Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22386)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

Madam Malkin says:

Yeah, girliegirl, that's a possibility. But seriously, you can't automatically say that he was a Seeker when in the books, in a memory, he is doing nothing more than playing with the snitch, and when JK says in an interview that he was Chaser. I mean, sure, this part of the book contradicts the chaser thing, but it never says "James was a Seeker."

Lol. Yeah, I actually should go to sleep it's late here. But, anyway, we could have missed something in the books, but why would JK say in an interview he's a Chaser if she doesn't intend for him to be a Chaser? Oh, well. Gotta let it go. Going to bed now, bye! Good talking to you. :)

Kadyak says:

I need to clarify a couple of points:

1) I don't necessarily believe that Fudge is acting under the Imperius Curse. That hypothesis is nothing more than an attempt to reconcile his behavior at the beginning of Po
A and the end of the same and all of GoF. I am actually more inclining toward him NOT being under any curse, rather being quite evil of his own free will.

2) My wife is reading posts to me along the way here. Sorry if I am confusing people. I was responding to a post apparently from a while back (from everyone else's point of view) about Narcissa Malfoy taking a post at the ministry in light of the numerous vacancies. It was suggested that Lucius Malfoy might have had a shoe in, but since he is now in Azkaban, his wife might take his place. I should certainly hope that one would want to investigate HER very thoroughly before offering her such a position. Nagina, once Nag had been killed, was twice as dangerous as before.

Narcissa, by the way, is NOT Spanish, though "Narcisa" would be a perfectly legitimate Spanish version of the name. The adjectival name is originally Greek, from mythology.

Kadyak says:

Oh yes, one more clarification: My question about the reactions to Ron becoming prefect was not intended to imply that I don't think he is fit. On the contrary, I think he is quite fit, especially since I suspect that Dumbledore has a particular reason for putting him in that spot - beyond fulfilling the usual duties of a prefect. As prefects Ron and Hermione may be in a better position to protect Harry.

Virginia says:

Just finished reading 350 posts and taking notes. Here goes.
1. Lots of parallelism between Volde/Hitler. Hitler was part jew, yet exterminated 6+ million Jews--what is the Aryan race if not "Pureblood"?
2. Muggles can die by Avada Kadavra--the old moan caretaker does when he runs into Volde in the Riddle Mansion.
3.Of course volde can be killed by muggles;he can be overwhelmed by shear numbers if nothing else.
4.JK states that someone "will learn magic later in life." MY guesses would be Hagrid, A. Figg, &Aunt Petunia.
5.George Can'tStandya--immoral secrecy, yes, but logical if carried out correctly. It will protect both societies in the end. By your thoughts, every government should be privy to secrets to every other government becuase spying, lying, and assassination, not to mention war, is immoral, and if we all had all the info, these things would almost never happen.
6.Snape seems to be following the path of young Anakin Skywalker. The difference is that Snape evidently is able to "turn away" to a degree. Just like a recovering alcoholic who must [u]never[u] drink alcohol again, Snape can not teach DADA. It would destroy him.
7. I doubt Snape is related to Harry; as it was pointed out to me about Dumbledore being related to him, it would have shown up in the mirror of ERISED.
8.The underworld was a place where all souls went when they died. People rarely did come back, the biggest one being Persephone. She was the daughter of the Goddess(?) of growth/plants, whom the god of the underworld kidnapped to make his wife. His brother, Zeus, forced him to give P. back for half the year as her mother refused to grow anything in her grief. Thus, for 6 mos. Persephone is with mom and things grow (summer), and when she is with him, things die (winter). Interesting parallel with the Lily/Petunia names, at any rate.
9. It may be possible that only Luna Lovegood will go thru the veil. I am sure someone is going to go thru it, I am still not sure who, nor whether they will be able to release souls.
10. Thus far, dementors are only repelled, they are not destroyed. So, the question remains, how do you destroy one? Furthermore, what are dementors? Are they mearly people who have lost their souls or some such, or are they a different species?
11. I thought it said in book one that James is a seeker. Hermione shows them the plaque. Yes, the scene in the movie shows it, but I thought I "remebered" the seeker bit. I no longer have my copy of SS; could someone go reread that scene and let us all know what is said, and which page? Thank you.

Sorry it is so long. Really enjoyed the thoughts!

11. James

Yes, I think Harry is cute, both in looks and behaviour. Do you know anything about Mythology? It is one of my favourite things to read when I have spare time lol.

Kadyak says:

I have never trusted Snape, no matter what DD says. JKR has just had DD admit that he has been making a serious mistake in not being more open with Harry. Even the wisest of men can be fools at times. Perhaps trusting Snape will prove to be DD's fatal mistake - his own undoing and that of many others. Perhaps.

With regard to the idea of DD being evil? Forget it. In all of our analysis, we might consider more carefully what could be red herrings or just too much eisigesis (reading something into the text).

GirlieGirl: No I am not from Spain. Yes, I am probably older than you - just a little.

I am a language buff. I studied Spanish from when I was in 8th grade; then I added in German. My brother was a big fan of Greek mythology, and I am a seminary graduate, so I have studied some Greek (got an "A" without ever doing a bit of homework!).

As for being smarter than you, I won't make any claims there. Besides, based on what my wife has read to me, you seem to be pretty astute yourself.

(I'm starting to catch up here - just a little).

Virginia says:

Narcissa is both a plant (with a flower) and a person in Greek mythology. I don't know about roman mythology, which was taken from the Greeks, but she was a very beautiful young lady who was totally into her looks. She offended a goddess by daring to compare herself with said goddess, who got upset and turned her into a plant, or so the story goes.

OK, are their any night owls out there? Come on, it is supposed to be summer. Besides, I run later than Pacific time, and the sun is still shinning. I'd love to talk to someone. If not, I guess I'll go..."play".
