It's official. The title of book 6 will be Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince according to author J.K. Rowling, who officially confirmed the name of book 6
under the News section of her Web site:
Well, the door opened at last and I showed you the title of book six - the genuine title, the title that will appear on the published book, the title I have been using in my head for ages and ages. Unfortunately, however, the door opened on the very same day the 'Pillar of Storgé' hoaxer struck, which left a lot of Harry Potter fans bemused as to whether I was having a joke at their expense by posting another fake title to 'teach hoaxers a lesson', something I certainly wouldn't do, as it would simply frustrate, confuse or annoy the 99.9% of you who aren't hoaxers! I tried to give a clear hint that the title behind the door was the real one by making the 'Toenail' joke as well (see 'Rumours'). But just to clear up matters once and for all…
Information you take directly from this site will be truthful and accurate (I might occasionally joke, but as time goes on, you'll learn to tell when I'm joking). Do not trust anybody else claiming to have found information on this site that you cannot access, however seemingly convincing the images they provide to support their story.
I never post information on the site that I do not want fans to read immediately. In other words, anybody claiming to have 'discovered' a message that wasn't due for release yet is lying. There was never anything meaningful behind the door until the 'Do Not Disturb' sign came off!
Read the rest of what she has to say, including who this "Half Blood Prince" might be (or definitely isn't).

"and the Half Blood Prince"? Wow. That is a change! It has always been a menacing sounding title - something that inspires thoughts of dark deeds or fantastuc undertakings. I am a bit surprised by this one. I wonder who it is. And the title of "Prince". Interesting...

Everyone here has such wonderful thories as to the identity of the Half blood prince. I am truely amazed. But now of course , we can rule out Mark Evans, Harry, and Voldemort. JK Rowling herself has been providing mounds of information lately. I wonder what she is upto.?. Has anyone else noticed?

Hey everybody, I'm seeing HP3 again tomorrow!!!!Yeah!
I really don't have any idea who might turn out to be our mysterious prince... :(
As I said on the previous page it is highly possible that it's Seamus, as lots of us suggested before, but as the author is J.K. Rowling, we are never able to guess something, and get it right... (Well, yes, all right there are a few tini-tiny bits that can be predicted, but I'am talking about the thing in general.)
The only thing that I know for sure, is that I want to read the sixth book straight away!!!
But sadly - I think - we have to wait more than a year!
And that is sooooo unfair! I mean the first 4 books were translated into my language (I couldn't speak English at that time) at the same time, so I did not have to wait for years to know how the story continues.. And now...
But I don't want to sound sad, indeed I'm verrrrry exited and glad because the news keep coming day after day.

What we need to know is who the DADA teacher is. Lupin, Moody, Mrs. Weasley, and Dumbledore would be good options. It will probably be a member of the Order.

Does Half Blood Prince mean that it is someone with a muggle and a witch/wizard for parents?

Thank you LecHaRry, I completely forgot that those people weren't in the Death Room. Neville would still be able to see the thestrals though.
In answer to your question, LecHaRry, Voldemort feared Dumbledore because Dumbledore is a skilled Legilimens and a very powerful wizard. When Tom was at school, Dumbledore knew that Tom was evil and that he had opened the Chamber of Secrets. Tom was probably afraid Dumbledore would turn him in. As Madam Marchbanks says in HPOP, "He did things with his wand I've never seen before." This says that even in his fifth year at Hogwarts, Dumbledore was one of the most powerful wizards in the world. It also says that Madam Marchbanks is extremely ancient, but that's not important. Voldemort is afraid of Dumbledore because Dumbledore is the most powerful wizard in the world and can read Voldemort's mind (probably even if the latter is using all his power of Occlumency), and Voldemort doesn't like that.

LecHaRry says:
hey guys, listen to my theory... i just thought of it, i hope it makes sense to any of you... well, here goes;
I think the HBP would be a new character from GoF... i just noticed that new characters reappear in every-other book... and i also noticed certain things that are significant to every-other book... just like:
in book 1 Harry Potter and the Sorcorer’s Stone, book 3 Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban, and in book 5 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; all these three books have their part in explaining the whole story about Harry’s childhood (like who killed his parents, how Voldemort killed them, and why he did it)...
in book 3 Harry first noticed the thestrals which was still invisible in his eyes, and in book 5 he can see them already and Harry understood why he couldn’t see them before...
and also in book3 Prof. Trelawney was introduced and in book5 Dumbeldore explained why he keeps Trelawney even though she doesn’t posses the qualities of a divination teacher (true seer)...
new characters also reappear in every-other book, just as i’ve said before, like:
Lupin – book 3 & book 5..
The knightbus – book 3 & book 5
Dobby – book 2 & book 4..
Moaning Myrtle – book 2 & book4..
So there you have it... that’s just a theory of mine.. that’s why i think the Half-blood Prince would be someone new from the GoF... who could it be, though??? Krum???

