Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22352)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

I'm just waiting for JKR to tell us why DD trusts Snape. I don't think he'll be able to keep it quiet for much longer.

i-pie: I agree with you about Snape. When Snape gave Harry lessons, he never actually taught him how to defend himself, just kept attacking his mind. seemed to be taking out his hostility for James on Harry.

I-Pie says:

I do not think that JK is suddenly going to turn Snape into
a traitor. DD has said over and over again that he
trusts Snape but never will give a reason. Personally,
I would think Snape and Harry had many things in common like
both coming from abusive homes. I bet Snape, like Harry, looked forward to Hogwarts as a new start. Unfortunately, for Snape James Potter was there to make his life miserable.
Draco might try to make Harry's life miserable but Harry usually wins in the end. Also, they mention Snape hanging
out with Syltherin's who became DE, but they do not refer to them as friends. Harry has friends.

You have a point I-pie. I see where you're going with it.. I really wish JKR had told us in the 5th book why DD trusts Snape.

My opinion: Snape was trying to teach Harry occulemncy. The constant attacks are how you learn. I agree with I-Pie, Dumbledore's mistake was in thinking that Snape could move past his own feelings toward Harry and James. He does trust Snape and I am convinced that Snape is not a fan of Dumbledore's Snape's challenge will be in letting go of past wrongs and moving forward, much like Harry will have to let go of his hatred of Malfoy and possibly the Dursley's.

Does anyone think that Harry will be able to play quidditch next year? And do you think if Fudge, or whoever is in charge of the "decrees", does take off the ban and allow Harry to play, do you think he'll be captain?

Imperio Glad You're Back!! Well.. we've been talking about Snape's loyalty to Dumbledore a lot, Dumbledores motives, The links between the 4 houses (could Salazar Slytherin be alive), Harrys Quidditch regime (we just started that), The brains that attacked Ron, Luna's possible relation to Lupin.. anything else.. it'll come up if I missed something

delay says:

First, flitterbloom I agree with the logic about Snape It would be just like JKR to have us originally convinced that he was evil, but then after finally convincing us he is an all right guy have it end up that he is evil afterall. If Dumbledore did know he could do a large number of things.
1. Only give Snape some information or incorrect information. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think he was at all the meetings.
2. Use information given to him by Snape sparingly.

Finally, he might have just realized Snapes true nature

anyway enough on that though.

Yeah.. I hear ya delay. I think we all have our
opinions on whether Snape is going to end up turning good or bad, and after all this evidence I've seen, I'm sort of stuck in the middle, so we're just going to have to wait until the next book.

By the way, I don't think any of us know that the next book is not coming out next year. For all we know it might. I wouldn't be all together suprised if they would like to release it to coincide with the next movie, or six months after between the PoA and GoF movies.

I would love for that to be true delay!! I would seriously love to be able to go get the 6th book as soon as possible. I would actually love for the 3rd move to come out earlier too.. I mean, if they're saying in another article on this site that there's going to be a teaser of it at an upcmoing event this month, obviously they're getting pretty far in finishing it.. don't ya think?

Imperio says:

About Salazar Slytherin being alive, I don't think it will be happen but it is a possibility. If you go to UK Patent Office website you can find that one of the Harry Potter titles registered is called Harry Potter and The Alchemist's Cell and seeing as Salazar Slytherin was alive a very long time ago he would have to have something like a Sorcerer's/Philosopher's stone to survive this long. And after all that is what alchemy is about. So it could be plausible or it could be coincidence or most likely a red herring.
