A reader sent in this disturbing news from Reuters:
Couldn't believe it when I read this article about a Japanese teacher forcing a student to write an apology in his own blood. It is way too much like one of the most shocking scenes in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This real-life teacher had to lend the student a decidedly nonmagical box cutter to draw the blood to be used as ink.
From the article
:
A Japanese teenager was forced by his teacher to write an apology in blood after dozing in the classroom, the school's principal said on Monday.
He said the boy was taken to the staff room of the school in Fukuoka City, southern Japan, after being caught asleep during a lesson. The 40-year-old male teacher handed the boy a box-cutter and paper and told him to write an apology in blood.
The teacher left the student, who then cut his finger and began to write an apology using his own blood.
The teacher is expected to return to work in a few days and neither the student nor his parents have requested a change in classes.
Fans of the Harry Potter novels will recall that the decidedly evil character Dolores Umbridge from the fifth installment forced Harry to use an enchanted quill to scribe various apologies and promises that scratched themselves into his hand as he wrote.
Thanks to Arlee for pointing out this shocking story and its coincidental relationship to Potter.

Yeah first post. I did indeed read that story yesterday and I can say I was rather disgusted by it. Why on earth would a teacher make a student do that for such a minor offense. I don't know...I just hope it doesn't happen anywhere else. Its too Umbridge-ish. *Shudder*

That teacher was really sick in the mind. I can't believe that a teacher would be that mad to make any student cut themselves and write lines in their own blood. That story was just too weird.

Oh, that is just appalling!! How inappropriate! And to think that the teacher is actually coming back to work! All that for dozing in the classroom. Poor thing probably just had too much schoolwork piled up on him.

If it were in the U.S., chances are the teacher would be out the door and criminally charged as well as sued. It astounds me that the teacher is returning to work and the student and his parents aren't doing anything about it.

Yeah, that would not have went over to well in the good old U.S. Those Japanese are psycho about school!! They would all be in Ravenclaw;)! Haha. I've heard they have like the hightest suicidal rate probably because they are all so stressed out about the pressure put on them!!

That is just disgusting and 100 percent wrong. That teacher needs to have their head checked for even thinking of doing something like that let alone going about it. There are some things in the books that should not or even would not be carried out and that is one of them. I mean I do not think (well I hope not anyway) that people cut off their hand after reading GoF. It is just ludacris.

Ugh that is down right nasty! Who in their right mind would do that to children? I mean if a kid falls asleep in class make him stand up in the back of the room like my teacher did in high school. That is absoutly nasty that he was told to do that and of course the 5th book is going to get dragged into it. They always find a way.

I appreciate there are different standards in different cultures, but that is just... repulsive. The fact that the school isn't taking much disciplinary action nor are the parents objecting (I can understand the kid not requesting, he'd just get more trouble & his parents clearly aren't going to stick up for his basic human rights) - that's almost more appalling than the act itself.
