Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22355)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

i think that dumbledore should go to.. (although his death would make me cry buckets..) harry needs to learn to face up to his own destiny and dumbledore seems to stand in that way of that. he has had a lot of help from him and i think that by not having dumbledore will be truly become his 'own' person..

Socks have been a recurring image through all the books- Dobby, DD, etc... but I have absolutely no clue what they could be. Maybe a metaphor for "freedom" like Ima said- but that would be stretching it a bit, in my opinion.

ima here it is you know how you mentioned about the perseus-snape and bellatrix-medusa.
well imagine if he only pretends to kill her and gives her the draught of the living dead instead, this allows everyone to believe she is dead thus giving her the oppurtunity to kill anyone she likes e.g alice longbottom who happens to be harrys godmother and in the crossfire kills neveille see my earlier post about for my last theory about how you helped me cement my theory.if you can't find my post then its that alice regains her memory tell harry she is his godmother and then rejoins the order, she trys to save harry but neville jumps in the way to protect her. for the indepth version look on this page somewhere.
mad eye will be so mad i usually tell him these things first.

Yeah, I have to agree with DD dying theory, probably at the very end of book 7. Not only will Harry have to face being alone, but the other members of the Order will, too. DD been around a long time, wont the others be just as devastated to see him die?

I have something to add to my previous post. If Dumbledore were to die, I believe that Fawkes would take Harry's side. I think this not only because Harry has showed the most loyalty to Dumbledore than I think anyone has (proving so in the Chamber of Secrets), but it would really show Harry that he is the one and the leader, and must take it upon himself to guide the way to victory.

I at least don't think Fawkes was killed by Voldemort's curse...was he? They die all the time and...I hope not, as the Phoenix Song does well for pure-hearted folk and strikes fear in those whose hearts are tainted. (I know the book "I" wrote from cover to cover. ::Laughs::)

Well, alchemist530, if the shoe fits...

I am not sure about the sock theory, but freedom is all I can make of it. Actually, it was my mom's theory....
She is visiting us, and told my daughter some of those emabarassing stories of me as a child. She told her that my favorite teacher was Mrs. McKinney, 'because she let you take your shoes off in class.' I laughed when I remembered saying that, but then it hit me. How freeing...

AND the socks that Harry gave Dobby.

What about the ones DObby made for Harry. Does anyone else think that there may be something magical about them.. maybe protecting him a bit?

ooh- i like the magical socks theory! Dobby's protected Harry loads of times, but has Harry actually worn the socks? Hmm... Im really thinking about the freedom thing... would DD really want 'freedom' as in death (or rest), or just freedom from the threat of Voldemort?

Jade- Ive thought about that, but then if something happened to James and Lily, would Harry have gone to Sirius or Alice? Its unusual to split godparents like that, not to say that it isnt done. I really think that the Longbottoms are going to be really important in the coming books.

Newt Scamander says:

Ima Quidditch Fan - It was (fake) Mad-Eye Moody. When Harry told him that a house-elf named Dobby made them for a present for him, Moody (well, Crouch) knew that Dobby would be a perfect place to plant a clue as to how to get through the Triwizard Tournament (which worked, too; Dobby gave Harry the gillyweed).

Rita Skeeter was at the ball, but didn't catch Harry for anything. (I at least believe that the time she reported on the Hermione-Krum-Harry love triangle was from after the second task, as Hermione brushed a beetle off her head.) That must've been it. I mean, Harry was right beside her at least once, we know, but there was no mention of him (other than a small one in Hagrid's big article.)

Newt Scamander

Newt Scamander says:

alchemist530 - Well, this is getting quite farfetched, but I came up with something with Dobby's socks. One has broomsticks on it, the other has Snitches. Flying on a broomstick is Harry's escape from everything. Whenever he gets on one for the first time each year, he feels fresh and away from all his problems. The Snitch is very evasive and hard to spot, catch, et cetera.

So, in case you didn't get the point of that, they pmight rotect Harry from those who trouble him, and things that trouble him. Well, something like that.

Anyway, I've gotta leave for now. (Taking the dog out to a local park to meet up with some of his pals.) When I get back, this had better reached...oh, at least...2750 posts. And they'd all better be full on intelligent theories, ideas, and followups. Ta!

I'm not sure waht to think about Sinistra... clearly the name stands for something. Just curious if anyone had any ideas about her... or the Bloody baron for that fact.

About the socks Tatipotter it is just a thought I had that maybe Dobby added some magic to the socks he made him since Mad Eye (jr) specifically mentions them at the ball. I like Newts theory, and it goes along with alchemist530's points about keeping his troubles at bay.

Alchemist 530 says:

Im going to have to look through the books again for any mention of Sinistra... it'll give me something to do. Bloody baron- strikes me as odd that if he's so bloody, why was he afraid of death, thus becoming a ghost? Maybe killing didnt bother him, but his own mortality did. And he's the slytherin ghost, so that might have something to do with it, too.
