This is Bradford has an article on the Parvati/Padma open casting call
currently going on in British schools. Casting director Shaheen Baig, is looking to fill two major roles in the fourth JK Rowling adaptation, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Miss Baig spent last week visiting schools in the area searching for the perfect pair of Asian girls to play the characters Parvati and Padma Patel. The chosen girls will have major scenes opposite the film's main stars Daniel Radcliffe
, Emma Watson
and Rupert Grint
because they will be playing Harry and Ron's dates for the Yule Ball.
Miss Baig said:
"In this book they are actually written as twins but it has been incredibly difficult to find Asian twin girls so we decided to open it up and just find two girls. We're looking for two girls, if they happen to be sisters that would be amazing, but it doesn't really matter. We just want two good girls who have fantastic chemistry."
Shooting for the film begins in April next year and the film will be released in 2005.

Considering the history of those who are cast in the Harry Potter films, I will be greatly intereseted to see the final choices. Since all the other actors are more or less perfect picks, I'm confident they will do a great job.

I don't know what ethnic group I was putting these girls in, but I never pictured Indian-Asian. Also, just because these two girls are twins, doesn't mean they have to be identical. A lot of same sex twins are fraternal, but those don't get as much attention as identical. I think just finding 2 girls that fit the bill would be great, and if they look somewhat alike, even better!

Parvati, I belive, was a goddess in the Hindu religion. If anyone knows more about the origin of Parvati they are more than welcome to share it here. Whoever does get the role should be really thankful for the oppurtunity to dance with, and possibly kiss, Daniel Radcliffe. Now who will play Cho Chang?

I am Asian and can fake a british accent, but there would be no way in the world that I could fake that. The girls that get chosen for the part are going to be 2 lucky girls!

M. Sebastian: Regarding the word "Oriental" I was told the politically correct term (amongst the younger population... in our area, I assume) is as what ChoChang22 says -- it's to refer to items or things, but not people. The argument I was informed of was that the term was a label that was assigned to the people, not necessarily what they wanted to be known as. (Such as the N-word for blacks, and Hispanics for Spanish-speaking people, etc.) Basically, they want to be known as a people of where they live, the more descriptive the term the better, I think. (For example, not many Canadians would like to be preferred as North Americans).
Custer: Um... I'm curious to know, how many other people overseas have gotten their moment of fame? I thought Americans were hogging all the spotlight... and if this comments board has shown anything it shows how little people overseas are being underrepresented when the majority don't even realize that India is an Asian country. The British I thought were holding up pretty well in getting their spot -- and rightfully so since the majority are actual thespians. But there are British actors in very well-known movies such as Lord of the Rings, The English Patient, Bridget Jones, Notting Hill, Shakespeare In Love, Four Weddings and a Funeral, etc....

Oh well...I'm a full-blooded asian...but i'm staying in asia and not britain...how i wish my parents would allow me to skip school to go for those auditions...*sigh*
Actually to make things clear...indians are asians. When i read the books, their name sounded particularly indian to me. I have friends who are indians and are sisters. Look alike too. but they're also staying in asia. so that's too bad...
I really want to go for these auditions!!!!! Argh!

I too thought that Padma and Parvati were Indian, not Asian. Oh well! Alas, I am Asian, but not British! Urgh! If only, if only... I may be a big dreamer, but what if it turns out that they absolultey cannot find the right people to play Padma and Parvati In England and they have to resort to coming to America, then maybe I have a shot! Hehe, I told you I was a big dreamer!

Whoa, I had no idea those two were supposed to be asian. What's with Rowling and asisan girls? It is cool that she adds alot of different characters and races and stuff to the books. Its a good way to show kids everyone is unique yet we are all really the same.
