Book 6 title confirmed by JK Rowling Popular (66348)

JUNE 29, 2004 at 7:40 AM

Posted by GERI
Source: JKRowling.com via The Leaky Cauldron

It's official. The title of book 6 will be Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince according to author J.K. Rowling, who officially confirmed the name of book 6opens in new window under the News section of her Web site:

Well, the door opened at last and I showed you the title of book six - the genuine title, the title that will appear on the published book, the title I have been using in my head for ages and ages. Unfortunately, however, the door opened on the very same day the 'Pillar of Storgé' hoaxer struck, which left a lot of Harry Potter fans bemused as to whether I was having a joke at their expense by posting another fake title to 'teach hoaxers a lesson', something I certainly wouldn't do, as it would simply frustrate, confuse or annoy the 99.9% of you who aren't hoaxers! I tried to give a clear hint that the title behind the door was the real one by making the 'Toenail' joke as well (see 'Rumours'). But just to clear up matters once and for all…

Information you take directly from this site will be truthful and accurate (I might occasionally joke, but as time goes on, you'll learn to tell when I'm joking). Do not trust anybody else claiming to have found information on this site that you cannot access, however seemingly convincing the images they provide to support their story.

I never post information on the site that I do not want fans to read immediately. In other words, anybody claiming to have 'discovered' a message that wasn't due for release yet is lying. There was never anything meaningful behind the door until the 'Do Not Disturb' sign came off!

Read the rest of what she has to say, including who this "Half Blood Prince" might be (or definitely isn't).

Maybe none of the main characters are the half blood prince, maybe its some kind of prophecy of something that happened long ago. I can’t help but to think about how lily sacrificed her-self for Harry, probably by blood? Haha I’m just rambling now…

It does have a ring to it though! It'll sound good in the movie trailer...

Um, well then, I'm not sure i like that title a whole lot...... when I first saw it I was like- "HALF BLOOD PRINCE?!?!?!" Personally, I think it sounds like it's coming straight out of Draco Malfoy's mouth, ya' know? If you think about it, it's something he would say, dontcha think? He always discriminates people by who their parents are, regardless of their magical ability. But anyways, I definitly DO NOT think it's Harry, cause otherwise it would be saying "Harry Potter and the Harry Potter"! I think it might be Dumbledore, I've no idea why though!!!!

It is great that the title is finally been released it means that the book release is not to far away.

As to who the HBP is only J.K Rowling knows for sure. Some theories I have had are that Mark Evans who may be related to Harry (Most Likely distant Relatives, distant enough so that the Harry's mothers blood would be very thin).

Another theory is that it could be one of the Weasley's. At the end of the fifth book the Ministry of Magic was in hot water revealing that the Dark Lord is back after they had been saying for a year that he was not and tried to discredit anyone who said otherwise. This may cause the magical community to rebel against the Ministry of Magic under Fudge and bring a new Minister of Magic, possibly Ron's Dad. Hence Arthur Weasley would hold a high position in wizard society and Ron being his son would be like a prince like figure. As for the half blood reference the Weasley's may be pure bloods but their attitudes are nothing like most of the other pure blood wizards nothing like the Malfoy's or the Black family. As such the Weasley’s have more in common with the half bloods and muggle born wizards then they have with the other pure blood wizards.

Listen everyone here are my theories as follows :
Very interesting title, and I am very glad to see that we now have an official title for Book 6! HBP - we have an abbreviation for it too! This is probably going to be another one of those titles that we pour over and over and never really find out what it is until we read the books. If JKR follows suit like in the past, this definitely will have to do with the main plot of the book. Who this is can be many different people. Usually her titles are very literal, but can the same be said for this one? For my two cents, Hagrid is the Half-Blood Prince. He's half-Giant, maybe even a Prince among the Giants, and the Giants are supposedly very influential in the upcoming War of the Wizards... Ok, first JK said it's not Harry or Voldemort, so they're right out, and it can't be Neville or even Snape because they are both pure bloods. (althout when my son suggested Snape I thought it would have been a good twist).

That leaves Seamus (uh...no...don't think so!)To me Seamus is just NOT the princeley sort in any way shape or form...which means it will probably turn out to be him, but for now I can't even contemplate that.

Then there is ...

Dean- He is a much more likely choice since in his bio on JK's site she says that his biological dad had run off and unbelnownst to his wife and son was a wizard-(and apparently a pureblood since he was killed by death eaters when he refused to join them)

Then we have...

Hagrid. I know, I know...HAGRID you say? But he IS a half blood (granted it's half Wizard/Half Giant but still)and we don't know too much about him. It has always struck me as interesting that Dumbledore kept him on after he was expelled. That could not have gone over well with anyone (when he was suspected of setting a giant monster loose on the students) so there had to be more to it than mere benevolence on Dumbldore's part. Maybe he kept Hagrid close for the same reason he kept Trelawney close...maybe Hagrid too has some greater part to play in all of this?

