Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22355)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

In the British private school system (which Hogwarts is modeled after)during school hours you must be in uniform (whats under their robes). During off school times (after hours, weekends etc.) you may wear your own clothes. Since they just had exams (in Snape's memory)they were in robes as it is official, but since school wasn't really in session for them, they could get away with having casual clothes on under their robes.

I wish to start a "Moody for Minister" campaign.
Let's face it, Fudge has proven himself VERY dangerous. When I finished Goblet of Fire, I suspected only that Fudge would be stupid for a while and would end up eating crow about the middle of the next book; how naive of me. No, Fudge's ambition not only blinds him to the truth, it allows himself to censor the truth, even from his own mind. He willfully refuses to see the truth. Furthermore,in order to secure his own position he places Umbridge at Hogwarts and gives her absolute power. Again, he silences any opposing voice, and thus blocks from his own ears any information about her abuse of power.
So the question becomes, who should replace Fudge. My vote is Alastor Moody. Is he too paranoid to be credible? I don't think so. He may not be happy if he does find 6 plots to kill him by lunchtime, but his paranoia is not unfounded (just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you), and it only leads him to be extremely cautious. Seems to me that's what the wizarding world of Harry Potter needs at this point. Any thoughts?

Several questions to answer from earlier postings. Coming of age in Muggle British world is 17 for most purposes, 21 for legal means of inheriting and considered head of house.

Newts are in 7th year, not sixth. OotP pg 711 american states "fifth and seventh years (students)milled around in the entrance hall while the other students went off to lessons.

I have a question about the prophesy that I posted on Discussion #2, I would love to have some answers to it. Do I need to post it here too?

Finally,I am wondering if it were possible that Harry is in fact related to Dumbledore, as is Snape? Would that be why Dumbledore trusts Snape, and may also further explain why Snape dislikes James Potter so much, esp. if they were related? Just a thought...

Finally, I seem to "remember" that Snape was on the Slytherin Quidditch team, but can't find that reference. Those whom I have asked off the internet say no such thing do they remember; anyone out there remember this?

I have had some problems with my computer, so forgive if these end up being overlapping topics.

Well, I honestly thought that Dumbledore or Hagrid were going to die.. and I NEVER thought that would be Sirius. He's my favourite character and I couldn't believe myself how depressed his death made me. Other than that thought, this is probably my favourite book ever. I love it. JKR definitly pulled off a great book!!!

For all those discussions on the veil causing the death, I think that is right on. In the US version of HP5 on pg 817, Dumbledore refers to the room as the "Death Chamber"...

"you will find several Death Eaters contained in the Death Chamber...."

I stand by my theory of the archway/veil as being a entry to the spiritual world from the physical world. I think we will see more from this room in 6 or 7.

hmmm, about Aberforth... the only time i remember him being mentioned was when Dubledore said he was prosecuted for praticing inappropriate charms on a goat, and when it was all over the papers, he didn't hide, but Dumbledore's not altogether sure he can read... hmmm, i hate to use this word, but it seems Moody had a good obsevation, that he was a "strange bloke".

also, i really want to know which of voldy's DEs was listening to the prophecy. and i somehow doubt that voldy has told all the death eaters what is in the first half of the prophecy. i mean, he really can't trust them, can he? i have a feeling that whoever that DE was, he/she will be pretty important. could it have been wormtail? i mean, at that time, was he working for voldy? who knows, it might have been before he was a DE, and when he became one, then he told voldy???

or, would it have been one of the more loyal servants? then they would have been certainly thrown out, but why would they be allowed in there in the first place, and couldn't they get back in, if they were so powerful? then, maybe they, too were scared of dumbldore. and then there's the fact that those were really dark times, and you just didn't know who to trust, didn't dare to make new friends and stuff like that...

someone tell me if that made any sense...

oy, and also, someone had a theory about the time-turner... i didn't catch it... but this is what i think: that sometime, Harry will have a chance, a slim chance, to go back and save his parents, or sirius, or someone else, and he has to decide to take the risk or not, and what means more to him--what he has, or what he could have, and the thing is, what he has would be totally destroyed if he went back searching for what he could have... meaning that "the consequences of our actions are so diverse, so complicated, that predicing the future is a very difficult business indeed," which means that, in trying to save someone who has died, or from dying, he could lose the things he has in the present...

by the way, does my picture thing look any good?

