Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22677)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

Flitterbloom says:

Godric Gryffindor
Godric Gryffindor was a pureblood wizard born in June, more or less a thousand years ago. He and his family lived in Africa for some time, away from the witch-hating English Muggles of the time. It was on the remote plain that Godric discovered the wonder of African wildlife. He especially enjoyed watching the lion prides on the prowl. Godric was adventurous, and sometimes mischievious, so it was not uncommon for him to sneak into the wilderness. Yet he was so noble that his parents could hardly get mad at him. Godric was taught wizardry by his would-be-profesor father, who often went on about how there should be a proper wizards' school for the children. Godric was fond of his father, who tried to be strict, but often ended up skipping lessons or cracking jokes with adventurous Godric. When Godric turned eighteen, he returned to England on his own. He went to live in Hogsmeade, which he'd heard was near an enchanted forest. It interested Godric to see if this was mere Muggle lore or if he might find other wizards nearby. He met young raven-haired Salazar Slytherin in a tavern, and they became friends. This was because Godric first found Salazar to have the same adventurous spirit as he did, though later he discovered it to be a willingness to do anything for himself. Nevertheless, Godric shared his dream of creating a great wizard's school with Salazar, who readily agreed this was a grand idea. By this time, they were both at least thirty and had shared a lasting friendship as they became famous wizards with great powers. Salazar got in touch with Helga Hufflepuff, another great wizard, and she came to help create Hogwarts. Later, Godric met young Rowena Ravenclaw, who shared the wisdom beyond her years with the other Hogwarts teachers. Godric began to grow away from Salazar as he began to make more demands from the school. Salazar became angrier and angrier with Hogwarts, Godric, and Muggle-born wizards until he finally left the school. He was no longer Godric's friend, he had become an enemy. But proud Godric kept his head high through it, and continued to be noble, brave, and daring. Today, he is perhaps the most respected of the Hogwarts four. Gryffindors have always been brave and noble, and the lion (perhaps from the lions Godric saw on the plains) remains house symbol.Godric Gryffindor's wand is now in Gringott's, locked safely away and wonderfully preserved.

Flitterbloom says:

Salazar Slytherin
Salazar Slytherin was born Feburary 5th over a thousand years ago. He was a kind boy, dependent of his mother in his early years. But times became harsh for wizards and his mother was sought out by Muggles who wished her harm. Sezera Slytherin thought it best to leave her young son with a Muggle family. From there, Sezera was killed by the Muggles that Salazar soon learned to hate. He fled the town in search of education as a wizard. He found it in Hogsmeade, where he was able to work in bakery for education from Kuhrin Lesbith. She taught him everything she knew and tryed to be helpful, but Salazar thought she was bossy acting like teacher, only three years older than him. Yet they slowly became friends and Salazar accepted the fact that Kuhrin was only helping him. Salazar began to discover new spells and potions over the next few years, and gained fame from it. Salazar became a cunning wizard who stayed rooted to his opinions. He still believed Muggles deserved to be hated, and was often harsh to them. Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor met by chance at a popular resturant and they became friends. They wanted to create a wizard's school, Hogwarts, and invited Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw to help. Salazar had always known he was Parselmouth, and made the snake his house symbol almost immediately. Salazar married Kuhrin during the making of Hogwarts, and they had a son named Surzian. When Surzian was approximately two years old, his father had just about destroyed the castle in his rage. He argued constantly that Muggle-born students were untrustworthy until he felt the world had turned on him. He ignored his wife, son, and friends and froze his heart with the anger and greed that was finally unleashed in the Chamber of Secrets. Then Salazar dissapeared into the night, never to be seen or heard from again. It is said that Kuhrin was last to see him, walking briskly toward the Forbidden Forest, numb to his wife's distant pleas and his son's distant cries as he walked deeper into the trees.

