Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22355)

Source: HPANA

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

Newt Scamander says:

The reason that I highly doubt that Crookshanks could possibly be an Animagus or just have been transfigured is the Marauder's Map. In the third book, Lupin goes to the Shrieking Shack because he sees Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and the three kids go up there. However, he never mentions anything about another person, and I would assume that he'd be curious about someone he never heard of (or worse yet, did hear of) climbing through the Willow with the others but didn't find a trace of another person in the Shrieking Shack. He may have been letting his emotions fly about regaining a friend, but I doubt that would be something he'd so easily forget.

Someone, dimintek? posted further about Crookshanks. Didn't Sirius say that he was the smartest of his kind? I took that to mean Kneazle... but it COULD have been something else. I think you make a valid point.
You know, do you think it is possible that a younger Harry could have turned a peron into an animal>>> Ripper? Maybe a squib sent to watch him....?

jade - Hi, I can't ... Windows 95. :(
BUT I will work on getting a new computer this week... so take heart.
Would you post some of them here? I REALLY would love to hear them!

I like to brainstorm about possibilities based on the words written in the book... and I think you have a wonderful ideas... I also appreciate Pudifoot, tonks black, ecklectic, HGreenbacker and several others' thoughts. Where are ya'll? IT has been slow for me without your wonderful creativity.

By the way, Kadyak, I respect your thoughts, as my perspective is also that of an adult. I am a 36 year-old mother working in the technology field with a Masters and a 13 year marriage. ;) However, since this is a 'spoiler'/discussion page on the internet and not a thesis, I post it like I see it and truly appreciate the others here that do the same.

By the way, thank you Remus_lupin for posting your OWLS speculation. Do you really think he did that well? I hope so! I think Harry would do a great job at anything and if he wants to be an auror more power to him.
I would like to see him working as an Unspeakable. I do hope we get to see more of that.

Newt Scamander, if Crookshanks were an anamagi, wouldn't he show up on the map? Although, hang on, Scabbers/Wormtail -why did Harry, Fred, George, Ron, not notice him?

Yes, why is it that Lupin alone noticed that Scabbers was Wormtail? I suspect the map shows from the perspective of the one addressing it... the sign on they do 'I am so and so and I am up to no good.'

Prof. Andaxia Moonstar says:

Just finished reading about 300 more posts! Wow!

Puddifoot - good point about the skinny boy who saw the thestrals possibly being Nott. I know Nott has been mentioned several times, but we know nothing about him. Being the child of a Death Eater must be very intimidating - you either have a formidable parent or a frightening one, depending on the personality of the child. I am curious as to what death that Slytherin boy saw - he was mentioned for a reason.

Dafonearth - I have also thought it was interesting that Bowman Wright (the inventor of the Snitch) and the Potters both lived in Godric's Hollow. Perhaps Wright is descended from Godric and is one of the original settlers of the community (or was Gryffindor named for the place, and not the other way around)? I like the idea that Harry searches for the ball his ancestor created.

It would be great if Harry received an O on his Potions O.W.L. - that would really tick off Snape!

Also, I agree with Kadyak and Polyjuice13 that British vocabulary and spelling should not be changed in the American versions. It would be good for American children (and adults) to be exposed to that. Fortunately, they seem to be leaving more and more of the vocabulary intact in the later books.

I would love to hear more theories from you all without having to peruse 200-300 posts at a time. Even though I will continue to post here, please feel free to e-mail me at gul_damar@hotmail.com and let's talk!!!

Whoa! Yes, it fits! I think he could be. I wondered how someone as scuffy as JKR had described him didn't look out of place as a woman... Also, if he has been kicked out of the Hogs Head, a common disguise might not work. I love it! Thank you for sharing.

Do you think there could be other 'morph' types... like we've seen animal and physical appearance, what about speech or ability, gender, elements? I would love to see someone turn into water or mud. That would be awesome.

i have a notion of how the da club will stay well now that everyone knows voldys back he does not have to hide anymore so the dementors and his loyal followers in azkaban will go back to him, now draco and most of the other slytherins will be happy they will feel that they have the upper hand and i think that they will begin to pick on the muggles and muggle lovers i then think that da army will be there to protect them they have learnt enough spells.you will have the order against voldy and the de, then inside da versus draco and the slytherins.

