Harry Potter author JK Rowling has updated her official web site with comments relating to the Harry Potter e-book scam that happened recently. She has also squashed a rumor
about her home in Edinburgh as well as updating her Extra Stuff
page with an item about owls.
Rowling on the e-book scam
:
As many of you will know from reputable Harry Potter fan sites who reported this story, a site called www.harrybooks.info (now closed) has been offering what it alleged to be an e-book version of 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' - my thanks go to the Leaky Cauldron, in particular, for promptly warning fans what was going on.
You should NEVER trust any Harry Potter e-books offered for download from the internet or on P2P/file-trading networks. Setting aside the fact that these books are illegal (there are no authorised HP e-books to date), they may infect your computer with viruses, leave you vulnerable to the dangers of hacking and/or credit card fraud and may also contain content that has nothing to do with Harry Potter, to say the least.
I would bet the original manuscript of HPB itself that this will not be the last attempt to con HP fans before the publication of book six on 16th July. Please, please protect yourselves, your computers and your credit cards and do not fall for these scams. The only genuine copies of Harry Potter remain the authorised traditional book or audio tapes/cassettes/CDs distributed through my publishers. Similarly, the only sources of release news you should trust are this website or official spokespeople such as representatives of my publishers or agent (details in 'Links section). CONSTANT VIGILANCE!
UPDATE: Rowling has also added
a new Wizard of the Month: Artemisia Lufkin (1754 – 1825) First witch to become Minister for Magic.

JKR would never put her books online before they are on paper. It would destroy the joy of waiting for a copy at midnight on the release day! I'm never going to download 'Harry Potter e-books'. I don't want to be the victim of online fraud.

I cant wait for the book to come out but we should all know by now that any one saying they have the book already is lying so don't even bother looking at the places that say they have them. Sorry if this sounds harsh but its true.

As to Wizard of the Month:
Artemisia - reminds me to Artemis
Lufkin - reminds me to Lupin, and also Lutfi (a guy i know long time ago)

I'm so glad that JKR speaks out on her web site about such things. I just wish people would understand that hers is the final word on this kind of nonsense. Ah, but con artists know how desperate some people can be. You just know that someone is trying to purchase the manuscript in order to sell portions of it to newspapers and such.

I'm glad that the site was closed. I hope criminal charges are brought against them. It is really sad how there are some people who would do anything to con others of their money, On the flip side It is really great how JKR stays connected with her fans, and updates us on new events, and gives reminders of not to trust any information that does not come from her website or from her publishers. I am so happy for her new little girl. She must be so happy. Congrats JKR on your baby girl!!

Erm, you'd be a pretty stupid person to fall for it. However, there are kids looking for extras and goodies who don't have the savvy to see through this. Therefore, I say:
SCUM!!! HATEFUL SCUMMY SCUMBAGS!!!
All who cheat us must be punished. I'm all for taking their hands, as used to be done to thieves centuries ago. Well, maybe not really, but SOMETHING bad should happen. Perhaps a very large and gastrointestinally-troubled bird should get its morning relief on their heads? Daily, for at least a week running? Oh, and criminal charges, as applicable.

I think that its horrible how people are always taking advantage of others. They can take something as harmless as a book, and try to make a profit off of it by taking advantage of innocent people who sometimes don't know better. It's pathetic.

We just have to be patient. These people who are conning others are just looking to do harm to others for a quick buck. Never believe anything unless it comes from JKR herself or her publishers.

Shouldn't folks really realize that only JK and her publishers have any sort of copy? And they're assuredly being payed way more than would ever be offered to bribe them into letting someone get their hands on a copy for people to be viewing online. (Crazies, you can't fool us intelligent HP fans!)
