Discussion: The 'Phoenix' files Popular (22672)

So, you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and pretty darn quick, too. Like many others around the world, you have a sore neck and strained eyes, the result of reading an 870-page book in two or three days. Now you want to share your arduous journey with others. This is the place to do it.

First I'll offer my own thoughts (LET THE SPOILERS BEGIN).

One word: WOW. And I thought the Dursleys were mean. As I'm thinking of where to begin talking about Order of the Phoenix, the one thing that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind is the book's grave look into the corruption and abuse of power (and vice-versa, the power of abuse and corruption). Whether found in the annals of history or safely between the book covers of children's fiction, it can be accurately restated that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

More on that later, but first, the death: How many of you were right? Raise your hands. Sirius was definitely on my short-list. When JK said a major character was going to die, I knew it wouldn't be any of the trio, I thought it might be an older Weasley, but then my thoughts turned to Sirius. He was given to Harry, so how painful could it be to have him taken away? That was my reasoning, anyway.

Is Cho finally "over-and-out"? Will the Weasley twins' business continue to succeed? Does the Ministry now understand how much it needs Dumbledore?

UPDATE: We now have a full-fledged forum available. Click here to start using it!

Q: What will happen to the content here?

A: Everything will be saved. In fact, I'd like recommendations on what to do with all the great posts here. Can we move some of it into the new forum? Just link back to it? Let me know (just mention my name, Cheeser, in any post).

Q: I don't like change! Waaaa!

A: That's not a question, but I understand. The new system is capable of so much more, including separate threads so people can have detailed conversations about certain aspects of the book. You can still have a free-for-all thread, too. It's your forum! Do whatever you want with it.

Girliegirl, don't put yourself down so much! Everyone else will do it for you, and you have a lot going for you.

The other thing about adults reading HP--I bet a lot of them like mysteries, and this is the biggest mystery of the last/this century.

I think Kadyak probably meant to share with you or teach you; I really don't think he meant to put you down.

I think its great you got to live in Spain; I'm so jealous. Where were you, and why?

Btw, reread some of my posts. I may not be making jokes, but I do use lol and have within the last 25 posts at least twice.

I like the way you think, and am having fun too. Otherwise, I wouldn't stay. I am trying my hand at fanfic. Do you know what that is? And, have you read any? I do occassionally get ideas from stories there that have themes which have been mentioned or raised here, soo...great minds think alike, and all that.

Kadyak says:

Why would someone cry for Harry when he loses Sirius?

The great thing about good literature, in fact what makes good literature good, is that it provokes thought about the events and characters, and feelings for the characters themselves. Getting emotional over a character's triumphs or tragedies (like Harry's loss of Sirius) is a good thing (in moderation of course).

Before I started to read HP, I had read the Animorph series, again, supposedly teen-oriented. Like HP, Animorphs becomes heavier and heavier as the series goes on. It also deals with incredible loyalty and devotion among friends. Romantic love is so much deeper than the level of chemistry. Danger is real, pain is inevitable and serious. I seem to enjoy reading about young people coping with such things.

Virginia says:

Fanfic stands for fan fiction. It is when someone takes a series (star trek, star wars, MASH, HP, Animorphs) and writes their own plot or stories using the original existing characters (and sometimes adding to them). I found two reasonable sources, I think they are HP fanfic, and fanfiction.com. You might want to read some of these. They are using ratings for the movies, G, PG, PG 13, R, etc., and many are written by adults, and many by children. In fact, some have been written by a lady lawyer in Florida.

I think that if you give the original author the credit, do not "publish" it other than the internet, and don't make money off of it, it doesn't violate copyright laws.

There are tons of good ideas, many themes (good v. evil), loyalty, duty, and most especially, love, that are there.

My email address is virginia.harrison@gci.com. Email me if you find something you like. I could email you and tell you what are some of my favourite authors.

Here I like Hgreenbacker8705, GeorgeCan'tstandya, timhgain, and others I recognize but can't recall at the moment.

I'd love to keep this going, but I am wondering if Cheeser is going to get a little understandably annoyed that we are way off topic. This is really more of a personal discussion now. My apologies to other participants.

I can be reached at markandersh@gci.net. I have an MSN instant messenger account too at markandersh@msn.com. I can't talk during the day, but I can in the evening (AK time). Usually I won't be up this late.

Virginia says:

I can't think of who my favourite character is. I love Harry, of course. I love Hermione because of her love of learning, and always going off to the library. She isn't really pretty, but she doesn't let that stop her.

I love R Lupin; he is so kind and gentle, yet I feel that he would brave hell itself for his friends, and that he might succeed.

I admire MM, and hope that if I live to be that old, I will be as wise and everything that she is.

I am sure Dumbledore will perish, I hope that it isn't so but I can't see it any other way. He must, if Harry is to succeed and grow to his full potential.

Kadyak says:

GirlieGirl: How do you suppose Harry would feel if Mrs. Weasley were to die, compared to Ron or Hermione? I think that it would be harder for him in a way. After all, he she's the closest thing he has to a mother, and he really appreciates her seeing him as "as good as a son" to her. You will notice that the only time he does start to cry (at the end of Goblet of Fire), it's on Mrs. Weasley's shoulder - and he feels that he is receiving a mother's love for the first time in his memory. Mothers are very hard to lose.

I think that while losing Hermione or Ron would be quite devastating to Harry, losing Mrs. Weasley might be even more devastating at this point.
