Trimmed down version of 'Goblet of Fire' fine with Rowling Popular (19454)

David Heyman, producer of the Harry Potter movies, recently told SCI FI Wireopens in new window that they had to trim the 700-plus-page book by following a simple principle: "Anything that doesn't really relate to Harry and Harry's journey is less relevant."

One example: The film will not deal with the subplot involving Winky and Dobby, two house elves, and the issue of SPEW.

According to Heyman:

It's Hermione's issue. Not to say Hermione's [not important]. Hermione's a vitally important character. But you have to make some choices. ... One piece of information ... we've put into another character, which feels perfectly organic [and] works. ... The story works perfectly without [the elf story]. And we consulted with Jo [Potter author J.K. Rowling] about it, and she was fine [with it].

Other things that we can expect to see in the movie:

  • Inside the Weasley's surprisingly spacious tent at the Quidditch World Cup
  • A massive cemetery (where the film's climax takes place)
  • A trophy room filled with silvered plaques and cups of various sizes
  • The Ministry Box at the Quidditch World Cup stadium
  • A faux marble Trial Chamber, which rises several stories high

I'm ok with it as long as it doesn't affect the overall plot. I can't wait for November to come along.

I think it still would have been cool if the SPEW thing was still in there. At least the other things will be in there, I can't wait to see the tent, that will be awesome.

if really bumbs me out that they can't just make the mivies 5 hours adn keep everything in!!! but i understand they are on a set time limit and yes i really do want to see the movie sometime this year. so i guess i will live. and the guy who directed the film in #3 movie, they should keep his artistic style, I LOVED IT!!! especially when the dementer came adn the pink flowers died.... any way back to the topic on hand, i think the #4 movie, scince it has to cut out parts, that it should at least be very well, artistically made :) and really have the feeling put into it that the books have!!!! and that's all. -"Arabella"

I would have liked to have seen some of the smaller parts put into the movie because it feels more comparable to the books.

I hope the argument between Ron and Harry still takes place in the movie. What a dramatic scene that would be!

I understand that they can't put everything into the movie and I agree that the SPEW storyline relates more to Hermione (but Harry learns alot too, especially as it comes back with kreacher in OotP), but I hope they won't cut as much as they did in PoA. Why can't they go ahead and film most of it and save it for a special edition dvd set that they release at the end? I'll buy that set too! thought PoA was far too short--even my husband who hasn't read the books felt there was a lot missing. He had to ask me to fill in the blanks. PLEASE hear our plea--we want more of the story in the movie!!!

I have to say, I'm releaved. I actually hated the elf story. It was the most annoying thing ever. Sure it explained more about Hermoine's character, but it was just.........pointless.

Yeah, I don't really like the elf part of the story either. But I do like a lot of the other little parts. That's a lot of what I look forward to in the movies, but every time I read the elf part, I almost want to skip it.

Honestly, it could have been left out, and the story would have probably been better. She could have made another reason to go down to the kitchens.......

It's all right they aren't having it in the movie, but it would have been really nice if they did. Can you imagine Hermione yealling at Ron, "It's S.P.E.W.! Not spew!" =]

I'm slightly disappointed, i would of preferred to most of the content if not all as it would portray the books more accurately and do the books justice.

Well, that does not matter really. However I'm again surprised how these film making staff does not use their fantasy! A sentence or two just referring to SPEW embedded into a conversation between the trio would add to the atmosphere and such referations would mean a lot to those who watch the movie and read the books before. (That is most of us.) Why don't they realize that the targeted audience are those who understand suc tings and would be happy to see and hear sg in the film that has importance in the books.
This news also mean sg else. It might mean that we don't really have to think about how SPEW adds to the storyline and what mysteries, hints and clues might've been hidden in it.

I expected this. At least they are being smart about what they cut, and they are going to JKR for approval which is awesome! It's impossible to fit a book into a movie, even when they made the extended 4 hour versions of LOTR they still didn't get everything in. I will miss the humor that SPEW brought the the story though.
