Acclaimed independent film director Mira Nair
has been invited to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, according to Brazilian entertainment site Cinema em Cena
.
The site links Warner Bros.' choice of Alfonso Cuarón, a relatively obscure director prior to helming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, with their report. Nair directed 2001's Monsoon Wedding and the just-released Vanity Fair.
When contacted by HPANA, an intern at Nair's offices in New York said she wasn't aware of any such announcement, but now The Times of India has quotes
from the director saying she read the book over the weekend and is "still deciding":
I never let fame go to my head: "I'm getting offers to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I read it over the weekend. I'm still deciding... I'm not letting all this go to my head. I'm grounded. I practise detachment, it helps me keep my balance. I'm a Dilliwalli [someone from Delhi], only an asana [a position in Yoga] gets me on my head! My son Zoharan's excited. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies with him."
Thanks to OdFHP.com
and our own Geri for the tips.

Well, I will believe it when it is announced from WB or by Jo herself. There are so many people that just love to stir the pot by putting out stuff like this.

Personally, I'd like to see Alfonso Cuarón continue working on the HP movies. At very least, OotP. He made PoA absolutely beautiful. Oh well...let the rumours begin for the next 3 movies. I'm with whomever it was that said it...I'll wait for WB or Jo to announce it before getting any notions about ANYthing.

PS: Yes I 100% agree with Alfonso's work. He has done an amazing job on The Prisoner of Azkaban and to have him back for The Order of the Phoenix will be good. But I'm not sure that he will want to. I remember reading something (thinks of Hermione saying that) about him only wanting to direct POA.
As for Cris Colambus....erm...well the first two were good but his work seems kinda flat to me if that makes any sence at all. I dunno bought him.....

even though she directed the monsoon wedding, which I believe is good although i haven't seen it yet, my vote for now is still for alfonso cuaron. i've seen mira nair's filmography in imdb, which is quite impressive yes, but not fit for a harry potter movie (i think), much more the 5th one, which is the darkest story to date.
so i hope alfonso cuaron would be back. :)

Necer heard of her...but I'm sure if she is chosen, she will be great!!! but anyway, it doesn't sound like there is much truth in this! Why do newspapers and stupid websites and magazines make up stupid rumours like this?? Actually, I know...It's because they are so sad that they have nothing better to do with their life than try to ruin other peoples'...I'm sick of people doing this to JKR.

I heard that those movies are good so you won't hear complaining from me. It will be cool if they use a new director for each film.

Vanity Fair looks nice, so maybe she's a keeper. But, with her not knowing of any such announcement, we can only take this as a rumor until it is confirmed.

I'm thinking that this is a rumor, but who knows? All I can say is if there is a new director for the next movie, she had better do a good job! All of the movies thus far have been excellent, so she will have a lot to live up to!! But, on the other hand, I'm sure if she were offered the job in the first place she will do a good job of it. If this IS true, let's hope I'm right!!

I have to say it is hilarious that some people have expressed horror over a woman directing an HP movie. JKR is a woman, remember?! Obviously JKR can write male characters extremely realistically so what makes people think a woman director would get it all wrong?
That said, I have always imagined Cuaron returning for OotP. I think he did say he'd consider doing another of the series in an interview later in the promotions for PoA. For some reason I see PoA and OotP being similar in tone (dark) and the whole teen angst thing that Cuaron does so well is rampant in OotP (moreso than in GoF).
However, I wouldn't be crushed if Cuaron doesn't return. I love the thought of a new director for each film. As I've said before, it's the books I care most about. The films are just cool added bonuses. I love the thought of them creating another dimension to the stories (like PoA did). I'm treating this as rumor, but I think it'd be very intriguing to have Mira Nair take on OotP.
