It's official. The title of book 6 will be Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince according to author J.K. Rowling, who officially confirmed the name of book 6
under the News section of her Web site:
Well, the door opened at last and I showed you the title of book six - the genuine title, the title that will appear on the published book, the title I have been using in my head for ages and ages. Unfortunately, however, the door opened on the very same day the 'Pillar of Storgé' hoaxer struck, which left a lot of Harry Potter fans bemused as to whether I was having a joke at their expense by posting another fake title to 'teach hoaxers a lesson', something I certainly wouldn't do, as it would simply frustrate, confuse or annoy the 99.9% of you who aren't hoaxers! I tried to give a clear hint that the title behind the door was the real one by making the 'Toenail' joke as well (see 'Rumours'). But just to clear up matters once and for all…
Information you take directly from this site will be truthful and accurate (I might occasionally joke, but as time goes on, you'll learn to tell when I'm joking). Do not trust anybody else claiming to have found information on this site that you cannot access, however seemingly convincing the images they provide to support their story.
I never post information on the site that I do not want fans to read immediately. In other words, anybody claiming to have 'discovered' a message that wasn't due for release yet is lying. There was never anything meaningful behind the door until the 'Do Not Disturb' sign came off!
Read the rest of what she has to say, including who this "Half Blood Prince" might be (or definitely isn't).

Maybe we learn Gryffindor was half blood and he's the half blood prince of the title. Or maybe we'll learn that Salazar Slytherin was half breed.

Wait I have a comment!!! When J. K. Rowling says half blood, that doesn't necessarily mean that the person has to be mudblood, they could just be half prince or royal blood, and then half regular wizard blood. Does that make any sense??? hehehe, probably not.
I do like how some people are suggesting that it may be hagrid especially since the second book was a lot about the past of Hagrid. Also it did have a lot to do with Ginny, but I don't know how she would fit in that category. Then there is also Malfoy, I think it could be him, maybe he's related to Voldemort somehow??? That's what I was thinking anyhow, does anyone else think so???

"-SPEW-" I think that you have good ideas, but I don't think that this is true, because Rowling said that it has something to do with the second book, and what would that have to do with the second book??? She also does drop in a lot of characters for no particular reason, maybe she was just trying to show how evil malfoy is for beating up a poor ten year old kid.

Well since neither voldemort or harry are the half blood prince. So maybe it is mark evans or voldemort's son or something. I personaly love the title.

Personally, I don't like the title that much because it sounds like a Fairy Tale, "Once opon a time..." sorta tale. But hey, at least Joanne finally gave us the title, since it seems the book is taking forever to finish. The book will be, without a doubt, a very good book. I'm more than sure about it. Since the HBP is not Harry or Voldemort, I wonder who it will be...

I'm so glad we have a name now, it means that it is that much closer to it coming out! YAY!
2 questions:
1) so jkr said that it is neither Harry nor Voldermort who is the half blood prince, but since it was a discarded name for CoS, could it mean that the half blood prince is referring to Tom Riddle, because that was Voldermort BEFORE he was known as Voldermort? voldermort does not like people to know he was a half-blood. maybe HBP delves a lot into the past.
2) i also think the whole mark evans thing is an interesting theory as well, but im curious as to who everyone thinks he was born to, because lilly was dead years before he was born. was aunt petunia her only sister?

I don't think the half blood prince is Harry because it is Harry Potter AND the Half Blood Prince, this indicates that it is Harry and Someone Else.
I think that the Half Blood Prince is a distant relative of Harry who was mentioned very briefly and very discreetly in book 5. Mark Evans. Evans being Harry's muggle born mother's maiden name.

I haven't read all the other posts so forgive me is i repeat anything.
The word "Prince" seems very important. Nowhere in the books is there any reference to "royalty". Yes there is reference to pure bloods/half bloods & rich/poor but never any royal terms.
The wizarding "royalty" seems to be the pure-bloods at least in there own minds, so to call a half blood a prince obviously is important. Maybe he is prince of the half bloods or to put it another way leader of the lower class -not necessarily a half blood himself.(maybe the elves, giants and dragons).
A "prince" normally refers to a young man who then become king once his father dies. I don't think this would apply to DD. Also to me "Prince" would seem to be someone that is living in the shadow of the "King".
Oddly enough the persan I'm most struck with is Ron Weasley. He has been living in the shadow of others his whole life. First his brothers, the Harry & Hermiony. In the last book with Ron finally succeeding at Quiditch he seems to be stepping out and finding himself.
I guess I'm stuck on the idea that the "Half Blood Prince" is someone that could unite the lower class wizards (A Martin Luther King type figure).
Who could do this? Coud this be Ron?
Another Idea has struck me. Could this be Hagrid with him being a leader for the giants that is able to bring them back. Hagrid could also unite the other magical creatures like the elves, goblins & centaurs.

Personally, I've now grown fond of the Mark Evans idea. I think that it's possible that he is related to Harry, and it would make sense because Prince's are usually young, in my opinion.
So, if J.K. had said it had to do with the second book then.....maybe.....it could possibly be........Dobby himself. Call me crazy if you'd like but it's possible, I guess. Isn't it?

This title is unlike her others but i like it. The mudblood prince seems likely to be a shadowed character. Maybe Crabbe or Goyle or Seamus? Remus Lupin could be too. Quite confusing however. The book seems like it would be good.

Maybe it's Dean Thomas. Dean doesn't know his dad was a wizard -- what if it all comes out in book 6? Plus, Dean would be a half-blood, since his mom is a muggle. I think the whole pureblood/half-blood drama will come out in 6, since Voldemort really hated half-bloods (although he himself was one). Malfoy always says that muggles and mudbloods will be the first to go when the Dark Lord rises.
I'm not sure about Mark Evans -- if he's related to Harry, it sort of puts a wrench into the whole idea that the Dursleys are the only family Harry has, where "his mother's blood dwells", and why he has to spend time at their house.

MissRiot... I had the same thought. JK said the HBP is related to book 2 and a lot of stuff in book 6 could've gone in book 2. This means that the HBP could be referring to Tom Riddle. JK could have been giving us a "hint" similiar to that of Dobby's when Harry asks if the bad things at Hogwarts relate to Voldemort and he says "no," because it relates to Voldy before he was Voldy.
