So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.
First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).
One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.
Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?
UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!
Q: What will happen to the content here?
A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).
Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!
A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

As a parent I was a bit disappointed in Harry this time. He was so angry! I can't wait for my daughter to finish it so that I can see what her take on the teenage Harry Potter is.

Sam 2 Sar: From book 3...
"Here - I brought this from the Shrieking Shack last night," he (Lupin) said, handing Harry back the Invisibility Cloak. "And..." He hesitated, then held out the Marauder's Map too. "I am no longer your teacher, so I don't feel guilty about giving you back this as well. It's no use to me, and I daresay you, Ron, and Hermione will find uses for it."
Harry took the map and grinned.

My favorite new character in bbok 5 was Krutcher. I'll love being able to see him on screen. They ought to hire me to design him, I have such a great image of how he walks, and his facial expressions!

I will have to admit that I was wrong in my final analysis of which character would die. I thought it would be Snape, given the clue in Book 4 that he was going to go back into the "spy business," and the spoiler prior to the release of the book that there was a going to be a DADA teacher who was going to make Snape look like a sweetheart.

Oooh - I just remembered something because of what Liz said in the comments of this story.
I'll have to find exactly where in the book it is, but I found it extremely amusing when Hermione asked Ron for his opinion about Harry going to rescue Sirius, and Harry thought to himself how similar it was to Mrs. Weasley asking Arthur (i.e. a married couple). *goosebumps* Mwahaha... either JK is really toying with us, or she really is setting up Ron and Hermione.
Did you read the BBC interview transcript? About how JK has said essentially the entire plot rests upon a relationship (and I don't think she meant the link between Harry and Voldie)?

I really loved the book, but it upset me that Harry didn't think about Sirius' present before he went to Umbrige's fireplace to contact him. Hermione at least is usually on top of that stuff. I also thought that Harry's outbursts throughout the book were a litle uncharacteristic, but under the circumstances I thought it was forgivable.

My thoughts - I loved the book but have some nagging questions. But first my comments on the book - it was great.
I did not see Sirius' death & in all honesty I didn't like it, it was too quick. I cried when Dumbledore told Harry why he didn't pick him as prefect (lack of sleep on my part), I also don't believe that he told Harry everything, I'm intrigued with Petunia's role in all this & want to learn more. I loved Neville but where was Trevor - didn't JKR say that we would learn more about him? There was not enough of Moody & Lupin, didn't like Tonks or the new DADA prof. I actually loved Snape in this book & I'm not a big fan of his. I also loved the twins hope we seem over of them in the additional books.
Now for questions - what was the veil about, I know in mythology its used as a divider b/w heavan & hell but I know of other theories (won't go there right now). I'm not sure Sirius is really dead (does that make any sense), the prophecy is bugging me with the reference of only one can live. Where did Dumbledore go when he left Hogwarts, why didn't anyone other than Harry seem to mourne Sirius' death.
O.K., that's enough for now, have to get back to work & start rereading the book.

I think JKR outdid herself but I dont know if everybody will agree because... well, annoying kids wont get it.... oops, I'm getting tense... better go read :P

Who could have doubted that Percy would follow the power? He's been a power monger from the beginning. As disappointed as I was for the Weasleys, you had to expect heartache from that git. I can't wait to see if he wakes up in the next book, or continues down a path that doesn't include anyone who truely cares for him. He kind of reminds me of Mr. Malfoy. And I can see him ending up on the Dark Side if he feels he can achieve more power there.

MAJOR MISTAKE IN BOOK 5!!!!
I dont know if anyone else noticed it, and i'm hoping upon hope that i've missed something somewhere and maybe you people can help me out!
At the end of the book when Harry shakes off Proffesor Umbridge in the forest doesn't she take Harry and Hermiones wands?? Hermione says they can't do anything without wands, yet as they leap on those wierd horses and arive at the ministry, Harry and Hermione are magically clutching their wands even though i read no where how they got them back!!! It's a tremendous oversight, unless i'm wrong. What can you people tell me?????

Ok guys... what about the Crucio curse Harry uses? I mean... an unforgivable... what if he'd been seen... I think this in itself forecasts bad things to come. I was seriously worried about Neville getting killed off... HA. I'm so bad at figuring that woman out. But I LOVE Fred and George in this book. And what about Weasley is our King? Will that come back later? MY favourite new character has to be Tonks... she's just the coolest! Wotcher, Harry! And I ABHORed that awful awful woman... (so much I can't think of her name, how awful is THAT. She's the DADA teacher... the awful one ;-) ) Anyways, Happy reading!

