The actor who plays Neville Longbottom
in the Harry Potter films appears at a New Zealand sci-fi/fantasy convention this weekend.

Matthew Lewis, 14, was "greeted like a pop star" as fans surrounded him for free autographs, to the continual amazement of his mother Lynda. She says it's strange to think of him as an international movie star, but "he's a very lucky lad," she admits:
"Matthew gets some very provocative letters from 18 and 19-year-old girls these days," said Mrs Lewis.
The family are in New Zealand for a week after three weeks in the US doing promotions and exhibition work.
They return to their Yorkshire home on Monday for two days before going to London to start filming the fourth Potter movie.
"It's hectic but it's worth it and Matthew loves meeting all the different fans," said Mrs Lewis.
Other stars at the convention include George Takei (Star Trek's Mr. Sulu) and Lord of the Ring's John Rhys-Davies (Gimli). Lewis will be signing free collector cards promoting Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Provocative letters? That is an interesting take on Neville's character. I sure am not lead to provocation of any kind when I see Matthew play him - I spend most of my time laughing - he is so good as the bumbling Neville!

Matthew really seems to like to go to these things and get involved with the fans. I think that is just wonderful. Must get old sometimes, sitting at a table with huge lines and signing your name on pictures. I admire him for that!

Wow, you almost never hear about stars making it all the way out to New Zealand. I'm glad that he is taking the time to meet fans and all that. It must be exhausting to travel all over the place, sleep in strange hotel rooms, and keep up the "public persona" of an entertainer.

Filming for Goblet of Fire for Matthew Lewis commenced yesterday in London on the same day as my birthday... I wonder why we have to wait eighteen months for the next film if they have already started to film the movie -- post-production should begin early next year. Maybe the producers of the films fear they have little chance against Batman Begins, but I believe several fantasy films will have been released during the holiday season of 2005 from what news has accumulated recently.
