MuggleNet and the HP Lexicon, both Fan Site Award winners
on JK Rowling's official web site, have posted an open letter
to the Harry Potter author in the hopes that she'll visit again and answer some nagging questions about her books and characters.
First, let us say that we don't want to know any big secrets from upcoming books. What fun would that be? We want to be surprised when we read them. However, there are some more mundane things that we'd love to know. As obsessive as we are, we would love to have some nagging things answered, partly to add missing details into the Lexicon and MuggleNet's pages, but also just because it's fun to learn these kinds of things.
Some of the questions: How many students are there at Hogwarts? How old are Molly and Arthur Weasley? Are there other Gryffindors in Harry's year besides the ones we've met in the books? Be sure to check out the letter for the full list of questions.
Meanwhile, Rowling is a candidate for 2005's Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award
, one of the most prestigous accolades in children's literature. Thanks to Veritaserum
for the tip.

That student one is tricky...I mean, we have 7 levels, four houses, and let's say we've been introduced to what...6 boys and 6 girls, per house per level? So, 12 times four times seven...gives us 336. Hmm, could be about right. That makes classrooms about 24 students (since Houses takes classes together, aka Slytherin and Gryffindor taking Potions together), it would fit the "hundreds" statement she's made, and it looks like 336 could fit into the common room. What I want to know is..is there a cap? Like, can the school only admit so many new students each year? Curious!

Congratulations to the sites. I have been on hplexicon for a while and have just discovered this site through JKR's website. Both are vital information sources for me as a fanfic writer. Having some of the little questions answered would make it easier to have detail in fics that we otherwise have to make up *scowls*. Its good that JKR does join in with all the fan sites and encourages us - I wish other authors would do the same.

JK is one of the most fan-friendly authors I know of. Even though she's known all over the world and is unbelievably busy, she always has time for little old us ^_^
I love it that she provides little titbits of information through her site and interviews, and it's great that she occasionally goes on the fansites anonymous! We love you Jo!!!

I've though of these questions before, and I keep wondering them. Exactly how many fellow Gryffindors are there? Why arent they mentioned? I think they will be new characters that havent been mentioned yet in the books, but then again, I CANT WAIT FOR THE BOOKS!!

That letter's a really good idea - she's already answered a load of the questions on her website, so it'll probably just be a matter of time until she gets round to answering the rest of them. Poor JK Rowling - does anyone else think she should take a holiday?

I think it's great the fansites are doing this, and I think it is even greater that JK is taking the time and effort to answer some of them.
There are a few unanswered ones, but I am sure we will find out the answers in the upcoming book. Which comes out in 15 days by the way!

It's so cool to read what she has to say about the books and movies. I think it's one of my favorite things to discover when online talkign about Harry Potter. She really seems to get her audience and I also think the next movie is going to make a whole lot more fans.
