Acclaimed independent film director Mira Nair
has been invited to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, according to Brazilian entertainment site Cinema em Cena
.
The site links Warner Bros.' choice of Alfonso CuarĂ³n, a relatively obscure director prior to helming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, with their report. Nair directed 2001's Monsoon Wedding and the just-released Vanity Fair.
When contacted by HPANA, an intern at Nair's offices in New York said she wasn't aware of any such announcement, but now The Times of India has quotes
from the director saying she read the book over the weekend and is "still deciding":
I never let fame go to my head: "I'm getting offers to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I read it over the weekend. I'm still deciding... I'm not letting all this go to my head. I'm grounded. I practise detachment, it helps me keep my balance. I'm a Dilliwalli [someone from Delhi], only an asana [a position in Yoga] gets me on my head! My son Zoharan's excited. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies with him."
Thanks to OdFHP.com
and our own Geri for the tips.

I really like the idea of an independent film director because it'll most likely make the films more artsy. I liked POA for that feeling but that doesn't mean there weren't nits to pick.

This will be interesting...She has such a different style than the other directors thusfar...it's really impressive to me that they have chosen to work with so many different directors for this project either way. Each story has a very different feel to it depending on what each director brings to the mix...I hope she does it! It will be fascinating to see a womans take on the story other than JK Rowling...

She certainly has a lot of praise and acclaim to follow her around. I am interested to hear what her decision is. I haven't personally seen any of her movies but I would be interested to see what her style is. I think that it would be great if she is a director that is one who pays attention to detail and is able to catch a dark story. Hmn...I don't know what she is going to pick. At least she read the book before she is making a decision and she has seen the movies, its better then Alfonso Cuaron.

I don't think this is true and I have never heard about her before. If it is true and he directs the next film, I hope she does a good job.

Sounds promising. I was hoping that Curan would get the go ahead for OOTP, since it is a very dark book. It is much like POA and I would have thought he would be a great match. However, it appears likely that books 6 and 7 are liable to be dark as well so there is always hope. In addition, I think a new director increases the chances that the trio will stay on. They like to expand there experiences working with directors and this is a great way to do it.

She sounds wicked for OotP. I thought Mike Newell was suppose to do it though? Maybe I'm wrong ... anyway, i'm sure she'll be an awesome director if she takes the job.

Well at least she is still deciding on whether to do it or not. I think she would do a good job if she did OoTP. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I hope we get a new director for each and every movie. I mean, look at the first two: both were done by Columbus, and both weren't as "scary" as they perhaps needed to be. Cuaron brought a lot to the movies... even if he cut a lot and switched the order of events a tad. I hope Newell makes a great GoF, and if this is true, I hope Nair does a good job on OotP, as well.
And RoNi_LuVs_DaN, Mike Newell is directing Goblet of Fire, which is currently filming in Scotland.

As long as the person does the book justice in the directing, Kermit the Frog could direct for all I care! I just want to see a great movie produced from the book! I mean, it's one of the 5 best books in the series! (Get my joke?? hehe)

Well... I still prefer the first 2 movies directed by Christopher.. I think they're the best... In my opinion, the third movie fell below the expectations... So little of Quidditch... Gryffindor won that Quidditch Cup only that year so far... In GOF, there wasn't any quidditch match in Hogwarts and Harry was banned in OftP... I was really disappointed after watching GOF...

I loved vanity Fair!(the book) if she does direct, it would be cool... I really liked the look of Alfonso Curion (i didnt spell that right at all) I just didnt like how it was so short, and things were cut, and some of the casting. (which made it a sucky movie with cool backgrounds)
I think Vanity Fair would be a change, but not much.

I think it could be true...I don't think Mike Newell is directing book 5...
"And they changed the Fat Lady AND Cornilius Fudge. I mean, What's up with that?"-the_lost_slytherin. In my opinion Dawn French did an excellent Fat Lady, and it wasn't Alfonso's fault it was a different actress. Cornileus Fudge is played by Robert Hardy in both CoS and PoA. :)
"Well at least we know that the fifth book will be made"- Supreme Mugwump. Ummm... Considering the older actors all have contracts for all 7 movies, I think they're doing all 7. :)
