Life imitates 'Order of the Phoenix' Popular (6252)

A reader sent in this disturbing news from Reuters:

Couldn't believe it when I read this article about a Japanese teacher forcing a student to write an apology in his own blood. It is way too much like one of the most shocking scenes in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This real-life teacher had to lend the student a decidedly nonmagical box cutter to draw the blood to be used as ink.

From the articleopens in new window:

A Japanese teenager was forced by his teacher to write an apology in blood after dozing in the classroom, the school's principal said on Monday.

He said the boy was taken to the staff room of the school in Fukuoka City, southern Japan, after being caught asleep during a lesson. The 40-year-old male teacher handed the boy a box-cutter and paper and told him to write an apology in blood.

The teacher left the student, who then cut his finger and began to write an apology using his own blood.

The teacher is expected to return to work in a few days and neither the student nor his parents have requested a change in classes.

Fans of the Harry Potter novels will recall that the decidedly evil character Dolores Umbridge from the fifth installment forced Harry to use an enchanted quill to scribe various apologies and promises that scratched themselves into his hand as he wrote.

Thanks to Arlee for pointing out this shocking story and its coincidental relationship to Potter.

That is utterly ridiculous. I mean, that should be illeagal. (Even though it's Japan.) I can't believe any teacher would be that cruel. I'm too disgusted, I can't say anymore.

That is purely sick. Ugg. Does that teacher not have a conscience or what? I couldn't tell a student to cut their hand open and write an apology in their own blood. I'd never sleep again if I did.

Holy crud that's wickedly gross. Unbelievable! For falling asleep in class! If I was charged for that, I wouldn't have an arm left. Holy cow that's amazing. So Umbridge-ish. So gross. Man that brings all Harry Potter things to a reality too! And the parents don't even request a change in classes, let alone school! I'd move.

That was harsh. Ow! I can imagine the pain. See, I told my mom there were teachers like that. But she wouldn't listen. Maybe this will make my mom take me more seriously when I say that I'm afraid my teacher is going to hurt us. I thought my teacher was going to hit us because no one was participating, but me. She said she was sick of hearing me and that I wasn't allowed to participate anymore. Also she said that we weren't allowed to move. She was watching us like a hawk. We couldn't move or make a peep. I was scared that she was going to do something to us like in OOTP. Well, at least the school year is over for me.

This is undoubtably child abuse-- someone should inform JK, she could actually make a (resounding) statement about this. It's atrocious to think that children across the world have heard about this and seen that no punishments have been given or changes have been made.

That's really sick!!!! I can't believe that the teacher isn't being repremanded and the student and his parents haven't requested a change in classes.... maybe that's the standard punishment for sleeping in class.... lucky we don't have that kind of outrageous treatment here in the states!!!

I read that in a newspaper, and I immediately thought of Umbridge. That is so bizarre. I can't believe she's going back to work, they should arrest her! Or at least fire her. I don't know, the laws in Japan are probably a lot different that here in the U.S. But still!
