Harry Potter creator JK Rowling is Britain's biggest-earning woman of the year. She tops The Mail on Sunday's list of 100 highest-paid women in Britain
having made £100m ($1,772,494) in 2003 due to her earnings from book sales, films and merchandise. Rowling has sold 250 million copies of her first five Potter books and takes a 5% share of the revenues from related products.
Next year she will receive another big payout with the release of the third Potter film - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban from which Rowling will receive a 1% cut of the box office revenues.
Earlier this year she was named the highest-paid author in history according to the The Sunday Times.

No wonder she can afford to give to so many charities! So this means all I have to do to become a billionair is write a best selling book that becomes a cult classic overnight and is loved by people all ages around the world, so that it can years later, while the series is still going be made into several movies so that I can become even richer... Sure peace of cake! Btw, JK looks beautiful in that pix.

I am so pleased every time I read another article detailing the generousity of one of my favourite authors! JKR is so wonderful with her uses of money - charities and excellent causes - I wish her all the money in the world!
I am still confused as to why her dad did what he did. Strange situation. Must be a strange person...

WOW!! Way to go J.K.!! That's so awesome. She totally deserves it. She's given the world so much with her fabulous creativity and she has worked so hard to get where she is.
I remember seeing her on some sort of show, like Dateline or something, and she had struggled so hard to raise her daughter and she had no money. Sometimes she wouldn't eat at all to make sure that her daughter was fed. She would even write down her ideas etc. for HP on napkins while sitting in a coffee shop. She is definitely a success story that people love to love ;)

I wonder if her contract requires she write the last two books. Just think, she has made enough money to never work another day in her life. If she wanted to she doesn't even have to write the last two books. Of course she would never disappoint Harry's fans like that.

Of course she deserves all that money. I think she even deserves more! How come she only gets 5% of the books? I mean that's a lot but shouldn't she get more? and only 1% of the movies?! she created the thing! *sigh* could anyone explain this to me?

JK deserves it. I also think that 5% and 1% is a bit low considering the time and effort she put into her ideas and into her books.

There is not much to add to all the comments so far. Except, even with all that money, I do not doubt that she will finished the HP series and then continue to write in perhaps a different way. Its just something she has to do. The urge to be creative in however you can be is just in some people and they cannot be happy -- even with more money than they will ever need -- without fulfilling that urge.
