A web site purporting to offer electronic versions of all five Harry Potter novels by JK Rowling, including the unreleased sixth book, has sprung up and is advertising online to fans through search engines and ad-supported sites like HPANA. We have received numerous e-mails about this issue in the past several days.
DO NOT place any orders with a site claiming to sell such rubbish. It should be noted that there are no authorized electronic text versions of the Potter books, period. The sixth, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is to be released July 16.
The Leaky Cauldron reported
yesterday that after submitting an order on the site -- which will remain unnamed -- a message was returned stating that credit card processing was unsuccessful (after card numbers were already collected and presumably stored).
HPANA has contacted the site's web host to inform them of the illegal nature of their client's site. Rowling and/or her representatives have no doubt already been alerted to the situation. It's highly likely we'll hear something official very soon, in the form of a message from Jo on her web site
, or through one of her representatives.
UPDATE: According to BBC News
the web site in question has been closed down.

I just recently wrote a paper on scamming, and its despicable to see people using the innocence of others so that they can make a profit on something. Hopefully these people will be caught and prosecuted for their actions.

If people get fooled by this, then they are pretty stupid. When something seems too good to be true, then it is too good to be true. But they still don't deserve it. Wouldn't it be something though if it was really true? People probably believe it cause they're hopelessly hoping.

That's terrible. I hope the people responsible are caught, too often crimes on the web go unpunished. Hopefully they did not trick too many people, we are getting wiser everyday as more and more inventive criminals are discovered. Personally I 've received a number of fake emails from people pretending to be paypal, I did not fall for it fortunately. Sometimes it helps to have a computer geek firnd look at the IP address.

I can't believe somebody would have the nerve to do that. They must think they're really clever, tricking people into giving them their credit card numbers. Ugh, that's just horrible. I hope they get caught, those sneak thieves. I feel really bad for the people who believed them. They got scammed. It's just a shame that some foul people do that.

This is really bad. Why do people keep on trying to fool and take advantage of others. This is a really sorry state of affairs. I hope those who are doing this are soon caught, though the worse part is that some people would already have placed orders.

I can't believe anyone would try to do this or, worse yet, that anyone would believe them. I'm glad that the website has been shut down, but that doesn't make what they did excusable.
I hope these creeps go to jail before they try to hoodwink fans with the seventh book as well. A TRUE Harry Potter fan would never try to buy or sell anything on that website!
Oh well ... it's only a six-month wait (for the REAL book) after all ...
