Trimmed down version of 'Goblet of Fire' fine with Rowling Popular (19454)

David Heyman, producer of the Harry Potter movies, recently told SCI FI Wireopens in new window that they had to trim the 700-plus-page book by following a simple principle: "Anything that doesn't really relate to Harry and Harry's journey is less relevant."

One example: The film will not deal with the subplot involving Winky and Dobby, two house elves, and the issue of SPEW.

According to Heyman:

It's Hermione's issue. Not to say Hermione's [not important]. Hermione's a vitally important character. But you have to make some choices. ... One piece of information ... we've put into another character, which feels perfectly organic [and] works. ... The story works perfectly without [the elf story]. And we consulted with Jo [Potter author J.K. Rowling] about it, and she was fine [with it].

Other things that we can expect to see in the movie:

  • Inside the Weasley's surprisingly spacious tent at the Quidditch World Cup
  • A massive cemetery (where the film's climax takes place)
  • A trophy room filled with silvered plaques and cups of various sizes
  • The Ministry Box at the Quidditch World Cup stadium
  • A faux marble Trial Chamber, which rises several stories high

I think we are all going to have to wait and see the movie. It is really easy to complain about what has been cut. But the movie has to meet the time constraints. And it is all about Harry. If Jo is happy with what has been cut then we all need to sit back and wait.

If it's ok with Jk then I'm a bit reassured that the movie will turn out ok. Still a bit worried though, it's my favourite book and I hope the movie will become my favourite as well.

It's okay. If Jo is okay with it then it's fine. They have to cut some scenes , you know ,because they can't make the movie very long. But so what, even if they are cutting it some scenes, GOF still is going to rock and I'm sure it will be the best movie of the year!!

Extendable Ears says:

David Heyman is right of course -- not everything can be fit in in a 2.5 hour film. I can hear the complaints from fans already. The trimmed down plot that was Harry-focused seemed to be a major issue of dislike for many fans. I personally think it's the best way to approach the adaptation of a story with so many layers and details.

And if Jo is in fact fine with a trimmed version of her story as the headline suggests, I think we ought to be happy with it as well. It's her baby after all and she has the ultimate judgement.

Thats kinda strange!! It's not relevant in the harry story, however i still think it's a minor vital part of the book.I mean SPEW is somthing that bugs Harry and Ron. The Dobby thing is kinda dum too, many people liked the house elf in the second movie very good, i hope they only mean that it's winkys drinking problem their reffering too, because Dobby gives Harry the gillyweed he just have too be in, unless they have put somone else in too that job. But i understand that they cant fit evrything tough...
I'm really looking forward too se the cemetary thging, i hope they made it look foggy and stuff,(creepy)
o amn i'm looking forward to november(and july 16.!!)

SPEW is not that important anyway. Of course, it does somewhat relate to OoTP, but that can be addressed in the next film. Glad that they have priorities in order.

ok I can accept them not putting the house elves in but to not have Percy Weasley in this movie I think is ignoring a huge proportion of the plot. But I suppose it can't be helped really, we all knew they would be cutting alot from the remaining books, they'll probably pare OoTP down to an hour and a half at this rate!

Well it's kind of sad that they nixed SPEW and Dobby and Winky from the movie, but at least some of my favorite scenes will be included. As long as they don't screw up the Tournament and the Cemetary sequences, I'll be happy. :D

If it has to happen it has to happen. At least the books can still capture the imagination of its readers. I just hope not to much was cut it would be a shame to see GoF slashed behind recongision.

Crouch's thing with his son can be included without involving the elves much.

I just really hope they have a lot of the twin's joke stuff in there. Just to throw us off here in there in the middle of all the seriousness.

I guess it is okay that the SPEW sequence was cut out of the movie. It doesn't really pertain to Harry's journal like the article said. At least Mrs. Rowling was okay with the decision. I can't wait for the movie.

Oliver Wood is Fit says:

Well that's not eactly news, they were never going to fit 700pages without it being 7 hours long. Although I like it as a good sub plot it seems fair enough that the spew bit had to go, although I did always like the scene when they went down to the kitchens to get food!

I don't know... the SPEW thing was kinda annoying in the book. But it was a big part of hermione. I guess it doesn't have a lot to do with Harry. But, what about dobby? Are they gonna cut him??? Dobby is needed by Harry. So unless they completely change the way he finds out certain thing, then at least Dobby will be in it. I kinda like that little guy. I cant wait for this movie!!!

That seems reasonable. I think they've done a good job to add in the important points in the movie. The book is like 700 pgs long they have to cut it somehow.

Aw... no SPEW :( I thought that that was going to be pretty important, and also with the Winky and Dobby business. But I guess if its not that important to the central plot, i am ok with it. As long as they don't cut anything too importnat out, Im ok with it. I understand. In 2 1/2 hours, you cant take in every single detail of a 700-pg book.
