Subtle differences and new pictures from 'Azkaban' Popular (20605)

Professor Trelawney

USA Today has some new pictures and a very interesting articleopens in new window about the subtle differences between the upcoming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the previous Potter movies, as well as some tidbits of what we can expect in the film - such as Hermione wearing jeans and holding hands with Ron.

Harry Potter

In the article Alfonso Cuarónopens in new window discusses the difference from his last movie Y Tu Mamá and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:

"Obviously the tone of the movies is completely different," says Cuarón. "Y Tu Mamá was very realistic, with social observation. Here it's a magic world, a fantasy, a bigger canvas. But emotionally it's exactly the same thing. It's a journey of a character's seeking his identity and accepting who he is. To step out of the shadow of his father, for instance, is one of the themes."

Emmaopens in new window says that she enjoyed slugging Malfoy and that she finally got Hermione into jeans:

"It was great fun," Watson says. "We did a couple of takes, and I was saying 'Come on, come on, let's do it again.'"

"It took me three films to get Hermione in jeans. To get out of the robes with the tights and the itchy jumpers. Whoo-hoo!"

David Heymanopens in new window had this to say about the movie:

"This is a real girl-power film. Hermione helps and leads Harry on many occasions."

Totally cool. I love how Professor Trewlawney looks! Not how I'd imagine her, but cool just the same. (Who's the person she's 'meditating' over? That's not Harry is it? His hair isn't that...poofy) But I'm glad to hear that Hermione is a girl-power idol type person. Hehe, kick butt. I hope she hexes Malfoy in this one...

I have been looking at these pictures with my students, and we all enjoyed seeing the pictures from the movie!
One thing that USA Today got wrong was that they said Buckbeak is a horse that cannot be seen by anyone who hasn't seen death. This is wrong, because Buckbeak is a hippogriff, not a thesteral.

in the photo gallery it says that Harry is flying on a horse that only wizards who have seen death can see and that it's named Buckbeak... Isn't that very wrong... Well the pictures was cool and I can't wait to see POA!!! =)

I noticed the mistake of confusing thestrals with Buckbeak in the Photo Gallery of stills at USA Today, though Buckbeak does look like one upon closer inspection as she has a silver-black glow about her, which fits the description from the novel of thestrals. The editor, who possibly may not have been as big a Potter fan as us, may have just been given these photos from Warner Bros. without much discussion on what was within them.

I would not call these differences in the third film "subtle" since we have been aware of them for quite some time now, especially the one about Cuaron giving the film more camera movement, though I have not read about the lighting before. As long as the lighting manages to add to the tension of the story, I will have no problem with it. Speaking of which, why is the climatic scene with the dementors not as dark as it ought to be. I suppose the scene was filmed in a studio; it is still in the editing room and will look darker in theaters. I love the wig on Trelawney.

Ariet says:

Very, very interesting article. I already like this director's approach, and completely agree with him about this film needing to approach the "teen-angst" of the trio in a realistic, and "raw" way. Not to mention, I am a big sucker for shots that have a whole bunch of little "throw-away" details. And, to my way of thinking, that kind of approach is *very much* in keeping with the style of Rowling's books. I mean, how many of us have re-read the books looking for that one small clue we missed before?

On-screen, of course, this means that Hagrid's hut is going to be cooler than ever. I thought I was anxious for June to get here before, but now... AGH! Being strung up in the dungeons by my thumbs would seem like a holiday!

And on another note, I can't wait to see more of this "love-hate" relationship between Ron and Hermione. *grin*

Absolutely amazing pictures. The movie should really bring the book to life. Looking at the kids, it looks like they made this picture just in time. If they had waited a little longer they would have looked out of place.

Stocco: I agree with you I would love to see Ron & Hermione together !even if it is just holding hands, and I am pretty sure at the end Ginny will get her man... and, in addition I love that the director puts his own "personal" touches to the story like the attention to detail, like for example, all the objects at the school and various little animals running around in Hagrid’s house, and the part in the article where it mentioned that the director uses the element of light or the lack of to emphasis’s part of the movie's "mood" I know when I read the books I picture all this , and he’s putting in his artistic interpretation to the movie!, I mean wouldn’t you?. And obviously JK Rolling approved, so it’s going to be good!

I just finished reading the PoA for a second time and I had forgotten that Cho Chang was in this book. Obviously if they're trying to cast her now for the next movie, they don't have her in this one.

Anyway -- I think it's a great job casting choice for Trellaway. :-)

Cool! I like the pictures! And Hermione slaps Draco! Yes! I love that part! but the info says that Hermion and ROn hold hands? When does this happen? COnfused! Oh well I can't wait! And another thing the pictures on that link have side notes, and the one about Buckbeack is off! Every one can see him can't they. But the note says you can only see him if you have witnessed death. That is the creature from teh 5th book not a hypogriph. Oh well.

Whoa. That is beyond cool. Does Emma rule all or does Emma rule all? Hey, HarrysGran, (and the rest of you people, too) in an interveiw with JKR she said that the films were speeding the hormones between the trio up, but that was okay because it was going to happen anyways. (Personally, I think that Hermione shouldn't go with Ron because he's a jerk to her ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME, but that's just me.)
