Alfonso Cuarón, director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was quoted at the recent DVD launch party as saying that he would love to come back to director another Harry Potter.
From The Leaky Cauldron
:
Later on if I could I would love to come back and work on another Harry Potter film. It's a gift, it's a gift. It was one of the best years of my life, doing this film.
A reporter then asked him about his experience working with children:
I don't think they would appreciate you calling them children! They are teenagers, they are young adults, maybe. It's fantastic. They're amazing. It's an amazing group of actors. At this point they are such experienced actors, they are ... interacting with some of the best actors in life.
And on another note Variety is reporting
that Cuarón has signed a three-year, first-look production deal with Warner Brothers.
Jeff Robinov from Warner Bros. had this to say:
We had a wonderful experience with Alfonso on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and have been long-time admirers of his work. His deal will give us the opportunity to collaborate with Alfonso on movies that make the most of his artistry and vision and continue to offer him the mainstream worldwide audiences that our studio provides so successfully.
Does that mean we can hope to see Alfonso directing another Potter movie in the near future?

I sure hope that he doesn't come back. While I liked the look of this film his clear cutting approach to all other aspects of the story beyond the "main" story-line as heavy handed and unnecessary. I would hope that future directors have the ability to include more into future movies. Potter fans deserve to see more on JKRs work brought to the screen.

I don't think it would be good to bring back Alfonso. They should at least give others directors a chance to put their spin on the movies. I personally didn't like HIm. If anybody should get another chance, it should be Columbus. He started it, why not let him end it?

I think it'd be great if he came back to direct another HP movie, but I'm not sure that is what Warner Bros. meant. I think they just meant that the deal to get him to do Askaban was a 3 movie deal. He does Azkaban, and he can do two more movies...maybe another HP, maybe not.
As for his abilities...I'd like to see GOF before I make a decision. I say this because the first two movies were much more kiddish, and the third was a lot darker. I liked POA, but it was soooo different then the first two that I want to see what another director's take on HP will be before I say that I think he has done the best job.

I think it would be cool to see him direct OOTP. I know that we may have already heard who the director for it is, but I think that Cuaron's view would really bring out the darkness of the book. OOTP is definitely the darkest and I would hope that whoever directs it would be able to depict it well.

I think Cuaron's adaptation of POA was wonderful. You are never going to be able to put everything from the book into the movies because it wouldn't play well on film. But I think the flavor of the book and the main story of the book were maintained.
Think about this: If you were able to draw a picture of any of the scenes or settings or characters from the book your drawings would be totally different from someone sitting next to you even if you both have read all the books and talked about them together. Each Movie is a compilation of several peoples imaginations. Cuaron put a very personal stamp on the film which might differ from how you see the book. It doesn't make it any less valid. Just different from what you see.
I would love to have him come back, he is an exceptional filmmaker!

OH MY GOD! Please no! when I saw PoA I was disappointed I couldn't bear to see another disappointing movie thanks to Cuaron! He made a good movie if you haven't read the books but...Also, he skipped so many parts in his pathetic atempt to only keep the important things that he skipped a whole sub-plot! NO i want Chris Columbus back!!!!
HE LIVES ON!!!

I think he did the best he could with POA, I didn't like it because it didn't fallow the book enough, but this would be the script writers fault more than the director, so I can't blame Alfanso. I wouldn't mind either way I guess.

Well, I, for one, really hope Alfonso Cuaron does decide to come back for Order of the Phoenix. I think he would be perfect for the dark plot of OOTP.
And he made POA very awesome. It turned very good.
I'm definitely buying the DVD tomorrow! ;)

This is the best HP related news I've heard in a long while! For me, POA is how every HP film should have been. Sure Chris Columbus created the visual world but in my opinion it was he that butchered the essence of the books. A drab, almost page by page telling of the stories does not make a good film. Alfonso captured the world perfectly and, apart from using the most delightful cinematography I've probably ever seen, created a clear and decent plot line for all to follow.
Alfonso for Half-Blood Prince!!

Perhaps they are discussing OotP with him? Or maybe the clues Jo mentioned he unknowingly threw into PoA play along with the HBP film? Lots of possibilities. I would be happy with his directing another HP film.
I'm still a little nervous about how GoF will come out in the end. This is by far the more darker of the books up to this point in the series. There are chapters that could really be horrifying. However, you can shoot the best scenes in the world but if you don't edit them together properly or have a great script to start with well then the movie won't be great. I just cross my fingers the spirit of GoF remained intact and the major plots make it through the cutting process.

I actually thought the third film was the best at capturing the mood and atmosphere of the book. PoA was dark and gloomy it was just the way it should of been. Cauron was the best director for that movie and I don't think he would do as great as a job with any other Potter films.

Prisoner of Azkaban was a hard book to turn into a movie(well harder than the first, two.) Anyone who didn't like the third movie, probably won't like the film version of Order of the Phoenix. Just think of what they'll have to cut out of that.
In my opinion, the fourth book should be easier to translate to film. Probably more people will like it. Basicly, you have 5 major hunks: the quidditch world cup, the first task, the second task, the yule ball, and the third task.

At First I didn't like the Movie but the more I watched it I thought it was way better than what Columbus did. I mean I enjoyed Columbus a lot but I don't remember him ever doing any dark movies.. and OOTP is going to be a dark movie. And Curon would do an excellent job I think.

I agree with Phoenix Feather - the movies are adaptations of the books; someone else's vision of the story. I loved Cuaron's vision for PoA. It would be impossible for anyone to create a version that would satisfy everyone. I really liked how Cuaron didn't try to do that. (Still, I think WB will agree that the movie was well-received.) I have long thought it would be awesome for Cuaron to return for OotP, which I think has a similar (dark) tone to PoA, but from the sound of it, that's probably not in the works. Since HBP and #7 will probably be even more dark, he would probably be great for either. I'd love to see him take another one on.
