'Goblet of Fire' may be 4-hour movie Popular (8855)

What's it going to be then, eh? The latest rumoropens in new window from Wizard News is that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, scheduled for release in 2005, will be longer than the previously rumored length of 2-1/2 hours.

Wizard News has now learned, according to reliable sources inside Warner Brothers, that they are looking into the possibility of making Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire into one movie, four hours long, with an intermission.

It is not known whether this change in thinking on the part of Warner Brothers was due to fan inputopens in new window, or someone inside Warner Brothers who likes the Harry Potter stories enough to insist they not be butchered. In any event, this is very good news for Harry Potter fans!

Good news, indeed - although the key word here is rumor...

Yea, I was always saying that Goblet of Fire should be something like 4 hours long, because I don't think they would be able to fit everything in 2 1/2 hours...they would have to cut out a lot of parts. Ooh, I do hope they finalize their decision on making it 4 hours long! that would be so cool!
Our movie tickets cost $5.00 at the least and $7.00 at the most.

If making GOF into a four hour movie, so be it. It's a huge book, and four hours with intermission seems suited for a book that big. So many things happen, and taking out certain things would be a shame. Let's just wait and see...

I would rather have Goblet of Fire around three-and-a-half hours and release an extended version of the movie on DVD.

Four hours with an intermission would be good, but I would also welcome a three + hour with extended DVD release. The problem with Warner Brothers in that option is that they never seem to put the deleted scenes back in the movie, where they belong -- they tend to put them on the special DVD as an extra bonus. I'd rather see these scenes reinserted in the movie where they belong!

I hope the rumor to be true. It wouldn't due the book justice to make GOB less than 4 hours. Can you imagine what they would have to cut out to fit it in 2 1/2 hours. Merlin's Beard! (I would love to see Peeves the Poltergiest, his part in OOTF with Umbridge, is wonderful)

Woo! If this turns out to be true, it'll will be one of the first 4-hour movies I can't wait to see!

It would be such a shame if they but GoF down to 2.5 hours. It's too much of an amazing story!

Would this not be the first 4 hour film ever then? I have never heard of any other film that long. It would be wonderful but I just do not believe it. I can't see Warner Bros take be this liberal to take such a chance.

Like everyone else, I hope the rumor is true. I do believe anyone can sit through the 4 hours, if there is an intermission between. People have longer attention spans that some folks give them credit for.

Sorry for the double post. I'm not sure if there has been a movie that is a full four hours or not, but Gettysburg and Gods and Generals were both over three and a half hours long with an intermission. I liked both movies, but the subject matter was for Civil War fans, so it did not have the broad world-wide appeal that HP has. It would be impossible to form a determination of the success of longer movies on the basis of those two. I think a longer version of Goblet of Fire would be just as successful as the other HP movies were.
The petitions and protests may be giving WB cause to rethink their position on the 2-1/2 hour movie.

And the intermission idea is something that I wish they would do on a lot of these longer movies nowadays. I have to make sure I don't drink anything so I can make it through.... Hehe.

Ooh...that's cool...but they don't normally put intermissions in movie theaters. i don't know exactly how they will manage it...but i don't care as long as they don't squeeze a 600+ book into a 2 1/2 hour movie. that's insane

witch_hazel, if theres and intermission you sit for 2 hours have a break sit for 2 more. Not too bad like going to see two movies and I promise if they make it 4 hours I wont be as critical as with all the other movies, in those I spent the entire first time watching it mumbling to myself about stuff they forgot. Intermissions are cool, I wish they had them more often like with titanic me, my mom and both of my sisters all missed some of it to go to the bathroom,

Centaur says:

Movie theaters don't really like long movies with intermissions because it reduces the number of times a movie can be shown during the day which in turn limits their profits.

As much as I would like to see the longer movie, my biggest concern is that the increased duration of production will be so long that the cast will either outgrow the stories, or get bored with the length of time required of them and move on to other projects. I'm really torn on this subject. On the one hand, I would dearly love to see the longer version, but on the other hand I don't want it to be at the expense of losing our wonderful cast.

Yea, I was also wondering about the cast and crew...like "what would they think?"
Either: "Oh no, more work!!!"
or
"Cool! I love being on the set!"
Because I know for CoS, the trio loved being on the set, and they had so much fun. But also, the child labor laws apply.

That'd be really tight! I think it'd be one of the first movies since Gone With The Wind to have an intermission. I could be wrong about that but, it'd still be neat!I could just see everybody flocking to the cinema to see a four hour movie! It'd be sold out in minutes...I'm definately going to first in line! I hope the rumor's true...

I love the Lord of the Rings books and movies, and I loved watching them in theaters for the first time. However, owning a 3 or 4 hour movie isn't as fun in one sitting-but breaking up a movie into a mini-series isn't a fun either. Personally, I just have a hard time seeing GoF translating well onto the movie screen.

this rumor, if proven true sure would reduce the amount of postings at TLC, the posters on the yahoo board have spent way too much time on sepculations about what would or wouldn't be cut out of a 2-2 1/2 hour movie for GoF. I personally feel that anything under 3 hours just wouldn't do the whole story justice. Yes, it may make a nice story for someone not familiar with the series or with limited knowledge of it but for those of us who know them from back to front we would like to see all of the little scenes transferred to the big screen directly from the book. Oh well, guess we'll just have to wait and see, I am glad to see that they are beginning to start production on GoF before PoA is released to help keep the pace up. Now if only JKR could speed up the release of 6 and 7, hmmmm.........