Flitterbloom says:

Rowena Ravenclaw
When Loberus Ravenclaw died, he left the eagle pendant to Rowena, who wore it always from then on. Rowena strived to be wise and clever like her grandfather, and became one of the greatest witches of the age. At age twenty six, Rowena lived in a remote village near present-day Liverpool where she met Phiona. Phiona was a Muggle-born witch persecuted by the villagers, suspicious of the strange things Phiona seemed to make happen. Rowena felt sorry for the nine-year old witch, and befriended her. When Phiona's house was burned by the villagers, Rowena apparated with her to the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest, hidden from Muggle eye. It was in nearby Hogsmeade that Rowena met Godric Gryffindor, it was there that she was invited to help with the making of a wizards'school, Hogwarts. And it was so. Rowena Ravenclaw joined Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin in the making of Hogwarts. Phiona became one of the first Hogwarts students and took the name Ravenclaw on for her own. Phiona inherited the eagle pendant when Rowena passed on, and it is owned today by Loberus Ravenclaw XI. Loberus XI gave the pendant to the Ravenclaw house, where it is embedded (protected by glass) in a portrait of Rowena Ravenclaw above the mantel. Wisdom continues to be Ravenclaw trait and eagle is the mascot, no doubt inspired by the famous turquoise and ivory pendant.

I contacte the ownder, and she said she got the information about the house founders from another site, but she doesn't know if it's true.. oh well, it's still an intersting read
tonks black- i like that theory too. I think Lupin might not want to tell Harry because of some problems it might cause. I believe that if the theory is true, of course we're going to find out, and Harry will find out, but for now, I think they wanted to keep that information wrapped up for Lupins (James) safety and maybe Harrys well being too.

had an strange earlier - this is jumping back to an earlier disgussion about crookshanks being an animangus. What is Hedgewick (Harry's owl) was an animangus? Harry didn't buy Hedgwick, he was a gift from Hagrid. What if DD had Hagrid give the owl to Harry as gaurdian?
If I remember a conversation between Harry & Ron from CoS, that owls are very expensive and I've never gotten the impression that Hagrid has any, so how could he afford to give Harry such a wonderful bird?
I think this is pretty far fetched but kind of fun to think about.

Snitch - a note to what you posted earlier about Lily being an anigmus and that having something to do with the importance of her eyes.. Do we know any animals, or humans who have bright green eyes?? because if we do, or if we read a small passage with a reference to eyes like Lily's and Harry's perhaps that could have some importance. I think I may need to read all these books again soooo slowly

dimtick - wow.. i'm surprised no one thought of this earlier. It's definitly a possibilty. I've been thinking a lot about what we've read on anigmi. They each have some sort of "marking" on them. I wonder if we could find out if Hedwig and Crookshanks had a sort of different marking on them... I'm going to try and do that. Plus, what were Sirius' and James' markings? And.. do you just need a marking when you register so that they can distinguish you from other animals? Because Wormtail we know had a toe missing when he was a rat.. I wonder if that was his marking. Any answers to these questions??

dimtick says:

to the theory of Lupin being James - how could Lupin be James if they were both in Snapes memory. And why couldn't Harry have lived with him instead of the Dursleys, unless his mothers sacrifice only applied to her side of the family (blood relation - not marriage), which thus doesn't apply to James side of the family.

once again, here is another lovely edtion of tonks's thoughts. also sorry if these post are alittle late, but you all post alot in a little amount of time. lol.
Flitterbloom:good theory about the four founders turning into animals.maybe hufflepuff was mrs.norris(the cat of filch i think)?an good facts about reasearching helga hufflepuff.
and i agree about maybe lupin is james and isee what you mean about it for harrys well being. harry would probably stop wanting to kill voldemort as much then.

jade- maybe kakaroff ran back to voldemort cause if i remember right he was a death eater.also, maybe DD will order harry to have lessons with tonks on how to be whatever it is called where you can change your appearance.

dimtick- i never thought about hagrid not being about to afford hedwig. its a good chance he could be an animagi

since voldemort was the heir of slytherin, maybe the souls of each or the four founders lives on in the body of the person who will be most loyal and powerful. or it could be most loyal and most like what is described in the sorting hats song for each house.and sorry if this shows up really long.

Imperio says:

dimtick- I like your idea that Hedwig could be an animagus, for a couple reasons. JKR has always made a point to talk about Hedwig's markings and in OotP it is shown that she stands out among the other owls (Parvati Patil exclaimed how she always liked Hedwig) Hagrid does not have money, let alone one that is as nice as Harry's and Hedwig also seems to boast some rather humanlike characteristics like anger when Harry had neglected her.

dimtick - my theory was that perhaps james was a metamorphmagus and he didn't die that day. Lupin perhaps sacrificed himself, and James changed his appearance to Lupins afterwards.. I've listed some reasons somewhere back there as to why James/Lupin wouldn't say anything to Harry if that theory was true.
Mad-Eye thanks for reminding me of Rita being unregistered.

Haha Jade.. thanks for the compliment. I was actually going to bring up Hermione's Patronus.
