Although missing a familiar famous face, over 125 kids and teenagers attended the St. Lawrence Junior Carp Tournament
in New York this weekend.
Draco Mafloy actor Tom Felton, an avid carp fisherman, was absent due to filming commitments on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but the event drew even more people than last year, according to the New York Times
:
... In August 2002, Mr. Felton's mother offered him a trip to anywhere in the world to celebrate the completion of filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second Harry Potter movie.
Tom chose eight days along the St. Lawrence River, an unspoiled haven for carp that is well known by Europeans but virtually unrecognized by Americans, who much prefer fishing for bass. Tom, 16, and his older brother, Chris Felton, fished night and day by a tent they pitched on the riverbank and caught an estimated 3,000 pounds of carp.
Felton later agreed to sponsor the junior tournament, the first of which was held last year and drew 100 children. We covered it here on HPANA, complete with pictures of Tom's prized catches over the years. There's even more pictures
of Tom's fishing over at Tom Felton Online.

Well, at least we all know that Tom and everyone else is working hard on GoF to make it out by the release date! I feel bad that he had to miss something he liked so much though, but I'm sure once Goblet wraps he'll take another nice vacation!

It is too bad that Tom Felton couldn't make the carp contest, but let's admit it, what is more important than him being one of the stars of Harry Potter?
Sounds like he is crazy about carp fishing!

oh noes.
I'm surprised they wouldn't give him time off, or let him go when they don't need him - considering Draco isn't in a whole lot of scenes in all actuality. Not in comparison to Ruper, Emma and Daniel.

Right, I am home in New York for the summer and gorgeous Tom is not here! But, atleast it is for a good cause. Maybe when I get back to the UK for school me and my friends can try and find out where they are filming and take a peek ;) !

That is sad that he had to miss something he loves so much. I know more people who fish for bass or catfish. I'm not much of a fishing person but admire those who have the patience to sit there and wait for the fish.

I've read that Tom really loves this tournament specifically so I'm sure it was tough for him to miss it this year. (And what's not to love about that gorgeous part of NY state?!) I hope he's able to make a trip some other time.

I was going to go up there to see him, but it didn't happen, and then I had to have a bit of foot surgery, so I wouldn't have been able to go anyway.
But oh well! Maybe he'll go next year ...at which point, I'm hoping, I'll still be an avid fan of his ...

Three thousand pounds of carp? Blech! What the heck are they going to do with all that? Certainely they're not going to eat it?!?! Tom can come fish at the lake behind my house anyday, the only fish we have are carp. I don't really understand fishing anyway, but carp fishing is even worse. How bizarre. Hopefully Tom will have some leisure time soon.