The only other person who I wondered about is Dumbledore himself. I mean has it ever been stated definitively that he is a pureblood? I don't remember. It would be interesting if it turned out to be him, seeing as how his and Harry's relationship is a bit shaky at the moment and he IS the only wizard that Voldemort ever feared (as they are always saying...) We know for sure that Dean, Seamus, and Justin are half-bloods. I like the idea of it being Dean because we know from JKR's site that there is a whole history for Dean that she has wanted to put in the books. We aren't told the parentage of most of the other characters but we know from Hagrid that most wizarding families had a muggle relative at some point. So we can't count out character like Micheal Corner.

I also like the idea of it being Vicktor Krum just because I don't think we've seen the last of him.

Finally, are we sure that 'Prince' means actually having royal blood? For JKR to literally mean prince the HBP's father would have to be a king. SEAMUS FINNEGAN IS THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE...WHY?

Four reasons:

a) "me dads a muggle...me mum's a witch...bit of a nasty shock when he found out!" (line
from chamber in book and movie)

b) This scene wasn't deleted from the movie. Therefore jkrowling could have told the
screen writer not to delete it because it was information needed in book 6.

c) The title for book 6 was going to be the title for chamber of secrets. That means a
character from book 2 is "the half blood prince"

d) Seamus is half blood (of coarse)

Is Tonks an only child? maybe she has a brother or she has a son with another half blood. i remember Sirius saying in OotP that his parents thought to be a Black made you like royalty.
I read on here that Snape is a pure blood. I was just wondering where we learn that because apart from the fact that he is head of Slytherin house, i can't remember any of the books saying he is pure blood. I may be wrong, though. I just thought mayber that's why his parents argued so much.
Lupin (we don't know his background, only that he was bitten by a werewolf very young. i would assume (never assume) from this he was pure blood. Umbridge refers to Lupin as a "half-breed" but wasn't he a full werewolf?[i don't know where i'm going with that.])

and all others wondering who Mark Evans is): Mark Evans is the kid that Dudley beat up!!! Therefore, he must live near the Dursleys! But in book 5 it clearly states that there are no other wizards living near Harry. But the last name Evans also comes Lily Evans (later Lily Potter). She was muggle born- so maybee Mark Evans is some - cousin or something of hers. But he may be muggle-born. But so far we can't know, because as of book 5 he is only 10 (Harry made fun of Dudley for beating up the 10-year old Mark Evans). That means that in book 6 he is 11. Time for Hogwarts letters to start arriving. So if Mark Evans is a muggle-born, He will be in book 6 at Hogwarts. And if he's not in Book 6, well than oh well!!! Hope that helps Siriushp.

As for the Half Blood Prince (Thanks for making if official JKR!!!) That is really cool. But it could be Dumbledore (if he's a 1/2 blood) or maybee, even Seamus. Because in Book 1 (and movie 1) He states that His dad's a muggle, and his moms a witch. But, i don't think thats it. Keep guessing everybody!

Also, The 1/2 blood Prince could be:
1. Seamus (He said in the 1st book His moms a witch and his dads a muggle)
2. Dumbledore (if he's a 1/2 blood)
3. Lupin (we never learned of his background)
4. Somebody of Tonk's family (she's 1/2 blood, stated in book 5)
5. Some other character we don't know yet
6. Hagrid (dads a wizard, mothers a giant)
7.Dean Thomas (definetly)

So does this mean one of them are going to die (not to be p

So does this mean one of them are going to die (not to be pessimistic)? I don't think so, but maybe we'll just learn a lot more about one of these too. We never learned much about Seamus except that he's not good at spells (hehe). But the first thing we did learn was that he's 1/2 blood. "Dad's a Muggle. Mum's a witch. Bit of a nasty shock for him when he found out."

To Spew and Sir Arthur : Listen to this
I read somewhere recently (either on JK website or an interview with JKR, I can no longer remember) that she debated whether she would use the first chapter of the next book, as the opening chapter of books one or three but is glad that she has decided to use it here instead. That makes me think that it must be a 'back in time' chapter, a bit like the opening to book 4. What do you think it will be? Do you think we will revisit the death of Harry's parents or will it be something else?

I'm sure we will find out more about the night that Lily & James died & that does sound like something that could have been explained in any of the books. I think there is going to be something unexpected about it though so in that case JKR couldn't have used it in the previous books because it would have given too much away.
I think you're right that it will have to be something in flashback though
This came from (at least that I know of, she might have said it elsewhere) a comment Rowling made on her website, www.jkrowling.com . She said that she'd been wanting to do 'a chapter like this since the opening of 'Philosopher's Stone.' Which means it's going to be

a. back in time, showing us James/Lily's death(I REALLY doubt this, but Rowling's surprised me so many times that I have to seriously consider just because of that)
b. a heavily action-packed first chapter, even more so than Book Five.

But if it's a chapter that could have been in book 1 or 3, it is very possible that it will be a back-in-time-chapter.
The whole story started with Lily and James dying and that has an important impact on book one, where Harry "goes" off to live with the Dursleys, and in book three, where we meet James's friends.
But it doesn't necessarily have to be the opening chapter, She seems to leave it kind of open, doesn't she?

But maybe we learn something more about the Order? Or about Dumbledore's schemes?

I love the idea of visiting the pensives and wouldn't be surpised if Jo used it again. I would like to see Lily and James more thoroughly studied--in book 7, though. I would also like to see Neville's parents healed and released from the hospital. I think Neville is going to play more important roles in the next two books.
