Trimmed down version of 'Goblet of Fire' fine with Rowling Popular (19454)

David Heyman, producer of the Harry Potter movies, recently told SCI FI Wireopens in new window that they had to trim the 700-plus-page book by following a simple principle: "Anything that doesn't really relate to Harry and Harry's journey is less relevant."

One example: The film will not deal with the subplot involving Winky and Dobby, two house elves, and the issue of SPEW.

According to Heyman:

It's Hermione's issue. Not to say Hermione's [not important]. Hermione's a vitally important character. But you have to make some choices. ... One piece of information ... we've put into another character, which feels perfectly organic [and] works. ... The story works perfectly without [the elf story]. And we consulted with Jo [Potter author J.K. Rowling] about it, and she was fine [with it].

Other things that we can expect to see in the movie:

  • Inside the Weasley's surprisingly spacious tent at the Quidditch World Cup
  • A massive cemetery (where the film's climax takes place)
  • A trophy room filled with silvered plaques and cups of various sizes
  • The Ministry Box at the Quidditch World Cup stadium
  • A faux marble Trial Chamber, which rises several stories high

I'm still sick over Molly not being in the movie. But I have to say that I'm glad to see SPEW go. It annoyed me.

I know that it was a really long and complex book and that it had to be cut somewhere, so I am not that surprised. But I really enjoyed the SPEW storyline in the book and I thought that it would have been really cute and funny in the movie. I am sure that if J.K. approved then the movie will turn out great. I can't wait to see.

Here it is, you guys, specifically PhantasmKiss and Megz14...I don't think so much it's that we're all attaching significance to the wrong things. I think that HP is a series where everything ties together, so any piece of information given to us is important. The fact that there are unregistered animagi or that Harry's patronus is also stag us not only interesting but important to the series. I think it adds depth to the situations that take place within each story. I think that one of the biggest mistakes they made was switching directors. I have been saying this since I first saw POA in the theater. Chris Columbus was the best director because, as he said in an interview, he didn't want to make a movie that was going to totally butcher the story. While most directors are concerned with making a really great movie and make really major cuts as a result, Chris Columbus was more concerned with accuracy, so that casual fans could enjoy the film, but fans who know the world of Harry Potter would not be disappointed. His goal was to bring to life what we imagined in our heads as we read the books...and I think he did an amazing job.

I agree with AR_GRYFFINDOR, Cris COlumbus did do a magnificant job, he made the first two movies, exactly, well almost to the book, they were what you imagined it to be. These new directors don't have the Harry Potter spirit, they need it though, cause i would rather sit through a 4 hour movie than a 2 hour one that makes no sense.

Well, they should split it into two movies. I am sure they would make as much money or more, because The Harry Potter movies are a "sure thing," especially in the worldwide market.

So, if they have just one movie, of course they have to do drastic cutting of the book.

What I hate, is considering the cutting of the books to make these films, why do they add really stupid scenes that waste time? In The Prisoner of Azkaban, the scene with the Fat Lady in the mirror singing and smashing her glass was not a bit funny or clever.

It's a bit too bad, because even though SPEW is not a 'Harry's issue', it is still going to be mentioned in book(movie) 5. If people are just watching no5 without reading the book, how would they know about it. Look back at the 'Marauders' Map' case.
As long as it does not change the movie as a whole and it still can be viewed on its own, I'm fine with it.

It is true that it had to be cut down and it sounds as though they have made some good choices about what to cut. I am worried that they may have repeated the mistake of the last movie in cutting out parts of the book to make way for boring cliches and sentimentalism (eg Lupin's transformation with the suggestion that he could fight it and almost anything Dumbledore said)

I think they have taken considerable licence. The graveyard is supposed to be small and I don't remeber any scene involving the Trophy room in Goblet of Fire. I just hope they haven't cut the prefects' bathroom scene. It may not be crucial to the plot but it could have been fun.

That's what I'm saying. SPEW might have been funny (sometimes it was just down-right annoying) but I agree that it is Hermione's issue and not Harry's and it's not quite crucial to the development of the story. But it's true, how are they going to fix the problem with Winky and Crouch and Dobby helping Harry? The problem isn't them cutting SPEW, it's cutting the house elves in general. They're too important to cut.

I don't really mind if they have to cut it but I can see why people are angry about it... But there will be much more time for them to show better scenes like all of the tasks, the dreams, etc.
