'Harry Potter' inspires inventions Popular (10410)

It would seem that the folks over at Microsoft have been reading the Harry Potter books to get ideas. At the Microsoft Techfest, an annual science fair, a digital wall clockopens in new window with hands for each member of the family instead of numbers made its debut. The hands of the clock point to home, school, work and mobile.

The clock won't be for sale anytime soon and was designed to expose employees to projects in development.

On another note, researchers and engineers from the University of Pennsylvania have developed a "plamonic coveropens in new window" which is similar to an invisibility cloak also from the Harry Potter series. This version of the cloak works by preventing objects from reflecting and scattering light.

The development, which works by preventing objects from reflecting and scattering light, could have widespread use in the military as it would be more effective than current stealth technology.

I guess reading and watching Philosopher's Stone and Chambers of Secrets helps everyone.

Now how are they going to do the clock? Some kind of microchip in the skin that the clock can read?

I like the clock, but I find the cloak much more interesting. How can they do that? You know, I find that kind of funny. I was just joking with my friend the other day about how JKR "has won every award there is, except maybe a Contribution to Science Award"... Can you imagine what it would be like if there really were invisbility cloaks one day?

Dude, that's awesome. I wish I could have one of those clock things- not that my family is all that big or anything, but you know, it certainly looks cool:D

And of course Harry Potter is beneficial to everyone-- it's like the best thing in the world! The people who don't see that are missing out!

Hehe; I want a clock like that! I'm not sure how accurate it would be for telling time, though. The spoons seem rather large.

Who said Microsoft invents new things. It looks like they "borrow" ideas from someone else. Microsoft bashers this is your day. :)

Why doesn't JKR sue Microsoft for copyright infringement. She should. :)

Dude...that clock idea is great! How would it work tho? You would need some sort of GPS tracking device in it as well as tracking on the person as well.
As for the invisibility cloak...all I can say is WOW...what will we think of next?