The Obsesser says:
ok, i have way too may thoughts, so here goes...
Harry--he turned so angry so quickly; i'm not blaming him or anything, but it was a quick change.
Ron--i hated that he was playing Quidditch and Harry couldn't, especially when they won the cup...
Umbridge--ooh, i was grinding my teeth every time one of those stupid decrees came out...
Hagrid--there wasn't enough of him this time...
Dumbledore--how would him telling Harry about the prophecy 5 years earlier help--didn't Lucius Malfoy say something about Voldemort wondering why Harry didn't come sooner was because he didn't know about the prophecy. but if Harry knew... he wouldn't have wanted to come... unless Dumbledore had told him that the prophecy existed but didn't tell him what was in it...
Sirius--oh, jeez, it was too quick, too sudden, too shocking, I was crying... and whenever i think about it lately i get really depressed... but what was that veil Harry was convinced he was hiding behind??? oh, i'm really gonna miss him.
Cho--Harry really needs a lesson in girls feelings... he is really not paying attention... but, somehow, i'm glad he's not onto her anymore, he has enough things to think about...
Prophecy--does it really contain more than Dumbledore told Harry?
Occlumency--ooh, Snape was really hard on Harry, and his Pensive...
Fudge--will he really decide to cooperate, will he beleive that Sirius was innocent, or does that not matter, will Percy be accepted into his family???
Thestrals--if Harry saw his parents die, how come he only just saw them now, and if he saw Cedric die, how come he didn't see them at the end of last year? (I'm wondering if we'll ever get an explanation for this, or is it one of those things that wasn't thought of until she began the fifth book?)
Department of Mysteries--we learned a lot about it, and i have this feeling that the next two books are going to have even more to do with the goings-on in London...
yea, i know that was long... and that i love trailing off... but get ready for more to come, cos i'm not finished yet... just lost my train of thought...

There are so many unanswered questions remaining at the end of Book 5. The prophecy, while clear on its surface, appears not to be clear at all upon deeper reflection. The part which indicates that neither can live while the other lives perplexes me somewhat, as both Harry and Voldemort are currently living.
Luna Lovegood -- is she possibly related to Remus Lupin? ("Loony, loopy Lupin" from PA + "Loony Lovegood" from OP).
Ginny Weasley -- she appears to be wiser than her years, but why and how? Has she seen something "more" that JKR isn't telling us, and what could it have been?
Albus Dumbledore -- WHY is he the only wizard Voldemort ever feared, and what is he referring to when he says that "there are some things much worse than death"?
Just a few thoughts. I think the book is absolutely marvelous!

I agree with sam 2 sar when did he get the map back. and the moderator who said he had it back from lupin in book 3. But in book 4 the not so real Mad Eye Moody had the map. how did Harry get it back off him, after his sole was sucked out. it did not mention it in the book. and Dumbledore knew about it. So would he have let Harry have the map back.

I absolutely loved this book soooo much. I had to cover up pages so I wouldn't read ahead!!
As a person who is not far away from Harry and friends' ages, I feel some of those same emotions, and know that they are justified in most respects. I think Harry had a right to be angry throughout some of this book, but, he also should have asked for help in some instances, but that is, of course, a part of growing up!
I am still crying over Sirius, and some of Harry's more emotional scenes, like when he was yelling at Ron and Hermione, and when he was in Dumbledore's office. The worst part, the part where I went through almost an entire box of Kleenex, was at the end, where Harry was mourning by the lake, and when Lupin was described as having every word that he spoke cause him pain. Such powerful stuff!!
Overall, I loved this book, and would put it first on my list from the series. The only part I did not like is that I now have so many questions that are not answered, and I just can't wait until Book 6!!

I can't wait for the next book I'm glad she has already started it. I hope she has more than 7 books and tells what their lives are like after Hogwarts.

to littlewonder17 when harry and Hermione left the forest ron handed Harry his wand and Ginny handed Hermione her wand. I was wondering about that so I read that part again.

I thought his book was ABSOLUTLEY FANTASTIIC. I have read some other peoples on different websites since HPANA was down and they were complaining it was to dark and he was too angry. I feel that the book went in the completley right direction the fans on the other sites expected it to go back to how it was in the first 3 books, but that just could not happen and would have been ridiculous and made HP seem like a joke. Now on to the book the new characters were brillant i never expected Sirius to die that took me completley by surprise i cried i got depressed. I love Neville and Ginny in this book they have got so much more confident and grown up they were so cool. That Umbrodge woman was foul and so was Kreacher. I loved Dumble dore when he was in his office and said that he created DA that made me laugh and when he duelled with Voldermalt. Fred and Georges departure that was so excellent. I can't wait for the 6th book. This is my favourite book go JK :)

I think that Snape may turn out to be a much better person than he has been portrayed, although at this point I still doubt that he will ever get over his hatred for James Potter to the point where he can be civil to Harry

I loved James and Sirius even when they were 15. Luna so cool she likes Ron. Good to see Lockhart. I loved the way the teachers and students united over Umbridge. It had me hooked from begining until end.