Voldemort and Harry Fan says:
LecHaRry, thank you so much for pointing that out. I feel so stupid. I can't believe I forgot that Neville watched his grandpa die. It seems really weird that everyone in the Death Room has seen someone die (I assume the members of the Order of the Phoenix and the Death Eaters have watched death). It seems that JKR set it up so no one could tell for sure if Sirius really is dead. This could also show a connection between Harry and Neville. They both can see thestrals, they both see Sirius die. This opens so many doors for what you could call "The Conspiracy Theorists" (The people who think Dumbledore and Lupin lied and Sirius is alive despite what anyone says). I don't believe that, but I will give them another bit of information to help them with their theory. Lupin never says Sirius died. He only said "He can't come back, because he's d-." Harry cut him off, and there are plenty of words in the Enlish language that start with "d". Dumbledore, however, did say Sirius died. He could have lied to protect Harry, though, or Sirius could have been temporarily dead. Someone on this site said that he/she thinks that the arch is a Ministry experiment to contact the dead, and Sirius is contacting the dead people. This could make him considered temporarily dead. I will reiterate that I do not believe in this "conspiracy." I believe that this portal kills you if you walk through it...oh, just read my previous comments to find out in full detail.

Voldemort and Harry Fan says:
In order to spark more speculation on the identity of the Half Blood Prince, I will reiterate my reasoning for thinking the Half Blood Prince is Dudley Dursley.
Even if Petunia is a Muggle, one of her parents could have been a Squib which would make a magical son a half-blood, right? JKR said that someone will show signs of magical ability at a late age, so it could be Dudley. Petunia seems like a witch, but she could just be a second-generation-Squib (a term I just made up for a child of a Squib). This would explain the witch-like behavior. Dudley (if my conclusions are true) is a half-blood, and his parents treat him like...how is it worded?...it is something like a pampered little prince (someone look it up and inform me of JKR's exact wording...I have no clue where it is written), so in this sense he would be treated by his parents as the half-blood prince. I have another explanation of what prince could mean in reference to Dudley in my next paragraph (if you don't get too bored to read it).
Common theories say that it is Mark Evans. A few theories, including one of mine (see comments 301-325) say that is James Potter. And both Kees and I have pioneered the theorizing that the half-blood prince is Dudley. What do these have in common??? They are all related to Harry! This is about to get weird, so hold on.... Gryffindor was likely a half-blood; or at least it would not be a surprize at all if JKR revealed this. Harry, being a "true Gryffindor" could be interpreted as meaning a decendant of Godric Gryffindor. So, as the heir of Slytherin comes to open the Chamber of Secrets and become what could be called the Pure-blood King, the heir of Gryffindor could be called the Half-Blood King. (I told you this part is weird.) A prince is the heir to a king, and that heir doesn't have to be a son or daughter. It could be a cousin, which is Mark or Dudley. If this is all true, but Dudley will truly always be a Muggle, and Mark is a wizard, Mark is the prince. If Dudley is magical, Dudley, the older one, would be heir to Harry's "throne." This would make Dudley the Half-Blood Prince.

I love the title to the new book, and I can't wait until it comes out. How about this for a theory. Maybe the Half Blood Prince is not born yet. Maybe this is another prophesy and it's about Harry's child in the future. It could happen. Harry hasn't had much luck with the witches. Maybe after he is done with school, he gets together with a muggle. The line will form to the left ladies.

I know this doesn't involve a half blood prince, but I was thinking, and I remembered that the O.W.L. results are coming at the beginning of the book, so I was speculating the results to myself, and here is what I concluded.
Harry:
Transfiguration: E or O
Charms: E or O
DADA: O
Divination: T, D, P, or A
Astronomy: P, A, or E
Potions: probably O because he needs to be an Auror
History of Magic: T, D, or P
Ron:
Trans.: anything but O or E
Charms: anything but O or E
DADA: O or E
Divination: O
Astronomy: D, P, or A
Potions: anything but O or E
H. of M.: T or D
Hermione:
Everything: O or E
bold things are very definite

The Half Blood Prince will probally be someone we kno, just haven't heard alot about. Someone like maybe, Nevill, after all, we found out in Order of the Pheonix that him and Harry had something in common. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named could not live while a certain "equal" lived. The only reason Harry lived was because of his mother. So either him or Neville could be V. equal.
