According to Internet reports, a zealous fan has apparently learned the title of JK Rowling's sixth Harry Potter book.
Posted to an online message board
, the information was supposedly gleaned from a secret area on the author's official site
(behind the locked door). The message, written in first person and discussing book six's progress, is dated July 1, which coincides with the expected monthly update of Rowling's site:
01/07/04
Erm... it is perhaps time for me to reveal the title of Book 6! I am nearing completion of the first draft and have definitely decided upon a title. I had numerous possibilities in mind, but as I wrote, I realized that only one did the book justice.
The more clever Potter fans may recognize that the title relates directly to both Order of the Phoenix and Chamber of Secrets. I will be highly amused if one of you can guess exactly what's going on!
On a side note, the length of the book is growing so fast, I could swear Filius has put an Engorgement Charm on it; an editor's nightmare! I promised myself not to exceed the length of Order of the Phoenix, but every day that passes makes that undertaking more difficult. Incidentally, I have much more work ahead.
Alas, the time has come! Here is the reward for you lot that so diligently figured out all the puzzles on the site. If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, I will reveal to you the title of Book 6!
The title of Book 6 is: Harry Potter and the Pillar of Storgé.
Earlier, the "secret area" in question was simply a locked door that led to a book whose pages were filled with lorem ipsum -- filler text
that is often used when designers are laying out a page (print or online) so they can better visualize how it will look when finished. Rowling commented about it
on her site last month after a hacker found his way in.
Consider Pillar of Storgé an unconfirmed rumor (and keep in mind that "PoS" does not make a very nice acronym). If it's true, however, you might be interested to know the meaning behind "storgé":
From the Greek word storg, pronounced stor'gee (like psyche), in use in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries to mean natural or instinctive affection, usually that of parents for their offspring, but no longer current. (The natural affection of parents for their offspring.)
Update: Check out this great site
brimming with everything you could possibly want to know about the whole debacle. MuggleNet also offers up some reasons
why this could just be an elaborate, well-executed prank.

Pillar of Storge? Interesting... wow, if this is true, we might just be saying PoS sometime. But even though I know that this is a rumor, I'm really really really excited. How can I not be?

I don't know if I believe it... call me a skeptic, but the color scheme is different on that video than the rest of the page. Also, I find it hard to believe that they would make this page so easily accessable. However, I do think that page may be used to reveal such information in the future, as it is a filler page used in design of webpages. Perhaps Storge isn't the name if the 6th, but maybe we SHOULD keep an eye (or even two) on that mysterious door.

J K Rowling has always said that the title of the books is one of her most carefully guarded secrets. So I don't really think that she would place it on her website.

I agree that although it's a possibility for a title it may be a bit unlikly simply because she does as has been stated guard her book titles so zelously

Silly prankster, I laugh at you. =P

I do doubt that will be the real title. There is a small possibility that it would be the real title, but I agree that she wouldn't give out the real title that easily.

Hehehe... knowing that a clever HP fan had already hacked through the secret door before (and even commenting on it on her rumours section of her website), would JK really be as reckless to post something that heavy in news, prematurely? If anything I would post something as a joke to see whether or not the hacker will find another way in (again). It's a good way to really test the security of her site and just how overzealous her readers can get.
Maybe it's just another ploy to keep the buzz going since movie 3's already released and we're back on the waiting game again...

Well I belived at first, but when I read the fascinating article at mugglenet, I am now incredibly sceptical about the whole thing. Some people are so smart, like the comments about American and British punctuation, different fonts, dark mark on wrong side of page, the date etc I would never have picked up! When I watched teh video I thought it was genuine, but these people have studied it so closely and in sich detail so the things they have picked up are miniscule but important. Has anyone picked up how the supposed title related to CoS and OotP? It must have some connection even if the title is a fake. Anyone???

You guys should read the other link on mugglenet on why the rumour was fake. As JKR said, if its a rumour, its probably not true.

Very amusing. The posts show how truly effective this was. If a hoax, well done as it gave us several ours of fun and distraction. If a hoax by JKR for the hackers, even better. If true, we will know eventually, when the book is published or before that when the publishers provide the title. Nice to have something other than the 3rd movie to talk about.

People! You must realise this is a hoax! she's still writing the book,so why would she already have the title? most authors wait until they are finished with a story before they conjure up a title for it. so consider this a hoax until we hear otherwise on JK's news page.

Looks like a big scam. Rowling will put out the title when she's ready. Until then, her readers will have to wait in anticipation.

Too funny. I love it when someone has convinced a bunch of people of something that is so obviously not true. If it really was true...then BBC would have said something, and official news sources would've said stuff too.
Oh what a gullable world we live in.
Including me sometimes. But not this time!
