Acclaimed independent film director Mira Nair
has been invited to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, according to Brazilian entertainment site Cinema em Cena
.
The site links Warner Bros.' choice of Alfonso CuarĂ³n, a relatively obscure director prior to helming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, with their report. Nair directed 2001's Monsoon Wedding and the just-released Vanity Fair.
When contacted by HPANA, an intern at Nair's offices in New York said she wasn't aware of any such announcement, but now The Times of India has quotes
from the director saying she read the book over the weekend and is "still deciding":
I never let fame go to my head: "I'm getting offers to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I read it over the weekend. I'm still deciding... I'm not letting all this go to my head. I'm grounded. I practise detachment, it helps me keep my balance. I'm a Dilliwalli [someone from Delhi], only an asana [a position in Yoga] gets me on my head! My son Zoharan's excited. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies with him."
Thanks to OdFHP.com
and our own Geri for the tips.

Wow, well I guess it's been somewhat confirmed since she said that she read it. It would be neat to have a female direct one of the movies, it might give it a different feel!

Well, it seems that WB is pushing forward with OotP. Trying to secure a director to begin preproduction on a film at least 3-4 years away from release. Is it possible that David Heyman is feeling the growing fame and increasing age of his lead cast is going to put him in the position of recasting? Mike Newell wasn't confirmed for GoF until well after principle filming had been completed for PoA.

I don't care who directs it as long as they are good and won't change the story because they feel like it like Cuaron did!!

This is defenitely made up. Unlike SOME of you in this forum, I DO NOT want Chris Columbus to direct ANY "Harry Potter". Of course, everyone is entitled to his own opinion. I just could not stand to see another artless and heartless "Harry Potter" movie anymore. I hope Cuaron goes back to the franchise.

well okay, so it's an update... I wonder why it's taking her so long to make a decision... my goodness... maybe the role of directing it is just too big a job for her... well at least in her mind... I suppose we'll have to see won't we.

I dunno OOTP is a pretty big project. Why not offer it someone that the WB knows is into the HP world already or that they know is a very good director such as the guy that directed LOTR or people like that??

I still think this is weird that the director is being announced already when as far as I know, there isn't even a script written! Imdb.com has Steve Kloves listed for the screenplay for the fifth, but I thought he passed on it to work on something else? I mean, is someone already working on the screenplay? Why is the director of the fifth film already beind discussed? This just doesn't make sense. Didn't the announcement of Newell come about just before or shortly after the fourth film was released?
I'm still putting my hopes on Alfonso Cuaron coming back at some point in the series. He was so fantastic, I think he'd be a great choice for the fifth film. Otherwise, maybe he'll come back for the sixth or seventh films.
I haven't seen any of Nair's films, but I think I'll have to go see Vanity Fair now to check out what her film style is like.

Firstly, for those of you who don't know who Mira Nair is, she is a great director, she directed Vanity Fair, which was a great movie. Secondly, even though I like MIra Nair, i really doubt that she is going to be directing the 5th installement to HP for many reasons: I believe it's way to early to determine the director for the 5th installement, secondly just because some magazine had it in quotes doesn't mean that those were the exact words that came out of her mouth, journalists tend to mangle things and sometimes stretch the truth, and I also heard that two other directors are "looking through the book and deciding on directing it." At this point I'm not really paying any attention to whose gooing to direct the 5th installement, because truthfully i don't know what to believe!

I dont know why they have to keep changeing directors? Some of the reviews that I have read from Vanity Fair have been all over the place...
Besides I think that it is too early to choose a new director, they have only just started filming the 4th!!

A female director would be really cool, as all the directors so far have been male and the screenwriter is also male.

I hope its not true. I want Alfonso back for OotP. This doesn't make sense anyway. You'd think that the producers would automatically ask the past 3 directors that they've had so far before looking for a new one. Its alittle insulting to Mike Newell since he's hard at work right now on GoF. If anybody should be asked it would be CC, AC and MN.

I really like the idea of an independent film director because it'll most likely make the films more artsy. I liked POA for that feeling but that doesn't mean there weren't nits to pick.
