Trimmed down version of 'Goblet of Fire' fine with Rowling Popular (19454)

David Heyman, producer of the Harry Potter movies, recently told SCI FI Wireopens in new window that they had to trim the 700-plus-page book by following a simple principle: "Anything that doesn't really relate to Harry and Harry's journey is less relevant."

One example: The film will not deal with the subplot involving Winky and Dobby, two house elves, and the issue of SPEW.

According to Heyman:

It's Hermione's issue. Not to say Hermione's [not important]. Hermione's a vitally important character. But you have to make some choices. ... One piece of information ... we've put into another character, which feels perfectly organic [and] works. ... The story works perfectly without [the elf story]. And we consulted with Jo [Potter author J.K. Rowling] about it, and she was fine [with it].

Other things that we can expect to see in the movie:

  • Inside the Weasley's surprisingly spacious tent at the Quidditch World Cup
  • A massive cemetery (where the film's climax takes place)
  • A trophy room filled with silvered plaques and cups of various sizes
  • The Ministry Box at the Quidditch World Cup stadium
  • A faux marble Trial Chamber, which rises several stories high

I think the direction they are going with this movie is much better then the other ones. It seems like they are takin out stuff from the book rather then changing the book, as what happened in PoA. I mean, i wish i could see the whole book out on a big screen. Oh well.

mwa~!

I'm perfectly ok with this. As long as JO is happy with how this is all going to happen, I am too. I want this book to be justice, and If that means Winky must be cut I'm fine with it.

S.P.E.W, although wasn't a vital part of GoF, was an interesting little side-story line, that made many HP fans giggle before gasping (when Cedric died). I am disappointed that its not going to be in the movie, but I know they've kept the fight between Ron and Harry in, which is good to know! I wonder if the pensieve moment will still be there?

Oh, I can hear the hew and cry already! People just don't understand that films are always distilled versions of the novel. I think of the HP films as a way to condense the elaborate plot into its basic elements.

Hmmm...its a shame that they have to cut things but I suppose its vital otherwise the film will gone on for ages and ages. As long as they don't miss out anything important so the film is ruined or hard to follow, because they've missed out somethuing really important, then I'll will be happy.

It is a good choice to take out that part of the film because it is less relevant( even if thet means less hermione ) but the film will not be so large and it is almost imposible to include all the details odf the book without doing a Very Large film.

Well, at least the pensieve scene seems to be there still. I'm just frustrated, I'm afraid if the amount that they have cut from GOF will be any indication of what they are going to cut out of OotP to get it to fit. Ugh!

Personally i didn't like the SPEW theme at the book, it was boring, so i'm happy they cut it out of the film. What i regret is that we're not gonna be able to see Dudley and his looooongue tongue hahahahahahaha. Cool thing they left the Pensieve scene, that would've criminal to cut.

see you in Novemeber!!!!!

i wish they could stay true to most of the book. its cute things like S.P.E.W. that develop the friendships and other ships between certain characters **wink wink**

I easily sit through at least two of the LOTR extended editions back to back, and I know other fans like me would love a 5 hours HP movie.

Warner Bros. hasn't fudged up too bad so far, I'm still a major fan of the movies, so we'll just wait and see what happens with GoF.

Besides, if its alright with Jo, its got to be alright with us!

I dont mind if they take out SPEW as long as they explain whats going on... that Winky was supposed to be watching Crouch, that Dobby works at Hogwarts. I really hope that this one will do a better job of telling the story than PoA did. Hopefully we will all be satisfied when we leave the theater.

What???? -NO WINKY &Dobby AND NO S.P.E.W.????!?!?! -but that WAS important and it WASN'T just "Hermione's issue", it was a way to introduce a major social problem of the WIZARDING WORLD!!!!!!!! -how could Heyman not see this?!?!?!?! I'm starting to question his capacity of understanding this story!!!!! -has he got tired?????

I'm glad he didn't cut out the Weasley's tent (at least!!), but was the Trophy Room really necessary in this movie??! (if we're talking about saving time!!) ...and the Ministry Box at the Quidditch stadium couldn't have been cut anyway!(duh!!) ....As for the Trial Chamber (from the Pensieve-scene) and THE CEMETERY, well, OF COURSE he HAD to include them, those are ESSENTIAL, KEY-SCENES!!!!! --WHAT, ARE WE SUPPOSED TO THANK HIM NOW FOR NOT COMPLETELY RUINIG THE STORY?????

Well, if JKR is fine with it, then I guess I sholud try to be too... -but it's gonna be hard!!!...
