Author JK Rowling accepted an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh
this afternoon.
The Harry Potter novelist, who lived in the Scotland capital city while writing the first book in the series, picked up a similar honor
in 2000 from Edinburgh's Napier University.
"I am delighted and honoured to be receiving an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh, my adopted home city," said Rowling in February.

Wow, you know you've made it when you are receiving honorary degrees. I've been wasting my time in school - I should have been trying to write the next popular book series. That way I can get my degree without the schooling! Congrats, Jo!

I have no idea how they determine eligibility for honourary doctorates Professor Scoots. At my school it's determined based on contribution to society, and charitable work. This year at my school we had this one woman receive an award who makes Mother Theresa looks like a bad person! We all just sat there with our jaws wide open.
But JKR deserves all the accolades she gets, and I'm glad to see she's getting some recognition at a scholarly level. We know the books are incredibly popular among the general population, but scholars usually dismiss their merit, for some inconceivable reason.

That's great that she got an honorary degree... think she'd let me borrow it so I wouldn't be forced to finish my courses - of which I can't even pick out a major 4 years later?
