christmas.
