According to the next director in the Harry Potter franchise, Mike Newell
, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be the most expensive movie ever made
.
The film, which starts production in April, will cost an estimated £170 million ($308 million), reports the Sunday Mail. That's £5 million ($10 million) more than the entire Lord of the Rings series.
Newell commented that directing a Potter picture carried huge responsibilities:
"I think of myself as being really lucky. I'm going to make the most expensive film there has ever been. These things are not like ordinary films they are world events. I have millions of 10-year-olds who must not be disappointed. Making Harry Potter is like being President of Brazil. It is a colossal undertaking."
Newell also commented that finding an eight-foot-tall French woman to play Hagrid's love interest, Madame Maxime, has caused him a giant-sized headache.
"We are casting right now. I've been in Paris, looking for giant women and French schoolgirls."

The most expensive film ever made. Well, being that it is to be record breaking, I am hoping all this hype about money is a precursor to WB taking notice of the huge repsonse from the fans concerning the length of the film and the inclusion of ALL the important parts of the book. After all, JKR does not write fluff...
Besides, LOTR RotK is a very, very long film, and it is breaking box office records because it is well made, does follow most of the book and does not leave out super important scenes. Anyone who thinks HP fans will be satisfied with a 2.5 hour film is sorely mistaken. Nothing but the best will do, and with a budget of $308 million, it better include what we want! It would be a shame to waste all that money on an incomplete version of book to film.

The amount of money spent on the production of a movie does not guarantee it's quality. It does seem however, that Mr. Newell has taken on the challenge of making this film seriously.
I do hope, as others have stated, that this means the movie will be longer than the others of the series.
I hope - I hope - I hope !!!

Thats awesome! The most expensive movie EVER MADE?! Frickin awesome :) I literally laughed out loud when I read Newall's quote. I loved it. And I'm so excited for GoF because I love the movies he has directed... Mona Lisa Smile I thought was fantastic. I am sure that the crew will not put all the money to waste and that we will have a product that is worth every single cent!
OOOH this is so exciting :)

I can be a French Schoolgirl..
Je'mapelle French Schoolgirl ::laughs:: Anyway it's not just ten year olds that will be disappointed. Why do they ignore *other* fans, not just little kids, 8,9,10 years old? Anyway, I hope they find Maxine all right and they better not chop the movie up, though the director sounds like a nice guy.

I only hope Warner Brothers has decided to extend the running time of Goblet of Fire, and given the budget data, it would be likely. Warner Brothers ought to listen to the fans more when it comes to making decisions for the Potter franchise than it has been. The fans demeand a film that would be loyal to the books, and one running at the length of the adaptation of the first book, which less than half the size of the fourth, would not suffice. No matter how big the budget, fans will still demand a loyal adaptation. All elements in the books, though blended in the wrting process, must still be present in the final cut. Otherwise, the franchise could be disowned. And 10-year-olds? The Harry Potter audince is not such, but I guess that is the manner in which Warner Bros. looks at the franchise. A grave mistake....

I can't believe that GoF will be so expensive, especially if it will still only be 2 1/2 hours long. Has anyone heard if the Save GoF movement has done any good to correct this problem. I am really excited to hear a lot of news about both PoA and GoF.. However, all of this information just keeps me wondering one thing: When will book 6 be released? I really need to know this as soon as possible!

They're starting filming in April? O.m.g, that is soon! It sounds like they want GoF to be out fairly quickly! I am really looking forward to seeing that movie on the big screen--we will finally be able to see Voldemort. THREE HUNDRED AND EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS! Geez, that is a lot...

Wow. I didn't think it would cost that much, but if he does a good job it will be worth it. Could you imagine that casting call: Wanted giant French Woman to play love interest/teacher? That would be strange and possibly offensive.

Yeah!, what's up with that...."millions of 10-year old fans"...i already dislike this guy...If he thinks that's the fan basis for the story then he's screwed...what's he going to do, make Cedric's death 10 year old stuff 'screen goes black when he dies "the content is for older people and not lil' kiddies"' gimme a break!...that comment was a bit demeaning...i think i like Alfonso better just from that one line Mr.Newell voiced.

He's LUCKY to make THE MOST EXPENSIVE FILM EVER MADE? This guy needs to sort out his priorities!! And if these films are for 10 year olds, I am more than 30 years too late to see them!! And with a bigger budget than Lord of the Rings, the least they could do is to make it at least as long as that film, if not longer!! I am too mad to say any more...HPANA should warn us of infuriating content!!!

I am happy that WB is willing to spend money on this movie, but wonder why it will be so expensive? This movie is still being written, and while I am sure that there will be special effects in it, is that ALL it is going to be? Maybe it is just me, but it seems that WB is losing what makes these books/stories great - the characters. I sure hope I am wrong.
