Actor Daniel Radcliffe's father is urging fans not to respond to people who claim to be Dan online, as he never communicates with fans in that way. According to the plea, received this morning by DanRadcliffe.com
and DanRadcliffe.co.uk
, a girl and her mother from Chile showed up at the Radcliffes' door recently, after supposedly talking to the Harry Potter star via e-mail:
Dear Jenna and Page,
In the light of an unfortunate incident which happened at our home yesterday I would be grateful if you could post the following message from us.
We received several calls at our home during the morning from a girl who had travelled from Chile to meet Dan. When we explained that this was not possible she became upset. Later in the day, when Marcia and I were leaving our house the girl and her mother appeared asking again to see Dan - again we said he wasn't there and we don't encourage visitors to our house which is strictly private.
Again, the girl became very upset and distressed - and this is where it became very worrying for us as Dan's parents on behalf of Daniel's fans. She presented us with two e-mails from someone pretending to be Daniel who said he were hoping to see her in London. Daniel has said this in his newsletters and I must reiterate: do not respond to anyone saying they are Daniel and certainly never travel to London to see him on the strength of a very dubious e-mail.
Daniel never communicates with fans via the Internet or e-mail for this very reason - he doesn't want anyone to be duped into corresponding with someone pretending to be him. For his fans' sake and safety there are no exceptions to this rule and anyone claiming to be Daniel Radcliffe is, I'm afraid, lying.
We felt extremely upset that this girl had been tricked in this way. PLEASE don't let it happen to anyone else.
Any help you can give us on this matter to protect Dan's fans will be very welcome.
Many thanks.
ALAN

I wouldn't think the girl stupid. Imagine how convincing the e-mail must have been. I think its sad for the girl, and frankly, frightening for the Radcliffes.

I feel sad for both the girl and the Radcliffe's. It's very spooky that she left Chile to go all the way to see Daniel based on some emails. I would never do that and I don't see why anyone would do that. Oh well, very sad.

Thats very unfortunate because its horrible how some people play tricks on other people. But its mostly the girl's responsibility because she shouldn't believe anyone on the internet. I've met alot of posers on the internet and I've never believed any of their pathetic attemps to pretend to be Daniel Radcliffe. I hate them for tricking people, and lying also. What kind of jerk would pretend to be Dan? Whoever it is must be some kind of strange person who feels the need for attension. I feel bad for them.

I didn't know that he never talks online. I'm glad to know now. now I can be sure that when someone says they heard it from Daniel online they are full of trash. I think that's terrible that people would mess with eachother and fake being daniel. That's just horrible!!

I feel sorry for the girl after she had been tricked into visiting the Radcliffes in London by some imposter on the web. Anyone who chats with someone who claims to be one of the actors from the films should know now that it is not them after this horrible incident... I'm glad to hear that the Radcliffes have informed Harry Potter fans that Daniel never chats to fans on the web in case someone may imposter him. As seen in our forums, there could be someone imposing Tom Felton as well. Go figures with the number of teenage girls desperate to communicate with him.

I feel sorry for her, she may be very young to believe that she was writing to the real Daniel Radcliffe via internet. Wow! I'm sure it was frightening for Dan and he's family!

My gosh.. poor girl and her mother. They flew all the way just because of correspondance between a girl and a "fake" Dan. That sucks greatly!
I can imagine how all are involved feel - I don't blame the Radcliffes for acting this way. But again, I truly feel sorry for the "victims," who went out all the way and using up their money just to meet the star.

Hmmm... Well that is a good lesson for everyone isn't it. Don't believe everything you hear and see online. Sometimes it is hard to tell who is who, and we should all know better than to take everything that happens online at face value!

I don't think she's as stupid as many of you are calling her. It's easy to get tricked, especially when you are young, and I'm sure the e-mails seemed so real. I feel bad for her and for the Radcliffes. I hope the rest of her trip is nice.

There are two victims here -- the Radcliffes and the young girl who wanted to meet Dan. How did she get his home address in the first place. Many people call her stupid, but I would say naive. If the email forger was able to give her an address that would certainly reinforce the thought that it was Dan writing. I do get the impression that the trip was not made specifically to meet Dan and hope that is correct. It obvious from reading the posts on this list that there are many, many young Dan fans, but I don't think any of them would be susceptible to this kind of fraud. At least I hope not.

Geri says:
I’m terribly sorry for saying this, but really, the parents of this girl have to seriously think about who they are letting their child talk to on the Web. The poser in question certainly knew enough information about Daniel (e.g., his number, his address) to be acquainted with the family & to pass it on to her & maybe others. I’m happy to know that his parents are genuinely concerned for Dan & his fans safety to send out yet another reminder that he DOES NOT go on the Web to chat with anyone.
Another question, how easy is it to find out where the Radcliffs' live & their home telephone number? Now that’s scary.

It's really sad that there are people out there who ruin it for all the nice, sane fans; and it's sad that the actors even have to be frightened of what a fan is going to do to them!
