Interview with JK Rowling: 'Azkaban' may be best ever Popular (7981)

MAY 31, 2004 at 2:26 PM

Posted by GERI
Source: Reuters via The Leaky Cauldron

J.K. Rowling gave a video interviewopens in new window to Reuters in which she discusses Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban being the best movie so far. This interview expands on her comments previously postedopens in new window from USA Today where she credits Alfonso CuarĂ³n with everything and says that Prisoner was the easiest book to write.

An excerpt from the video:

"Nobody who's read the books is going to be at all disappointed, he has taken essentials, and I'd be very surprised if people didn't find their favorite parts in that film."

I think people are giving way too much credit to Alfonso. Book Three was ten times better then either Book One or Book Two. In addition, all of the child actors have increased ten-fold in their acting skills. Moreover, Warner Brothers is going to allow more space for the director because of the fact the HP is already proven in the theatre.

Its interesting that Cuaron foreshadowed the 6th and 7th books by accident. That means he picked up on the clues that were there in the books. I agree with Sweeper887 that one of the things she's referring to is probably the Hermione/Ron romance. I also agree with Minnie20that we don't need the movie to be just like the book, since we already have the book. You know, in a book you can describe what people are feeling and what's going on in their heads - but in a film you have to show everything with outward action - like having the rain turn to ice when the dementors are around - that probably conveys the cold to us more graphically than just having the actors shiver or something. I haven't seen it yet but if JK likes it, that's got to be a good recommendation. Stage Violance, you are probably right that Cuaron is not the only reason why this movie might be the best so far. The subject matter of the book, and the fact that the younger actors are getting better all the time has got to contriubute to it. Still, you have to give the director credit since he pulls together the whole thing and gives it its overall shape, mood, style, etc. J. K. Rowling obviously thinks very highly him and of what he has done with her story.

Wow...I'd hate to be a pessimist amongst all of these harry potter devotees, but I did read an interview about PoA being one of the worst movies of the three.
Go to filmcritic.com and search for a Harry Potter link. Last time I checked, it was the first link on the first column.

I hope the new film won't leave out any big parts like the first film left out the potion scene. I was sort of really looking forward to that!
The trailers looks very great for this one, though!

So far if the rumors that this movie is the best so far then the trend is the movies get better. If this trend continues movie seven whenever that comes out will really blow people away. THis is purely nonsensical conjecture but I can't think straight while the Azkaban release is so close.

Thanks for your true feelings on this Tahnie. I feel the same way and I haven't seen the movie yet. In reading the articles here and reading what people said, I don't want to see this movie. I feel I would be very disappointed in it. The director himself in one of these article said he shorten the movie because he felt that adults couldn't sit through more than 2 hours. If you listen to the video, he said they will have to explain some of the things in Movie 4. How bad is that! The 4th movie will have to shorten just to explain the 3rd movie. Not fair.

I am so glad JKR loves this movie.
It is an excellent film and though it varies a little from the book it is a different media and lets face it guys the movie would have to be like 6 hrs long to get at least half of the information from the books.
