Contrary to reports
published over the last week, Harry Potter author JK Rowling has vehemently denied
creating narcissistic Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in the image of her ex-husband.
The character, played by Kenneth Branagh in Chamber of Secrets, was brought up when Rowling was asked at the Edinburgh International Book Festival if she had ever let real acquaintances influence her story's cast:
The only character who is deliberately based on a real person is Gilderoy Lockhart ... I have to say that the living model was worse. He was a shocker! The lies that he told about adventures that he'd had, things he'd done and impressive acts that he had committed...
Apparently the Sunday Mail, a tabloid which started the rumor's perpetuation amongst more reliable press, interpreted Rowling's comments as "revenge" on her former husband, Jorge Arantes, whom she was with for two years.

That is so stupid...its amazing how these tabloids can blow something so out of proportion. Anyway...if I'm not mistaken, wasn't Lockhart based on another author?

I've read several bios on J.K., and Lockheart seems not to be like her first husband was described at all. He wasn't all that bad to begin with, but he became rather nasty near the end.

That's really sad. Tabloids will make up anything for a story.

Just more proof that journalists (if that's what you'd like to call tabloid writers) will do anything to get (or create) a story. I'm sure that if a character was based on her ex, HE would be the first to notice and tell the world. Obviously, if he doesn't find it to be offensive (and I'm sure he'd have brought it up in court if he did) then it's probably not about him. Sheesh, tabloids, get a life

I didn't even know that anyone would ever think that Lockhart was so-called based on Jo's ex... and now she's denying it. I guess it wasn't true, then!

Tabloids do anything for a story, and quite frankly most of the stuff they do makes me sick. As soon as Mary-Kate turned 18, they decided her problem wasn't an eating disorder, but drugs. Let's get with the program, huh guys? JKR would never do that!

I don't understand why tabloids are allowed to get away with this kind of thing. I mean she had already stated on her site that he was modeled after an acquaintance I thought.

Thats really rude. I never beleived that she would base Lockhart on her ex, I mean come on! But the more lies they can get that make the story better is what the tabloids try to do. They sell more that way.

She doesn't deserve this! It's so nasty the way newspaper and reporters make up stupid stories about other peoples' lives because they have nothing better to do with their own life.
Even if he was based on Lockhart...then so what??? We don't know what he was like!!! Honestly, people are so judgmental.
I don't care what anyone says...Jk doesn't do this and no stupid newspaper report will stop her being my hero.

Oh please. Tabloids are so stupid. She is not trying to get revenge on someone by writing Lockhart, she said herself that the person she based him on would have no idea it was him.

JKR is a leo and therefore has too much pride to come off as petty as making a character a mirror of her ex for revenge.

I think the first time I read about Lockhart being based on a real person was JKR's website. I never imagined it to be her ex-husband. Pah-leeeze! The courts would have a heyday with something like that. I always imagined it to be a colleague at some teaching position that JKR held. Or, perhaps the parent of a student who was performing less than "Troll." Regardless, I think it's time to put this rumor to sleep. She said that the real "Lockhart" would never guess, so we oughta' leave it at that.
