Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22355)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

Imperio says:

About Salazar Slytherin being alive, I don't think it will be happen but it is a possibility. If you go to UK Patent Office website you can find that one of the Harry Potter titles registered is called Harry Potter and The Alchemist's Cell and seeing as Salazar Slytherin was alive a very long time ago he would have to have something like a Sorcerer's/Philosopher's stone to survive this long. And after all that is what alchemy is about. So it could be plausible or it could be coincidence or most likely a red herring.

You know what. I just thought of someone that none of us have broughtup. Who thinks that we will learn something about the Bloody Baron because he's been mentioned in every book, but we don't know anything about him. Maybe he's somebody important and don't forget that along time ago JKR said that the Grey Lady was important (I think).
Sorry if this is a double post.

Just to go along with talking about when the next book comes out; JKR has to know she can't make people wait another 3 years. I figure the book may come out in 2005 with 4th movie, but who knows.

Hey Beatrice M N thats a really good observation.. now that we've heard that the veil may havea Halloween connection perhaps they have something in common. Any thoughts? And Marauder I love your observation on the Bloody Baron.. I think Sir Nicholas has more of a future in the books too. And I love your idea from a chat-room girliegirl! Can we suggest that?

Marauder, what you said about teh bloody baron being important is a good theory.

did anyone else notice that veil can be turned into evil and live? i know its a really easy annogram(i think thats what its called when letters are moved around). also, wasnt the veil in an archway? and at weddings(atleast in america) the bride usually wears a veil and archways can sometimes lead to people thinking of a new beginning. so maybe when people go threw the veil, they think it is evil but they really come back and live as an animal?

Maybe we could start up a chat on a messenger service like AIM or Yahoo? Or like a Yahoo group?

I think that all the ghosts will be important.

Tonks Black- I like your thinking! Hm...

Prof. Andaxia Moonstar says:

Another crazy theory: I've been reading on how some of you think Salazar Slytherin might still be alive in some form. How's this for an idea? What if the evil wizard Grindelwald (the one DD defeated in 1945) was actually Slytherin? What if he had spent time working on potions, spells, and other magical tricks to become immortal? It's possible he succeeded, and had taken various names and identities through the years.

I find it interesting that Grindelwald was defeated shortly after Tom Riddle left Hogwarts. Perhaps Grindelwald/Slytherin took Tom under his wing, telling Tom about his heritage and how to get into the Chamber of Secrets. What if the basilisk wasn't the only secret in the Chamber? There might be clues and spellbooks down there discussing immortality.

This would also explain why Voldemort fears DD. If DD defeated (but it didn't say destroy) Grindelwald/Slytherin, Tom's mentor, that would make him afraid of DD, obviously a very powerful wizard. Slytherin might have become a shadow of his former self, hiding like Voldemort did after his attack on Harry, slowly regaining strength and power. Perhaps he has just recently gotten the strength to possess Nagini.

I, too, would definitely like to hear what happened to the founders, especially Slytherin.

Her maiden name was Evans, and she was in Gryffindor (naturally).

This was taken from an interview with JK. So we know for a fact that Lily is in Gryffindor

1)What position did James play on the Gryffindor Quidditch team? Was it seeker like Harry, or something different?
James was Chaser.

2)How old is old in the wizarding world, and how old are Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall?
Dumbledore is a hundred and fifty, and Professor McGonagall is a sprightly seventy. Wizards have a much longer life expectancy than Muggles. (Harry hasn't found out about that yet.)

This was also in the interview.

I was pretty upset with the death in this book. I didn't cry, I don't usually cry at books, but oh, this was really close. I was about to cry, that's for sure. Why him? I mean, now Harry has pretty much lost anyone that was ever a parent to him. Except for Dumbledore, I suppose.

I am a Harry/Ginny supporter, myself. I'm not sure if it will happen, but I think it could. And I really think Ron and Hermione will go out. Despite the mixed signals and 'other poeple' that may like either of them.

And I also must agree that Harry is a strong wizard. He's the only one that can kill Voldie. He's got to be strong. And now he's got a lot of anger. I just hope that isn't what gets in his way.

JKR said in an interview that James was Chaser. But I must admit, Snape's memory in book 5 does somewhat contradict that. The movie says that James was seeker, but you can't trust the movie. They have changed a lot of things, and it's annoying. But JK says he was Chaser, so, I don't know....