Interesting parallel, I think you are right. Do you think that Draco and the Slytherins will form their own group? I wonder if any Slytherins will join DA. I agree though, DA will continue. Someone suggested that Harry might be the DADA because of it… wouldn’t that get Draco’s goat?!?

that maybe bellatrix had escaped befor the artcle came out that she had offically escaped, i mean he would not want it getting out after how hard he tried to discredit dd and harry.maybe kreacher had already left secretly to go and see her and passon info which she could then pas on to voldy, dobby did it for harry and as you can see kreacher loves bellatrix so he could have easily have done the same thing i wen tinto more detail when i was discussing it with mad eye but it woukd take for ever to repeat it tis is just the general jist of it.

jade - I think that Kreatcher definately gave Bellatrix information (and Narcissa) and I think they are the ones who told him to be ready for Harry to check on Sirius.

hermione2006 you have had some good theories too... any new ones?

I have a new theory. I think that Hermione's parents might take a greater role in upcoming books. Someone mentioned that the thougth it was possible that Muggles would join the war. I am not sure about the general population, but I could see her parents helping. One thing they could do is dental work on Vernon so he would leave Harry alone for a day!

Any ideas about Professor Sinistra?

Also, I think Hagrid will die... Do you think Grumbly-Plank would take his place? I thought not, because she is 'part time'. I would like Charlie Weasley to be in the story line more. He would be a great game keeper/Care of Magical Creatures.

hermione2006 - great idea. When I think of green, I think of life and spring time... or jealousy. Green with envy? Being sick?
I wonder if the color has something to do with Alchemical work. Colors seem to play in important role in the series. I notice red = sulpher, silver = mercury, black and white also.

this is really interests me... thanks for bringing it up.

hermione2006 - any more thoughts about the color green?
jade - what was your theory on the other teachers being in the order?

The book I mentioned before --> The Hidden Key to HP.. it has suggestions for Book 6 title and 7. They are: The Wounded unicorn and the Cenatur's Choice.

Interesting read. Kadyak, if you have not done so, you should read it.

hermione2006 - I think it helps a lot! OK, to your first post... I think that it makes sense that Avada Kedavra would be linked to the Dark side. Good find! I did not know that was THE color. Funny, I thought it would be black. :)

As to the others, money = greed (dark), and same for jealousy and maybe individual power. These seem to be the opposites for the book themes --> truth, courage, loyalty, love, nobility.

man I feel so useless to this disscussion...lol I haven't had one theory congratulated..no no don't feel sorry for me....lol I was a little late joining in on the fun and missing my chance to points stuff out..other then noticing that dd's door knocker was a griffon which probably ment he as in gryffindor..ANYWAY...About Snape being a vampire..I still stand beside this..someone said on a website that if he were a vampire he wouldn't go out in the day light...but Snape as he is being the "Potion Master" probably can whip up some vampire-ammune-to-sun-light-potion what do you all think? I am starting to get theory's popping in my head but they seem to be blank right now soo you haven't heard the last of me!....

I know this was explained probably years ago..but I just joined up to this board probably the last of june..And I think That Mr. Filch will discover magic late in life..I have nothing to back this up but I'm just making a speculation ;)

Bravo, Sirius-Ella! Two wonderful theories... I agree, Snape is a vampire... I have no idea what qualities one would have in Harry's world, but I love the potion theory. There was not one mention of vampires in Fantastic Beasts, but with Lupin and he swapping essay assignments on werewolves and vampires, I say Snape is one.
A thought, why hasn't Hermione said something about this? She probably has figured it out, just as she figured out about Lupin?

I have been thinking about Mrs. Norris too. It has been discussed that Crookshanks is anamagi... I think not, BUT I think it possible that Mrs. Norris is something other than a cat. First, the name. Mrs. to indicate a married woman. The Norris part has me a bit stumped for an idea... Maybe it IS just a name, but since I first read it, I thought it an odd name for a cat.
Second, she could be kneazle, but aren't they supposed to be licensed and very difficult animals? Filch COULD have such a license, but how has such an impatient man worked with a difficult animal to make her function so on his behalf. They seem to have a relationship much like you describe, and more. NOT like THAT, but erm... do you see my point?