Siriusella: Oliver was the Keeper and Captain in books
1-3, but Angleina who is Captain in book 5 was a Chaser. In one of the books, they mention that Charlie Weasley
was the Captain and a Seeker. So to be Captain, the position does not matter as much as your coaching/management skills. Harry has shown with the
DA club, he can teach/coach others. I worry that they
will not make him Captain because to paraphrase Dumbledore
"he has too many burdens to deal with"

honestly, i still dun really get what ur saying abt the time turner thing.. its way way confusing.. is it me or is it already branching out into the sci fi realm? but thanks anyway for ur attempts at shedding some light tho it still seems very very hazy..

abt the prefectorial system:
2prefects are chosen frm each hse and its done at the 5th year.. so altogether there'll be 8 5th yr prefects every yr.. i think they remain prefects till their last years in school. then there's one head boy and girl who's chosen only when they're at the 7th yr.

abt the OWL:
im not too sure abt the grading system. i mean fred and george said that they got 3 owls each but in order to achieve an owl, whats the passing grade? just a P? or do they have to get outstanding, ie O? can someone clarify?

I-Pie : About next years quidditch team for Gryffindor, I am very interested in what will happen especially since I really didn't like the small level of it in OotP. So the team is losing Fred, George, Angelina, Alicia, and I don't know for sure what year Katie Bell is but I think that they might lose her as well. So they will need a pair of beaters (already tried some out but didn't do so well) three more chasers (Ginny will probably make the switch once Harry is allowed back into the team) and for some reason I get the feeling that one of the Creevey's will join the team. This is because JKR has put an emphasis on them for a while without really showing us why. Just a thought, anyways what does everyone else think about the upcoming quidditch team???

Muggle Wizard says:

eclektic, I don't think there has been much stated about Book 6 at all. JKR is not giving us much to go on anymore. I think we're getting to the point where most hints would probably give away a large portion of the storyline.

But we already have a lot of hints in the other books. Recall the title of the last chapter of Book 5. "The Second War Begins." Now, maybe wars are different in the Wizarding World, but when I think of war, I think of death as a consequence. Last time (during the First War Against Voldemort) we know several people died. Why should this one be any different?

Prof. Andaxia Moonstar says:

I would definitely like to see Harry made Captain of the Quidditch team next year. It wasn't made clear if Katie was a sixth- or seventh-year in this book, but if she is still around, I would be fine with her as Captain too. Most likely, Ron will stay on as Keeper and Ginny will become a Chaser. Who do you think will make it as the other Chaser? Will they keep the Beaters they have now or get replacements?

In clarification to my earlier post, I believe that Voldemort thought the weapon was the prophecy, but in actuality it will be something else in the Dept. of Mysteries. Voldemort is not perfect, and has made mistakes in the past (i.e. forgetting that phoenix tears have healing powers in The Chamber of Secrets).

Hopefully, we will learn more about Lily and James and what happened to their families. Also, in the prophecy it stated that his parents had defied Voldemort three times - any ideas on what those were about?

Lauryn -- Snape hates Harry because he looks like James. James bullied him all through school. It also doesn't help that he had a wizard's debt to James, because James saved his life, and Snape was never able to repay him.
(A little side note here: some people also believe that Snape was jealous of James either because of his Quidditch abilities or because he married Lily.)

Virginia- That's an interesting theory on the possibility of Snape, Dumbledore, and Harry all being related however I do not think this is plausible at all. I think that JKR has other things in store for the relationship between Harry and Snape and I think Dumbledore's trust will come into play during that period. But, I just can't imagine them being related.

Rumor: The book will be titled "Harry Potter and the Green Flame Torch" in which Harry will find a torch that will kill all evil and heal all good.
Rumor: Hermione is injured and in the hospital wing. Ron and Harry go one-on-one against Voldemort.

I read this rumor on some website, and I have to agree with some of it but I don't for sure about the name....she already named a book Goblet of Fire...and a FLAME? I think thats to similar....thats just me
