According to the next director in the Harry Potter franchise, Mike Newell
, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be the most expensive movie ever made
.
The film, which starts production in April, will cost an estimated £170 million ($308 million), reports the Sunday Mail. That's £5 million ($10 million) more than the entire Lord of the Rings series.
Newell commented that directing a Potter picture carried huge responsibilities:
"I think of myself as being really lucky. I'm going to make the most expensive film there has ever been. These things are not like ordinary films they are world events. I have millions of 10-year-olds who must not be disappointed. Making Harry Potter is like being President of Brazil. It is a colossal undertaking."
Newell also commented that finding an eight-foot-tall French woman to play Hagrid's love interest, Madame Maxime, has caused him a giant-sized headache.
"We are casting right now. I've been in Paris, looking for giant women and French schoolgirls."

That is incredible. We must be getting a full 3-4hour version. Personally I know more HP fans who are 30+ years old than I do 10 year olds and I teach elementary school. I wish people would stop labeling HP as a KID thing.
Ohhh welll.

Oh my gosh. This movie is gonna be sooooo good. GoF is the best book and will probably be the best movie. The huge budget should leave plenty of room to make a fantastic film. I can't wait!!!!! What's even better is that everyone is still enthusiastic about the movies, including the actors. HP is a legend and now the fourth installment is going to be the most expensive movie ever!? Way to keep the fire going!!!! :) :) :) Its gonna ROCK!!!!

This is awesome! I am glad that the Harry Potter movies are getting bigger and bigger, longer, and better!! I think the casting is difficult for the fourth movie though because they are so many new characters in the 4th book, which is my favorite!

How the heck are they going to find an 8-ft tall French woman?! Good luck to them.

Ok.. $308 million dollars... it definatly HAS to be a 4 hour movie. I mean come on ALL those movies are like 2-3.5 hours long, so they NEED to make GoF into a long movie. Oh yeah i think the fan base is more than 10 years olds. I'm a 21 year old fan that doesn't want to be disapointed. Oh well i hope in the end BIG Budget = 4 hour movie. =-)

10-year-olds! Excuse me? He clearly hasn't seen a packed bookstore with people there from all ages wanting to buy a HP book.
Je peux parler français aussi! Choissez-moi!
I just hope the money will be well spent. I'm still hoping that the movie will be longer than 2,5 hours! He has the budget to do so. The GOF is my favorite book and I hope that the end product is as good as I hope it to be. As for the most expensive movie, I doubt that that record will last long.

That will be an awesome movie .... so much happens in that book. I think it is wonderfully that they will start filming soon. And I hope Ms. Rowling is working on the next HP book in the series, too! We need more Harry!

The $308 mill. is only an estimation right? So it could end up being close to $330 mill.

The most expensive movie ever made? Awesome! I can't wait until it comes out. I hope it's not going be a 2 hour movie because that would be so disappointing.

If they are going to spend that kind of money, the hopefully the movie will be as long as Return of the King (3 hours) and that way we will be able to see all of the wonderful things JKR has created.

It better be good if they're spending so much. I'm hoping this means I won't be disappointed, as GoF is my second favorite book.
I also hope they don't screw up too much the cast. They already said they're looking for Asian girls to play the Patils, though the Patils are Indian.
But yay! Spend, spend, spend... especially on the Yule Ball and the final scene with Harry and Voldemort.

Well, I just hope that with a budget like that, they can make the film long enough to do the book justice. I don't care how many special effects or how impressive the directing, if it's not more than 2.5 hours, I will be disappointed.
Oh, and Mr. Newell really needs to get out more, or at least read up on the subject of the HP fan base. 10 year olds? Well, I hope he has as much consideration for those of us who are three and a half times that as well- WE don't want to be disappointed either!

And isnt it just tourture how they tell us "hey Gof is going to be kewl" like two years before it comes out? I mean im having a hard enough time dealing with the fact that Poa is coming in four mounths! You evil evil moive people you!
