Jared Harris
, son of the late Richard Harris
- who portrayed Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films - thinks the casting of Michael Gambon
for the role is just fine. He recently acted along side Gambon for a new movie, Sylvia
.
"I didn't discuss it with Michael during Sylvia, as we didn't meet on set," said Harris. "But he is a fine actor and I'm sure he will make the part his own. But there will be a tinge of sadness when I see the films."

I agree. It is nice of him to not come down or do a comparison. It is a fact that his father did a truly great job, but he is unfortunately gone now. My guess is that Gambon will do a fine job working from the book and Harris' previous performances. He will then create something of his own that audiences should enjoy.

I think it was the only thing he could say and be fair. I have always loved Richard Harris' acting and enjoyed his portrayal of Dumbledore. We have to give Gambon a chance to show us what he can do. I am sure they cast him because they believed he will do a fine job.

Choralee says:
What a graceful and elegant way to handle an almost inappropriate question! Dumbeldore will be very different, but why would we want him to be the same? Richard Harris has left his mark on the HP films, and I believe it should be remembered fondly and cherished. But the films must go on, so now it is up to Michael Gambon to make the role his own, using his nuances and styles to bring his Dumbeldore to life.
One question, though. I think Cuaron has taken a bit too much leeway with the persona of Dumbeldore. What is up with the picture of Gambon standing with his arms outstretched with an owl in front? Looks a but cheesey to me...

I disagree Choralee. I don't think that picture is cheesy. I think Dumbledore is welcoming the new and old students to Hogwarts. I like that picture but I just don't like the Dumbledore costume. He looks like a peasant there.

Jared's reply to such a question, shows the type of family he comes from, very professional. As to the question itself, after the film is released, we will better be able to comment.

I agree Tarotx. The way that Jared Harris answered that question showed that he is very classy and its nice to think of that when there are all those obnoxious people floating around in the world. Jared Harris's answer showed how he will always remember his dad and miss him and respect the work he had done in his lifetime, and yet showed that he is giving Gambon a chance, and his confident that Gambon will do great.

It was very kind of Jared Harris to make a comment about his father and Micheal Gambon as Dumbledore.

He has a lot of courage. Answering badgering questions from the media, especially those so close to him personally. Nice of him to be so polite to Gambon.

I agree with Rissa and think that Cuaron is what was needed to take away the sameness of the first two films.
Just looking at the pics that have been released makes me think that this film is going to be great.
Michael Gambon is an outstanding actor in his own right and I look forward to seeing him as Dumbledore.

Wow, that's really nice of him to say. It would be tough seeing someone play the role your own father was so good in.

Very well said Rissa. I know many of us have concerns and worries about the new movie, and the entire future of the harry potter films as a whole. But keep in mind that JK Rowling is still very much a part of this process, and nothing goes in or out of the films really without her approval, i would think. So let's just wait and see what Cauron is going to do with this film. I have a feeling this new film will attract a much broader audience than just kids and hp fans.

It was very classy of him to say what he did especially when you think of how hard it was for him to talk about it. And he said it out of respect which is great. I think the big thing is when it comes down to it that we'll all miss Richard Harris playing Dumbledore, but just like his son we have to accept that it will be different now, but different can be good.

him saying that will definitely add closure to the role of DD. It was a really nice thing to say. Maybe it will soften the blow that the new DD will face when the reviews come in. The critics are usually harder on those who take the place of the first actor/actress. They will definitely be compared

I personally feel bad that someone HAD to ask that question. I mean, it was bad enough losing his dad in the first place, from everything I know about cancer and how the last few weeks of my grandfather's life was like (he died in 1996 from bladder cancer,) dying from cancer is a nasty way to go, now he is asked to compare his dearly-departed dad to another person. I admire him for what he said, shows he is very mature and up-minded, but he never should have been asked that question.

It sounds like he is as classy of a guy as his father was. It is sad to see Richard Harris go, but I am sure that Gambon will do his best. I think we will all be so excited to see the movie, we won't be able to stand it by June 4th!!

Richard Harris will always be the first Dumbledore....duh! well u know wat i mean...
