Manufacturers of children's toys come together
for an annual convention next week at the American International Toy Fair
in New York. Harry Potter licensees Mattel, Hasbro and Lego will be present, all hoping for a better year after disappointing industry sales in 2002 and 2003.
A handful of movies coming out in the spring, including sequels to Spider-Man, Shrek and the Harry Potter series, are expected to spawn popular licensed toy lines.
Lego's product line for the Prisoner of Azkaban movie appeared for pre-ordering on ToyWiz in January, but later mysteriously vanished. Thanks to reader Sirius Black (we assume the name is coincidental) and French site La Gazette du Sorcier
, we have some images available once again:
USA Today says
licensed merchandise, such as those based on popular movies, television shows and characters, comprise 25% to 30% of total toy sales in a year. Spider-Man generated $1 billion in merchandise sales alone.

Let's hope their sales of merchadise for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban are as low as they were in 2002 and 2003 so merchandise coinciding with the films may finally cease. The merchandise completely ruins the, ah, maturity of the series because I think it should agree with Harry's age in the film with which the merchandise is released; who would expect a thirteen-year-old boy to play with legos (unless it is to destroy a set built by a younger sibling)? I know I'll get a lot of criticisms for saying this...

I'm cracking up while looking at these. They look like they were made by someone who has never read the book but heard the story from another person who has read it once a year ago. How can you people want to get lame excuses for Harry Potter stuff?

I am really not into the Harry Potter merchandising, especially the toys. I am too old for most of the stuff, and my kids are too young for it. However, I did like the set of Draco and Buckbeak! Get him, Buckbeak!!

Even though they all seem pretty cool to build, the ones id like to bulit are the Knight Bus, Hogwarts Express, Sirius Escapes, and the Shrieking Shack. But knowing me, I just might get the Buckbeat one, because it looks like its going to be the cheapest one, haha, and im a cheap person.

Well seeing as how I'm not a kid anymore I'd probably be frowned upon for buying toys..but when did I ever care? The only toy I have is one of those 3D view finders and I have slides of HP..I don't think i have enough room in this place for toys but if I see something I like I'll buy it just for the sake of making my contribution. :)
