Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22355)

JUNE 23, 2003 at 2:37 PM

Source: HPANA

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

Im going to have to look through the books again for any mention of Sinistra... it'll give me something to do. Bloody baron- strikes me as odd that if he's so bloody, why was he afraid of death, thus becoming a ghost? Maybe killing didnt bother him, but his own mortality did. And he's the slytherin ghost, so that might have something to do with it, too.

WOW, I love the socks theory...I don't know why but I feel that if DD died..I would be terrible misrable but I know that Harry is the making of a GREATER wizard and a GREATER Leader...the death of DD would deffinatly push Harry towards being a great leader..I could deffinatly see him as headmaster...but I know I know you think Nevill wil be a headmaster..so maybe Harry could be the dada teacher........while training to be an auror lol Idunno...your thoughts? ANd about Pro. Sinistra (sp) We haven't heard much of her other then her sitting by snape..
I was just thinking about her a couple days ago while reading book 2....she is only mentioned sitting by snape..as far as i know...maybe she will play a role in the 6-7 year...maybe they will get sinistra as a teacher for some diffrent lesson we haven't heard of yet....YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE!

ugh...ofcourse I know why I'd be terrible misrable if dd..died...what I meant is that if he died I would understand that it is the best way to push harry to be a great leader/wizard...as you can see the D.A. are starting to respect him (end of book...malfoy/crabbe/goyle/...globs of gloo) lol

Prof. Andaxia Moonstar says:

Sorry that this post touches on subjects mentioned 300 posts back . . . heehee.

Puddifoot: Good catch on the possible class systems among wizarding families. It makes sense, as we Muggles have our own class systems. It definitely fits in with the Muggle/Mudblood/Squib classes and the house-elves already established.

Newt Scamander: Very good point about Harry possibly being a descendent of Slytherin, or even Riddle. If he is descended from Riddle, than the comment in COS about Riddle being the last ancestor of Slytherin would be correct (many people believe that to be a mere typo, thinking Rowling confused ancestor with descendent).

Also, if Harry and Voldemort are "immortal" right now - only able to die by the hand of the other (as mentioned in earlier posts) - then it would have been very interesting to see if Lucius' Avada Kedavra in the COS movie had actually worked on Harry. I know that this wasn't in the book, but perhaps that add-on in the movie scene was included for a reason. We never got to see the outcome because Dobby interfered.

I think that the only things that could kill Harry are either Voldemort or something incidental. Also-- I wonder here Wormtail was in this book?

will save Harry's life..maybe wormtail ran away from Voldemort *shudder* and is in hiding and thats why we didn't hear from him...thats a little far fetched but as I have learned from you guys...far fetched is a good thing lol....

x WaddiWasi x and Sirius-Ella- this was discussed like 1500 post ago, but if you look on the coverpage there is the image of a rat sitting in grass by a tree (I know this is in the US and Deluxe Editions).
Most of us thought this meant that Wormtail was watching over 12 Grimmauld Place. He would know about it from being friends wth Sirius an most likely knew of all the spells Sirius' dad put on the place so Voldemort might have thought it was a place the Order might be.

IMA, your posts 2451-2475, Harry not having a look around the vault I KNOW, when is he going to learn to start asking questions??? His heritage, where th emoney came from, anything really.

NEWT, congratulations you're a prefect now. I expect you'll be acting acordingly and your post 2476-2500 gave me a good laugh.

The Perseus/Medusa thing is interesting isn't it? emember what Perseus needed? An invisiblity helmet! heheh now THAT reminds me of the Weasley twins invisiblity hat.

Puddifoot - I forgot all about the whole invisible helmet story. And now with these invisible hats...it could turn out to be one huge retelling of the legend of Perseus! ::Laughs:: Though I doubt it would involve the hats, as Fred and George's main addition to the plot is now is providing a laugh and we all know that Severus isn't one to laugh, it could very well involve Harry's invisibility cloak. I wonder...

The hats or the cloak... great points about the Perseus take... boy, I really think this is coming together!
I know some of the theories are out there, but I think our little brainstorming sessions are coming up with logical points.

At the very least, it is helping me to pass the time until something NEW HP comes out.... book, movie, stickers, coloring book, game, whatever...

Speaking of, Pudifoot, this is for you...
Harry's green eye's are like those of a cat. Able to see well in the dark, and according to the Sorcerer's Companion, cats are the natural enemy of the snake.

Andaxia Moonstar thanks for that comment on the hierarchy/class system. The more I think about it the more I like it myself. Of course it is England which has quite an established class system.

Newt - yeah unlikely I know but I couldn't resist.

Also, Ima Quidditch Fan - Good takes on the cat-snake shindig. I see where you're coming from.

Just remembered something else - Sinistra sounds like sinister but means 'to the left' in Italian. Gosh that is soo helpful:)

I had never heard that about finding out about spouses. That is interesting not too many would want to marry a muggle if they live the normal muggle life span and wizards live longer ... hmm maybe this is interesting with respect to the Snape/Evans/and anybody else really ... geneaology... someone could well have married twice you know:)

Ima!! Hey I like that eye-idea it fits:)

Puddifoot - Sinistra also means "accident" in Portugese. That kind of sounds...odd...I wonder if Rowling meant to use the Portugese definition, Italian definition, similar sound to "sinister," or just kind of went "Whoops!" and spilled ink on her paper in the shape of "Sinistra."

jade - I really like the theory, esp the part about Alice, but I am not exactly sure what the sleeping death thing does... Makes her look dead, but not really? Like a zombie? So she can kill by stealth?

Puddifoot - I am so convinced about the Evans geneology... I just know that Snape is Lily's first cousin. AND I so wonder if Petunia would know Snape by site... I wonder if she will get a chance to see him... wouldn't that freak Harry out?!?! Jade mentioned that she thinks Mark Evans might be a red herring. While it is possible, I really think he will be a part of the family too... I just can't place if he is Snape's cousin, nephew or son. (That would be really wild)

Jade, the living draught, you know that has never really
