Thanks to Matthew at Veritaserum
for contacting two people, Emily and Pat, who were present at the exclusive screening of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in Chicago last week for additional comments about the movie. [Beware there are spoilers below and in the interviews.]
Emily's report can be read here
.
The graphic of the werewolf wasn't finished, but I can tell you it looks more like a monster than a wolf, and Padfoot as a dog is animated, not an actual dog. The hippogriff and Whomping Willow weren't finished either, but there is a nice scene with Harry riding the hippogriff on the lake.
For her interview check here
.
Veritaserum.com: How did you get to go to the screening?
Emily: Folks from Warner Bros. were coming around to some Chicago schools, and they went to my friend’s school. A student’s mother who worked at WB was signing up kids, and she gave me the tickets. Well, there weren’t actually tickets.
Veritaserum.com: Can you describe the scene where the dementor gets on the Hogwarts Express?
Emily: Harry and Hermione and Ron are talking about Lupin, I think, and then they blabber on and on about Scabbers, and then everything freezes up when Ron’s hand is on the window. When it freezes, everyone’s breath shows. Then the dementor’s hand comes on, and Harry faints. It’s much darker, with way more innuendo.
For Pat's interview check here
.
Veritaserum.com: First of all could you tell me how you got into the test screening?
Pat: Well, this is the second screening I'd been to; we got into the first movie as well. Then it was just some lady in a mall asking people if they'd like to see a free screening to an up and coming movie, but they wouldn't tell us what it was. My parents decided it would be cool to try, and it turned out to be Harry Potter 1. The same thing happened again, except that they were outside of my sister’s school. They just asked if we wanted to see a screening of a soon to be released Warner Brothers movie. So we invited some friends and went.
Veritaserum.com: How is the Time Turner scene?
Pat: That was pretty cool, in a simple sort of way. You just see everybody moving backwards around Harry and Hermione as they turn back time.

"That was pretty cool, in a simple sort of way. You just see everybody moving backwards around Harry and Hermione as they turn back time." interesting... I just assumed going back two hours was just... going back two hours, not rewinding it like that. I hope it's not overdone there...
I know I shouldn't have read these, but... I couldn't help it... heh.

I thought that this is an amateurish review of the movie. Well it is. I don't know whether we have the same taste in films. I probably should not take this seriously. I'll wait till the reviews of REAL and experienced movie critics appear.

I really hope they change the ending. I think, based on the reviews, I'll like the movie alot, but I wish they would have put the whole thing about the firebolt in the movie.

Wow, does anybody else think these comments are a little harsh? I think I would be doing cartwheels if I had seen the movie already...although I completely understand not liking it because the movies are just not how I pictured it when I read the book. I wonder how much it helps the movie makers to screen the unfinished film for an audience and get these comments? Isn't it too late to change alot of things? I am not aware of most movies being screened this way, does anybody out there know? I am disappointed to hear about the Firebolt. I wanted to see Harry in his hospital bed, looking dejectedly at the pile of splinters that was once his beloved Nimbus 2000.
We used to be on some studio's list, Universal, I think, and we got free passes to movies several times a year, mostly kid and family movies, but they were already finished. Don't get them very often now that the kids are grown, but, oh, well. It was fun while it lasted. I think the last show my kids got passes to was American Pie (yeah, just the kind of movie I want my kids to see!!! Thanks alot...not!)

Yay! I want the movie now! The ending sounds kind of lame though - I really hope that they change it. Or maybe it won't be as bad as the reviewers make it out to be. Sounds pretty good in general though! ^_^

Oooo, some of that sounded good and some sounded bad. Didn't it seem like there was a somewhat disappointed tone in those interviews?
I really hope they change the whole Firebolt thing...that's stupid. But, overall, sounds like it's going to be great!

Professor Scoots says:
I was afraid of this... too many changes and people feeling like it was not true to the book. Special effects are nice, but the story is what makes a movie. Things like Harry receiving the Firebolt, the time-tuner, Crookshanks relationship with Sirius, etc. are central to the story-line (not window dressing).
From what I read it seems that they are making the dementors out to be the bad guys that Harry is up against instead of Voldie... which would be a huge mistake (in my opinion).
It will be interesting to see how POA book fans (like me) react to this film. If it is as I fear, and we feel betrayed, JKR will have to step in and ensure that GOF doesn't stray so far away from the text. Which will be that much harder as that book is so much longer...
Well, thanks for posting these insightful reviews!!

Woah.. lucky Chicago school students.. but I agree with Prof. Scoots- they're making too many special effects stuff! We need to stick to the books, but they're taking out too much and (to quote prof. scoots): " it seems that they are making the dementors out to be the bad guys that Harry is up against instead of Voldie" *sighs*
hope its better than I'm expecting..

It sounds like it MIGHT be a great movie and that disapoints me. I was expecting to see an ending with the trio and them on the express with Ron recieving an owl. I understand that they have to cut certain scenes and all but to end it with Harry on the flippin' Firebolt? Come on. Just hearing the ending sounds cheesey. I hope that when I see the finished product of the movie, that I will walk out of the theater with a huge grin on my face rather than a frown. I hope that Alfonso took in to consideration about how some of the viewers were disapointed with some scenes.

I don't know, from what I've seen, once they're done editing, it should be really good. I've got faith in it all, I suppose. I'm sure it should be good, even if the preview ending is a little cheesy.

Choralee says:
I am beginning to feel the edges of worry creep in here. I know that this is an unfinished cut of the film. I realise that WB feels only Chicago based children can screen it. However, the opinions expressed have to have some merit. And from what I read just in the excerpts, it isn't good.
What is this rewinding stuff for the time turner? If it is mercilously overblown I would have to protest! And animated creatures are okay - as long as they are done well. Maybe Cuaron should visit WETA - LOTR looks authentic in their animations...
A question has long been bothering me. In a previous interview, Cuaron had said that JKR liked the changes to the film because they were more of what she thought the movies should look like. Why, why, why did she allow Chris Columbus to get us all used to the school uniforms, and very defined world of Hogwarts? If it was not like what she imagined, why did she not recommend changes? Not that I am dising on JKR, I am questioning the motives behind waiting till the movie of PoA to makes so many changes at once. All this new stuff is what is throwing us HPers into turmoil.
Well, I hope that the film turns out better then what I read above. And MunDunguS2000 has a good point - the music does make the movie! I wish these reviews were better. I, too, want to hear about intensity!

Man! I'm so jealous. I'm kinda disappointed about what one reviewer said about Lupin's werewolf state. And I kinda figured Padfoot would be animated. The dementor scene sounds scary, just like it should be, so that's good.

Whats the point of putting in stuff thats not in the book if theyre not even putting in the important scenes? The crookshanks relationship with sirius, and all that intensity and potency of the story itself? whats the point in putting those 'housekeeping...' and all those other gimmicks thatre not in the book if the essential ones are left out? Why did they have to do that!??!?!?!
