Trimmed down version of 'Goblet of Fire' fine with Rowling Popular (19454)

David Heyman, producer of the Harry Potter movies, recently told SCI FI Wireopens in new window that they had to trim the 700-plus-page book by following a simple principle: "Anything that doesn't really relate to Harry and Harry's journey is less relevant."

One example: The film will not deal with the subplot involving Winky and Dobby, two house elves, and the issue of SPEW.

According to Heyman:

It's Hermione's issue. Not to say Hermione's [not important]. Hermione's a vitally important character. But you have to make some choices. ... One piece of information ... we've put into another character, which feels perfectly organic [and] works. ... The story works perfectly without [the elf story]. And we consulted with Jo [Potter author J.K. Rowling] about it, and she was fine [with it].

Other things that we can expect to see in the movie:

  • Inside the Weasley's surprisingly spacious tent at the Quidditch World Cup
  • A massive cemetery (where the film's climax takes place)
  • A trophy room filled with silvered plaques and cups of various sizes
  • The Ministry Box at the Quidditch World Cup stadium
  • A faux marble Trial Chamber, which rises several stories high

I think that Spew should definitley be in the movie. Along with Winky and Dobby. They play huge roles in the story, winky with harrys wand, and Dobby helping Harry with the second task. I just hope that they dont make the movie completley different from the book. But then again if jkr has said it was ok, then it is probably going to be fine.

I understand that, some had to go.

It will be interesting to see how they explain how Harry gets the gillyweed, though.

What!! No S.P.E.W?? Ahh i was really looking forward to that, oh well, if it isn't in GOF it must'nt have much importance for future books unless they introduce it in OoTP?? Im glad that their not cutting the Quiddich world cup, im really looking forward to watching that!!

Well, we all expected that their were going to be a lot cut out from the text. I liked the SPEW story, but I don't think that it was the main plot of the text.

Not a very bad news. Hope they dont cut out all the scenes in the movie. I'm glad JKR is not doing this to a literral point. But i think it will be the best movie in the series.

it's understandable that things have to be cut from a 700 page book to make a 2 and a half hour movie - but my question is - WHY make a two and a half hour movie?!?! I think i speak for 90% of the fans out here when i say that we'd more than happily sit through a longer film than that - we did for Lord of the Rings!
Obviously it's too late to do anything about it now - but maybe the producers should have considered that people are willing to sit through three hours of film.... Ah Well

Don't hate me. I was secretly hoping SPEW would be cut. I love how Hermione acts in 4 and all, but seeing it on screen would be so overkill and tedious. And the info coming from another character, i believe relates to something the house-elves tell us (gillyweed, perhaps?), not something having to do with Hermy.

Are the house-elves going to appear at all? I can easily see winky being cut... at QWC the MOM or Mr. Weasly would just have to ask why crouch wasnt in his seat. Hmmm... would save some CG money...

SPEW wasn't a major sacrifice obviously. it's just extra stuff. they probably wouldn't even have it in a three hr movie. what's the trial chamber and the trophy room have to do with anything?

Even though SPEW isnt a major part in the whole tory line, I too am worried about what they are going to do about the whole winky-crouch-voldie follower thing! Im also confused about what Jencameby said when they said that the elf liberation wasnt put in any of the other films! How could it have been when it only came into effect in GoF?

As it has been said with the cut of the SPEW storyline - there is more room for more important things ie: Dan, Tom and Rupert! heh heh

I really dont mind, actually that was probably my least favourite part of the book. I was glad when I find out, and Jo's fine with that so, I don't think its going to adjust the movie to much.

It's for the Pensive scene. When Harry travels in it to see Crouch Jr. and Bagman and them all be put to trial. At least I think. It could be in the fifth book, but more than likely its in GOF.

Well anyways

Harry's Honey-Hermione's plight to free the house elves from there slavery actually started in the CoS with the introduction of Dobby' this is when Hermione realized their was a problem she was concerned about, and they didn't put that in the film.

Also I want to see how they do the triwizard tournament, oh and you know how Harry is very moody and scary in a way in the 5th book I want to see if they act that out in the film. I am a bit annoyed about them cutting bits of but if J.K likes it, its got to be good!!
