Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22355)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

tonks black- cool idea.

What do people think Lavender and Parvati will do in future (if anything) because we hear a lot about them but so far i dont think they have proven their Gryffindor qualities

Wait a minute, before you all get into the whole Hedwig is the embodied spirit of all four founders combined to protect Harry. 1. Way too big of a coincidence. 2. How on earth could they still be alive. 3. What connection do we have between the founders and HEDWIG? 4. When has Hedwig protected Harry. 5. Hedwig was injured in OotP wouldn't she be able to defend herself if she was one of the founders (they were obviously powerful wizards) Let's try to discuss some more plausible things.

Yes, Mr. Weasley. Ron, in OOTP, says "Gryffindor has less of a chance winning the Quidditch cup than Mr. Weasley has of being Minister." Gryffindor won the Quidditch cup..

Mad-Eye - That is a good point about Parvati and Lavender, they are mentioned all throughout the books. I do suspect that they might come into play more in book six and seven. Maybe even as a love interest for Harry/Ron?

I don't think that Draco can change his appearance.. unless he would become even more of a slimy git. Do you think Sirius could be a metamorphmagus? Or Draco's mother, or Bellatrix Lestrange?

Before I move on to whatever theory pops into my brain next, the Hermoine/Otter patronus seems to me to represent her (i think someone said that JK wanted that)
River otters are very intelligent and very curious. Scientists have found they have a remarkable memory.
That seems like Hermione to me.
Anyway, onto this Tonks/Black metamorphmagus theory. It's excellent. It's true metamorphmagi can't be "made" they are born (Tonks says this herself).. If it's genetic, than my next guess would be that Bellatrix Lestrange could very well be a metamorphmagus. We all have a feeling that she's going to play a larger role in the next books, especially since she's the only one that escaped, and she's a relative of Sirius.

Kadyak says:

When I presented the parallel to Rikki Tikki Tavi, I was focusing on the fact that Nagina became so much more aggressive after Nag was killed - so much more dangerous. I figure this is how Narcissa Malfoy would behave (consider her name, if nothing else). The thought about her offspring being killed by Harry is a good one. Hummm. Might just happen. The first question of course, is whether or not JKR deliberately created a parallel here.

I suspect that losing any Weasley except Percy, but especially Molly or Ron would totally unhinge Harry.

Will DD die? Not at all unlikley - unfortunately.

Who will learn magic late in life? My bet is Hagrid, followed by Petunia. It would make an interesting twist for Petunia to have a total change of heart about magic and the wizarding world, wouldn't it? However, Hagrid already has a start and it would make perfect sense for the Ministry to allow him to complete his magical education and get a new wand considering the situation they are in.

hgreenbacker - i like your Harry/Draco theory, but I think the riff ther eis to great for them to ever be friends. I think the only way they would ever willingly help each other is if they faced a mutual life or death situation. Then they would cooperate just enough to get them out of whatever mess they were in. I could see the 2 of them getting stuck in the forest and having to batlle their way back.
As far as the Hedwig theory goes, i'll have to re-read that section again, I only remember the movie version. I still don't see how Hagrid could have afforded him. Just look at the little bird Siruis gave to Ron, and he's rich (unless he blew all his money on Harry firebolt).

Draco become good. Please, he has been totally brainwashed
into this pure-blood thing. Also, he goes home to Mom
who is a snob. And let's not forget our Aunt B who is
also a death eater. If they both survive and graduate, I expect Harry and Draco will be enemies for life. Maybe,
DD will come up with a magic spell to eliminate all
negative feelings.

as far as Petunia being a squib, I tend to doubt that. She may no more than she lets on but that doesn't make her any more magical (or any more likeable for that matter). As far as Dudley getting magic - boy that would be a twist now wouldn't it, for him to be suddenly thrust into Harry's world. But if Dudley had any magic in him wouldn't he have been able to see the dementor?
