Acclaimed independent film director Mira Nair
has been invited to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, according to Brazilian entertainment site Cinema em Cena
.
The site links Warner Bros.' choice of Alfonso CuarĂ³n, a relatively obscure director prior to helming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, with their report. Nair directed 2001's Monsoon Wedding and the just-released Vanity Fair.
When contacted by HPANA, an intern at Nair's offices in New York said she wasn't aware of any such announcement, but now The Times of India has quotes
from the director saying she read the book over the weekend and is "still deciding":
I never let fame go to my head: "I'm getting offers to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I read it over the weekend. I'm still deciding... I'm not letting all this go to my head. I'm grounded. I practise detachment, it helps me keep my balance. I'm a Dilliwalli [someone from Delhi], only an asana [a position in Yoga] gets me on my head! My son Zoharan's excited. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies with him."

I seriously think this is a rumor. The filming for GoF just started recently, so I seriously doubt they have even begun writing the script for OotP. Whatever happened to "one film at a time"?

I agree with many already, it is much too soon to jump to conclusions about directing, and I'm as clueless as some, who on Earth is Mika Nair? She sounds a bit like McNair :P

Wow! A woman director. Interesting. But why would WB be trying to line up a director for OotP? Shooting has just started on GoF. Maybe David Heyman is feeling the crunch of the franchise timeline. I know he is always talking about the lead actors growing up too fast. It is possible that he already has Kloves working on the script for film 5. Which would explain the hunt for a director. Who knows. As said above it is al rumour until confirmed!

Well, I thought they'd get Alfonso to do it again. He did such a great job with PoA and it was dark enough... seeing as how OotP would be even darker than that, I expected him to do it. We'll have to find out more about this Nair woman before I make a decision as to whether or not she'll be good to direct this film.

Whoever the director is, I hope they do a good job. I liked PoA. It's not in line with the book, but it feels like an actual movie. If you wanted the movie to be exactly like the book, then read the book!

I have never heard of this person. Doesn't it seem like we're getting ahead of ourselves. GoF isn't even coming out for over a year so we shouldn't really be worrying about a movie that's not coming out till a while after that.

It probably is a rumour if she hasnt heard about it. Hopefully whoever directs it makes it even better then the first three because i dont think Alfonso or Chris disappointed us fans.

Well, I haven't heard of this woman, Mira Nair, so I can't really say anything about her, good or bad. She did direct Vanity Fair, which I want to see!

I hear her movie "Vanity Fair" is supposed to be very well done. I would also imagine that someone has started to write the screenplay for OotP. It's always good to get a head start!

Well I have only seen previews of "Vanity Fair", which doesn't look to bad. I have not seen "Monsoon Wedding". All I can say is if it is true I hope she will do a good job.

I won't believe it until it's confirmed, like most other rumors that are going around nowadays. I have been looking forward to Vanity Fair ever since I saw the preview, so maybe I'll have some opinion after I see it!

Ok I like her movies but.. Harry Potter!! I hope its a rumor as well. Chris Columbus was the best in my opinion. I am surprised they haven't asked Steven Spielberg or George Lucas to do it.. or both of them.. they in my opinion would be good. Even Ron Howard wouldn't be bad. I guess we will know when it happens.

I have never seen any of her movies but she definitely has a good track record. I however don't think it's true not only because of what was said in the article but also they seem to have a trend of asking "big" directors to do the Harry Potter films. It seems she's been doing smaller movies but I wouldn't mind seeing her try something out. :-)

Mira Nair is a director from India.

Mira Nair? I wouldn't have though of her to direct a HP movie. This also could be a rumor though. I like her work (Vanity Fair i absolutely loved)! But if I had to guess, I think it's just a rumor, I can't really see her doing a HP installement.

Don't know if this is true or not. But, hmm.. I get a little nervous with all the direct switching. Although, I was worried about Alfonso and I thought he did an incredible job. I hope Newell does wait he promises. But why aren't any of the directors sticking with the film? Why all the switching? Don't they like directing these?
