Weasley dad won't be Minister; Tom Riddle not 'Prince' Popular (39416)

JK Rowling has updated her websiteopens in new window to address pressing questions about Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

She answers questions about Arthur Weasley (Ron's dad), Tom Riddle (the future Voldemort) and what is the relation between Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (book 2) and the upcoming book six.

Why are some people in the wizarding world (e.g., Harry) called 'half-blood' even though both their parents were magical?

The expressions 'pure-blood', 'half-blood' and 'Muggle-born' have been coined by people to whom these distinctions matter, and express their originators' prejudices. As far as somebody like Lucius Malfoy is concerned, for instance, a Muggle-born is as 'bad' as a Muggle. Therefore Harry would be considered only 'half' wizard, because of his mother's grandparents.

If you think this is far-fetched, look at some of the real charts the Nazis used to show what constituted 'Aryan' or 'Jewish' blood. I saw one in the Holocaust Museum in Washington when I had already devised the 'pure-blood', 'half-blood' and 'Muggle-born' definitions, and was chilled to see that the Nazis used precisely the same warped logic as the Death Eaters. A single Jewish grandparent 'polluted' the blood, according to their propaganda.

I'm so glad she made this website! It's great hearing things straight from her and not some news media that often gets it mixed up. It's great fun theorizing about what is to come.

Ja, I knew about the Nazis way of thinking and I figured that JK used the same method, but it's weird to see that she came up with the method first and then found that out. I thought that's how she figured what a half-blood is and what's not but I wasn't sure, so I'm glad she answered that question.

I knew it! The HBP has to be Godric Gryffindor! It just has to be. Harry discovered the sword in the hat. But other than the fact that it belonged to GG nothing more was said. Now in book 6 we'll get the GG story behind the sword. I'm excited!

Awesome, I'm so glad JKR is looking out for us. That cuts off a lot of speculation right at the knees and opens the door to a lot more.

WOW! I'm so glad she answered the tom riddle thing AND the MoM for Mr. Weasley! Those were two particular burning questions I had. PLUS a hint to the whole chamber link to prince - I just finished reading chamber (again) I may have to do it one more time and remember what she said!

OH - and since she made a reference to the death eaters and nazis - it makes me wonder if Grindelwald (the dark lord from 1945 that Dumbledore defeated) isn't maybe a reference to Hitler? Any ideas?

Sometimes I think her answers leave even more questions! Just like the poll questions she chooses, do you really think she would pick a question that would give too much away? But I'm grateful for whatever information she gives out, at least it is true and not just rumor and speculation.

justAmy, you beat me to it! I have thought that Godric Griffindor would be the HBP, and JKR's latest clues now makes my belief in this stronger.

Because the only reference to royalty that I can find in book 2 was the sword! And if it Godric's sword, then he must be royalty, and there's nothing to refute that he is a half-blood.. he can very possibly be!

NOOOOOO! I always thought that the half blood prince was Tom Riddle and I somewhat believed that mr. Weasly had a chance of becoming the minister of magic. Well atleast now we know the truth...

I for one i am sad that Arthur is not going to be the new minister. he would have done a great job. On the topic of the HBP, i kind of figured that Tom would not be it for the same reasons that JK listed.

To be honest, I'd never thought of Mr Weasley as the new Minister of Magic, I think he's too busy working for the Order. Thought of Tom Riddle as the HBP though. But if you're sure better be... GRYFFINDOR!

Didn't anyone notice that JKR explained in the FAQ section that Harry was not a pure blood wizard because of "his mother's grandparents?" It was always my assumption that Harry's mother's parents (Harry's maternal grandparents) were muggles. Perhaps they weren't. Is this a clue? What do you all think?
