Acclaimed independent film director Mira Nair
has been invited to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, according to Brazilian entertainment site Cinema em Cena
.
The site links Warner Bros.' choice of Alfonso CuarĂ³n, a relatively obscure director prior to helming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, with their report. Nair directed 2001's Monsoon Wedding and the just-released Vanity Fair.
When contacted by HPANA, an intern at Nair's offices in New York said she wasn't aware of any such announcement, but now The Times of India has quotes
from the director saying she read the book over the weekend and is "still deciding":
I never let fame go to my head: "I'm getting offers to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I read it over the weekend. I'm still deciding... I'm not letting all this go to my head. I'm grounded. I practise detachment, it helps me keep my balance. I'm a Dilliwalli [someone from Delhi], only an asana [a position in Yoga] gets me on my head! My son Zoharan's excited. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies with him."

and our own Geri for the tips.

I think Mira Nair is absolutely perfect for the job. OOTP is a very character-driven book, with the most complex character interactions; there isn't much dependence on special effects and action, and I think Mira Nair could capture that style perfectly. Her other film Monsoon Wedding was wonderful.

Cool- independent directors always have nice touches to add to movies that other directors don't. I want to see Vanity Fair, and if it is good, then I rest in peace that OotP won't be completely destroyed.

Well, I haven't heard of her, nore have I seen any of her movies. If this does end up being true, I hope she does a good job. Looking at her filmography, she has not directed hardly anything I have heard of, but sometimes that can be a good thing. Whoever ends up directing the movie, I hope it lives up to the expectation I have set in my mind.

I doubt they would stay with the director right now since they have been changing directors almost every movie and they need to make up their minds before one of the directors makes a bad movie out of the franchise... That would be absolutely horrible.

I still haven't seen Vanity Fair, but it looks good. I just wish Alfonso Cuaron would come back. Mike Newell is directing the GoF, but I don't know about being offered to do OotP.

If she does get to the job, I hope she's good. I haven't seen any of the movies listed for her. But I was kinda hoping Alfonso Cuaron would do the 5th one... Since he did such a good job on POA and poa is a dark book, and ootp is even darker... I still want him to do the 5th one tho... He would be good for that movie I think.

I was hoping Alfonso Cuaron would come back fot yhe 5th too, I think he would do a good job on it. I never heard of any of the movies she directed. But I think I'll see Vanity Fair just to see if it's any good and to see what her style is.

I just don't want them to change directors because it might change the consistency. I mean, as good as the third one was, there were significant differences from the first two, and what would happen if more was changed?

Well....I've got mixed feelings I guess...It's always interesting to see what a new director will do and I liked seeing the 2 different directors' ideas in SS/CoS and PoA...but at the same time, I hope that it doesn't stray too far from the book. I don't know anything really about this new director, but she sounds cool, as long as the movie turns out good!

I've been meaning to rent Moonsoon Wedding for ages. It looks like now is the time. I'd love to see her work. Also, any director who is also a yogini surely has some well groundedness about her.
Regardless, I'll wait for an official nod before getting my knickers in a bunch.

I wish they would just keep the same director so the movies will be consistently good. If they keep changing directors the movies might not turn out as good as the first 3. But it is pretty cool that a woman could be directing!

Monsoon Wedding is a beauitiful movie, not much as the typical Indian films, with a lot of dancing and singing. It is beatifully staged.
Well, if she is to be the director for HP5, just be ready for the best she can offer.

It'll be like the whole world on her shoulders... OotP's action packed, revealing, dangerous & I think, the most emotional book of the series... A real roller coaster ride. Let's see how she does bringing the death of [spoiler] to the big screen...

I've learned to never believe rumors until they are confirmed by the studio or JK herself. I never heard of this director though. It's quite interesting how they keep changing them. I think it's kind of cool cause it may give each movie a different feel.

I have never seen any of Mira Nair's work, but she must be first class if they are considering her.
Why do they need a new director each movie?
Another good aspect about Mira Nair is I am all for women doing important things.

I thought that this was a rumor.
I guess not.
I really thought it wasn't true also.
Why would they be planning movie five, with movie for not even half made yet?
Filming probably wouldn't start until 2006.
I know these things are planned ahead, but I think that is a bit ridiculous.
Oh well.
I guess what is happening is happening, whether or not what I think.

I agree with Muggleborn22 (from the first page), I think PoA was butchered AND that Chris should have stayed with all of the films.. but he probably wanted to go off and direct other stuff. He totally knew what he was doing. About Alfonso.. he was new and had his own way of things. Seriously for a while, I thought the person who played Gandalf from LOTR was gonna play the new Dumbledore.. that woulda been sick! The new one was ok. He seemed a little more like the 'real' Dumbledore because he had more jokes I think. I always imagined him as a funny guy, who although looked old, was hysterically funny. Anywho, I haven't heard anything about this Vanity Fair movie that Mira Nair's directed.. but anyways I just hope this all works out. I'm expecting the upcoming movies/books to be the best, and I hope that i'm not the only one expecting it.
